t’s hard to believe the Rose is heading into its sixth season. Each year brings a new challenge to present the right variety of programming to suit our diverse audiences. As I began programming, I looked at your feedback, your requests and at box office returns. I asked myself, how can I make the Rose more accessible to a broader portion of this community, maintain our mandate to present culturally-diverse work and challenge our patrons to take artistic risks? The answer is, with

an eclectic blend of commercial and well-known acts sprinkled with lesser known, yet dynamic, performances and a lot more family-friendly shows, guaranteeing a broad range of choice for everyone. I hope to introduce to you shows you might not have thought to attend, but whose international reputation makes them worthy of being presented on our stages.

This year it’s “surprise and be surprised”, with some performers returning, others gracing our stage for the

first time, some big names, and others, the bright stars of tomorrow ready to be discovered by you. My credo continues to be to dare to challenge our audiences, not compromise on creativity and quality and, just maybe, to not always fit the mold.

Welcome back to our theatre!

I

Welcome to the 2011-2012 Rose Theatre Presents Professional Entertainment Series. Now in our sixth season, we are proud to bring you the very best in

culture and entertainment from around the globe. Our dynamic city deserves local access to world class arts. Quickly approaching a population of half a million residents, Brampton has become a bright light on the national stage, attracting artists of the highest talent and creative calibre. Please join me this year in celebrating our vibrant theatre season. It’s all here and it’s all for you.

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS...

ALL STARTED WITH THE RAT PACK!

This spirited show recreates one of the famous

“Summit at the Sands” nights when swingin’, ring-a-

ding group known as “The Rat Pack” was creating

hipster legend with a free-wheeling, no-holds-barred

nightclub act starring Vegas’ four favorite sons: Frank

Sinatra, Sammy davis, Jr., dean Martin and Joey Bishop.

Produced by dick Feeney, THe RAT PACK IS BACK

features uncanny vocal recreations, unbridled

humour, and a hot, live 12-piece orchestra that

sends audiences straight back to the coolest time in

history. Hits include “That’s Amore,” “My Way,” “Mr.

Bojangles,” and many more. See why The las Vegas

Sun writes, “This is as close as anyone has come to capturing the feeling of the real thing,” and the Chicago Tribune raves, “Classic comic material. excellent!”

For the first time in popular music, the greatest albums from the 60s, 70s and 80s are recreated live on stage, note for note – cut for cut.

Since its release in 1980, this album has become a record-shattering rock ‘n’ roll landmark, passed along from generation to generation and guaranteed a spot on the shelves of every music enthusiast not living under a rock (and some that are). The first album with new front man Brian Johnson, Back In Black turned out to be the best selling hard rock album of all time with an estimate 49 million plus albums sold world-wide.

When Ashley MacIsaac burst on the worldwide scene with 1995’s Hi, How are you Today?, he scored the kind of coup instrumental artists often dream of. Going triple platinum in Canada and breaking down radio barriers with the Gaelic single “Sleepy Maggie”, Ashley became an immediate pop icon – rebellious and exuberant, resplendent in kilts, army boots and combat pants.

These days, his playing stronger than ever, Ashley delves back to his Cape Breton roots, bringing to the stage an impressive array of traditional East Coast fiddle tunes, performed with a virtuosity not seen or heard from any other artist.

A madcap, off-the-wall, murder mystery musical comedy hit, The Last Resort pokes fun at everything, including itself.

A restaurant owner on the run from the mob finds refuge at a lodge in rural Saskatchewan, where ten strange characters assemble to meet with murder. With laughs piling up higher as each new guest is introduced, The Last Resort is where you want to be... especially if you have a secret.

Part murder mystery, all uproarious comedy and one dazzling song after another!

Performing on a mind-altering array of traditional percussion instruments large and small, including massive, barrel-like odaiko drums six feet in diameter, the men and women of Yamato promise a heart-pounding spectacle of athleticism, grace, precision,  and exhilarating musical expertise. Yamato combines drums with the timpani, flute, and colorful, authentic Japanese costumes for an evening of highly charged rhythm.

Founded in 1993 in Nara, considered the birthplace of Japanese culture, the master drummers of Yamato are young, modern, and brimming with infectious energy as they take the ancient art of taiko drumming and bring it to the present.

Perhaps best known for his collaboration with “soul mate” Eric Clapton, the early days of Bluesbreakers garnered John Mayall world-wide legendary status. When the band split, John went on to help define an entire era of hard hitting Chicago-style Blues and he discovered a knack for finding new talent. Throughout the 90s, Mayall recorded a string of hit albums to critical and popular acclaim which illustrate his ongoing mastery of the blues and his continuing importance in contemporary music.

As for the man himself at 75, a father of six and grandfather of six, Mayall hopes to keep the blues alive for many more years to come.

For the first time in popular music, the greatest albums from the 60s, 70s and 80s are recreated live on stage, note for note, cut for cut.

In Through The Out Door is the last proper Led Zeppelin album and the band sounds so assured that it’s hard to believe the end was just around the corner. With a few interesting stylistic detours--the almost salsa-like piano that drives “Fool in the Rain,” the country-flavoured hoedown of “Hot Dog”—this is for the most part 1970s rock in the grandest style.

After studying classical piano for seven years, a 13-year-old kaeshammer discovered boogie-woogie. In three years, the teen wunderkind was playing boogie-woogie piano in clubs, concerts, and festivals all over Germany. He attracted attention almost immediately after the family moved to the west coast of Canada, turning heads at performances at blues and jazz festivals during the summer of 1996. Now a consummate entertainer, with a droll but quick-witted onstage banter, Michael continues to surprise audiences and inspire awe with his elaborate arrangements and improvisations.

In 1997, she founded La Pietà, an all-female string ensemble. Since then, the verdict about Angèle Dubeau and la Pietà has been unanimous: their dazzling virtuosity, impeccable precision, energy, and style are equated only by the obvious pleasure they take and communicate when playing.

In A Time For Us you will hear special moments of music from great composers like George Gershwin, John Williams, and Leonard Bernstein, with some of the best scores from 20th century cinema including Schindler’s List, Far & Away, Beauty and the Beast, An American in Paris, The Adventures of Robin Hood and Cinema Paradiso.

For the first time in popular music, the greatest albums from the 60s, 70s and 80s are recreated live on stage, note for note – cut for cut.

The final Doors album to feature vocalist Jim Morrison reaffirmed the quartet’s grasp of blues-rock. The overall sound of the record is relatively stripped down but the musicianship is uniformly excellent. Jim Morrison’s voice, somewhat ragged and weather-worn, adds its fiercely unmistakable resonance. The now classic “L.A. Woman” was a fitting swan song for one of the most unique and important bands of the 60s.

In this hilarious interactive performance, the ISC creates a fully improvised play in Elizabethan style to bring you an evening of off-the-cuff comedy using the language and themes of William Shakespeare. Any hour could be filled with power struggles, star-crossed lovers, sprites, kings, queens, princesses, sword-play, rhyming couplets, asides, insults, persons in disguise and all that we’ve come to expect from the pen of the Great Bard. Nothing is planned-out, rehearsed, or written. Each play is completely improvised, so each play is entirely new!

Featured at the prestigious Just For laughs festival in Montreal, ISC was recently honored by the Chicago Improv Foundation as its “ensemble of the year”.

This extraordinary one-woman show maps the raw, but beautiful interior life of a misfit adolescent. Claudia, age twelve-and-three-quarters, finds herself suffering from the triple afflictions of puberty, unpopularity, and her parents’ divorce. using four astonishingly expressive masks the performer evokes the anguished Claudia, her grandfather, her dad’s new girlfriend, and the school janitor. Both heartbreakingly sad and wrenchingly funny, I, Claudia casts a spell of rare power in the theatre. One of Canada’s most celebrated plays running for nine consecutive years and winning two Dora Awards, two Canadian Comedy Awards, a Sterling Award, an ACTRA award, and a Gemini.
