1 Polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE)

Polyethylene terephthalate (pet or pete) is one

of the most common types of plastics and is

commonly found in bottle of soda, juice, water,

cough syrup and jars of peanut butter. The

bottoms of these containers are usually

stamped with the chasing arrow symbol and the

number 1, the code for PET.

Page 5: Group 5 power point

Why is Pet so popular?

● Pet plastic is naturally, colorless and highly

transparent.

● Pet plastic is strong, lightweight,

shatterproof, and has excellent barrier to

gas, alcohol, and other solvents.

● Pet plastic is relatively inexpensive to

manufacture and is highly recycling.

Pet plastic in the world.

Pet plastic isn't the most used of the plastics. It

actually ranked number 3. But while it's not the

most use, PET is actually the most recycling

type of plastic in the world.

InformationType of plastics

Properties First application

Reclyced application

HDPE Hard to semi-flexible, waxy surface, opaque. Softens: 135° C SG = 0.96

Crinkly shopping bags, freezer bags, milk bottles, bleach bottles, buckets, rigid agricultural pipe, milk crates

Agricultural pipes, pallets, bins for compost and kerbside collections, extruded sheet, crates, garden edging, household bags, oil containers, pallets

Page 9: Group 5 power point

Unpigmented bottles are translucent, have good barrier properties and stiffness, and are well suited to packaging products with a short shelf life such as milk. HDPE hasgood chemical resistance, it is used for packaging many household and industrial chemicals such as detergents and bleach.

High Density Polyethylene

Page 10: Group 5 power point

Properties:

HDPE is stiff, strength, tough, resistance to chemicals and moisture, permeability to gas, it's easy of processing and easy of forming.

Product applications

People use HDPE for the bottles of milk, water, juice, cosmetic, shampoo, dish and laundry detergent bottles; yogurt andmargarine tubs; cereal box liners; grocery, trash and retail bags.

The polypropylene

Page 13: Group 5 power point

The polypropylene is also known as PP

It is a thermoplastic polymer used in a wide

variety of applications including packaging and

labeling, textiles (e.g., ropes, thermal

underwear and carpets), stationery, plastic

parts and reusable containers of various

types...

Market

-Following the slumping recession period and the slow revival state during the post-crisis years, the global market for polypropylene is seeing considerable demand increases as the key end-use fields expand production volumes. The total polypropylene market is not expected to witness complete and bashing downs in the coming 5 years: the polypropylene price is high and consumers are looking more rigidly for the material substitutes

Page 16: Group 5 power point

Recycling

Polypropylene is recyclable and has the number "5" as its resin identification code:

Page 17: Group 5 power point

Application-As polypropylene is resistant to fatigue, most plastic living hinges, such as those on flp-top bottles, are made from this material. However, it is important to ensure that chain molecules are oriented across the hinge to maximise strength.Very thin sheets of polypropylene are used as a dielectric within certain high-performance pulse and low-loss RF capacitors.

LDPE

Page 19: Group 5 power point

Type of plastic: Low Density PolyethyleneProperties: Soft, flexible, waxy, surface translucent, withstands solvents Softens: 115° C SG = 0.92 APPLICATIONS: Virgin Grades Garbage bags, squeeze bottles, black irrigation tube, silage and mulch films, garbage binsAPPLICATIONS: Recycled grades MAJOR USE / minor use FILMS: BUILDERS, CONCRETE LINING and BAGS Agricultural pipe, nursery & other films

Page 20: Group 5 power point

Low-density polyethylene

Excellent resistance (no attack) to dilute and concentrated acids, alcohols, bases and estersGood resistance (minor attack) to aldehydes, ketones and vegetable oilsLimited resistance (moderate attack suitable for short-term use only) to aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, mineral oils, andoxidizing agentsPoor resistance, and not recommended for use with Halogenated hydrocarbons.LDPE is widely used for manufacturing various containers, dispensing bottles, wash bottles, tubing, plastic bags for computer components, and various molded laboratory equipment. Its most common use is in plastic bags.

The UPVC

The UPVC is a very useful plastic, it can be used to pipe and hose fittings, garden hose, electrical conduit, shoes, road conebases, drainage pipes, electrical conduit and ducting, detergent bottles.

Page 24: Group 5 power point

Properties of UPVC

The properties of UPVC are incredible, let´s see them:It's hard rigid, can be clear, can be solvent welded Softens: 70 - 100° C SG = 1.40

Unplasticised and Plasticised Polyvinyl Chloride UPVC is recyclable and has the number "3" as in it's identification code:
