Founded in 1978 by Jacques R. Saadé, today CMA CGM is the world’s third largest container shipping group and number one in France.
CMA CGM is headquartered in Marseille (France), and operates out of over 655 offices and agencies in more than 160 countries. With regular services on over 170 shipping lines, the Group manages a dense network capable of meeting the expectations of its customers all over the world.
The CMA CGM Group’s primary objective is to meet thegrowing needs of its customers from a sustainabledevelopment perspective.
CMA CGM provides customers with tailor-made solutionsto meet all their transport requirements, on land as wellas at sea.
1977
Compagnie Générale Maritime (CGM) is created through
the merger of "les Messageries Maritimes (MessMar)
and "la Compagnie Générale Transatlantique" (Transat).
1996
Formerly State-owned CGM is privatized
1978
Jacques R. Saadé forms Compagnie Maritime
d’Affrètement (CMA).
1995-1996
CMA becomes the leading French container shipping company.
1998
Acquisition of Australian National Lines (ANL).
1999
CMA and CGM are legally merged.
Creation of CMA CGM “The French Line”:
78 ships/260,000 TEU.
2002
Acquisition of UK-based MacAndrews to develop the European feedering business.
2003
CMA CGM ranks No. 5 worldwide, with 153 ships and 304,000 TEU. 21 vessels are ordered, with capacities of 5,700 to 8,200 TEU
2004
Acquisition of the Compagnie des Iles du Ponant, a luxury cruise line, as well as Tapis Rouge, a premium tour operator.
2006
Acquisition of Delmas.
2007
CMA CGM purchases Taiwanese company Cheng Lie Navigation Ltd., Moroccan company COMANAV and American company US Lines.
2008
Delivery of the first 11,000 TEU vessels ordered by the Group.
2009
CMA CGM awarded Ocean Carrier of the Year » by the world N°1 retailer.
2010
CMA CGM has issued Redeemable bonds, all of which were subscribed to the YILDIRIM Group
2011
Delivery of the Tour CMA CGM, new Head Office.
