Grounded in Faith, Growing to Serve

THE PASTOR’S CORNER

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Grace to you and peace. In the Gospel today, Jesus gives a model of prayer that will change us if we let it. • “When you pray, say: Father...” Disciples of Jesus know that God is not first and foremost a severe judge in a high court whom we’re meant to face only in fear. God is not a king living in a distant palace and approachable for favors only to those sponsored by the powerful. The spiritual reality for us is that we’ve become adopted sons and daughters of God by Baptism and we ought to know him as Father. Pray these words with thought and conviction and you will be changed. Your faith that God does indeed love you like a child will grow. • “...Hallowed be your name…” The name of God is not “hallowed,” or, in other words, made holy by us. The name of God is holy because God is holy. The prayers we say, the songs we sing, and the ceremonies we enact add nothing to God and can take nothing from God. Our prayer is that we would be changed. Our prayer is that we would experience an increase in the faith by which we not only know God and who he is, but reverence him and his name by personally adhering to him as the greatest good in our lives. Our lives should be lives of such goodness that they draw others to hallow the name of the Lord. • “Your kingdom come.” The kingdom of God—not a place, but the active and dynamic rule of God over the whole universe—has already come and will reach its perfection whether we pray for it or not. Our prayer is that the grace to participate in the kingdom of God be given to us. Indeed our prayer is the beginning of our active participation in the kingdom. We ask God not only to act in his unique way to bring about his rule and its perfection, to “make something happen,” so to speak. We ask for the grace to change, to join him in making something happen. We ask for the gift to put all our energies at his service so that his kingdom of justice, love and peace may increase and come to its perfection with our participation. • “Give us each day our daily bread…” Christians need bread, that is, everything necessary for life such as food and clothing. Can't we get these things through our own efforts? Why pray for them?

Our prayer reminds us that we must seek “bread” not only for ourselves but for all. This prayer changes us, giving us a new attitude and a renewed determination to help others. Beyond the realm of our bodily needs is the realm of the spirit. And here we certainly can’t presume to provide for ourselves. The wisdom of God on which our souls feed as the body feeds on bread is pure gift from God. The Bread of Life, Jesus himself, who comes to us Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in Holy Communion, is pure gift too. Our prayer changes us, helps us to be grateful always for those things that only God can provide and which he provides solely as a gift of love. • “…Forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive…” We cannot hope to be changed by God’s love if we do not love our brothers and sisters. It is not just a matter of forgetting the wrongs done to us; much more is demanded from us. It is not possible to pray to the Father if a brother or sister has something against us and we have not done all we can to be reconciled. • “…And do not subject us to the final test.” The test or temptation that we ask to be kept from is not our daily frailties and miseries (though they are not excluded), but the test in which we are tempted to reject the “gospel mind” where we prefer the “mind of the world,” abandoning completely our Master. We pray to be kept from the allurements of this world at the cost of our relationship to God and to be changed by his grace, which alone can give us the power to remain faithful to him. Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord! Fr. Christopher, O.P.

HOMELESS FAMILY FUND

This Week’s Readings Genesis 18:20-32 Psalm 138:1-3, 6-8 Colossians 2:12-14 Luke 11:1-13

A Case Manager from Haven Family House requested our assistance for her clients, a married couple in their early forties with a 6-month old daughter. They became homeless because their rent was substantially raised and they could not afford to pay the increase. They had been in the shelter for four months. They finally found a studio apartment out of the area which rents for $599 per month. They needed $1,500 for last month's rent and security deposit. They had saved $450 and we were happy to provide the $1,050 they needed in order to move. The mother is on maternity leave, but plans to go back to work in a grocery store as soon as they relocate. The father works for a stump removal company earning $1,800 per month. They have no other source of income and do not receive any government assistance. They were very happy to be able to move out of the shelter and grateful for our help. Thank you for your donations which allow the Lord's mercy to be shown to this family. "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His mercy endures forever." -Psalm 118:2 Please make your donations payable to St. Raymond Homeless Family Fund. They may be placed in the collection basket, sent to the parish office or through the St. Raymond website (e-contributions).

Next Week’s Readings Ecclesiastes 1:2; 2:21-23 Psalm 90:3-6, 12-14, 17 Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11 Luke 12:13-21

Meditation on Today’s Readings If the stakes were not so high, it would be almost comical: the patriarch Abraham haggling with God over the fate of Sodom. Will you spare the city if there are fifty innocent people? How about 45? Abraham perseveres; he negotiates with the Lord all the way down to ten. If there are only ten innocent people in Sodom the entire city will be spared. But something greater than this has happened. For the sake of one innocent person, we have all been spared. The guilty are saved for the sake of the Innocent. Each of us is a sinner, but even when we were dead in sin, God brought us to life in Christ. The sinless Son of Man nailed our sins to the cross and has forgiven us if only we will turn toward him in repentance. He has promised us that if we ask we will receive, if we knock the door will be opened. Let us persist in prayer. Let us turn toward Christ with all our heart. We are already forgiven if only we trust in his promise and his love.

Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say 'Hell' to someone who doesn't care much about you.

MISSION STATEMENT

St. Raymond Parish is a community united by our Catholic Faith as disciples of Jesus Christ. We seek communion with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit through ongoing personal and communal conversion to Christ and a deeper commitment to the mission Jesus gives each of us to preach the Gospel. The Sacred Scriptures and sacraments of the Church sustain us. We dedicate ourselves to Truth and strive to grow in love of God and neighbor through community, prayer, study, and service, as we work by grace to build up in one another and share freely with others the abundance of magnificent gifts God has given us.

The Dominican Corner

Wednesday July 27th is the memorial of Bl. Robert Nutter. While there are many and famous martyrs during the English Reformation, Dominicans were rarely among them. "Nutter was born at Burnley, Lancashire. He entered Brasenose College, Oxford in 1564 or 1565, and, with his brother John Nutter, also a Catholic martyr, became a student of the English College, Rheims. He was ordained at Soissons, on 21 December 1581 along with Venerable William Dean and George Haydock. Returning to England, he was committed to the Tower of London, along with his brother, also a priest,

on 2 February 1584. He remained in the pit forty-seven days, wearing irons for forty-three days, and twice was subjected to the tortures of "the scavenger's daughter". On 10 November 1584, he was again consigned to the pit. Robert witnessed his older brother’s execution before being released. The authorities hoped that he might inadvertently lead them to Catholic safe houses. He was again arrested and transported to France on 21 January 1585, with twenty other priests and one layman, aboard the Mary Martin of Colchester, from Tower Wharf. Landing at Boulogne, France, 2 February, he revisited Rome in July, but, returned then to England as escort to newly ordained priests. When the party was brought ashore at Gravesend, Nutter gave his name as Rowley, but was recognized and on 30 November 1585 again committed to prison in London, this time to Newgate Prison. In 1587 he was removed to the Marshalsea Prison, and thence, in 1590, was sent to Wisbech Castle. While in prison he joined the Dominicans. On 10 March 1600, the keeper having left the gate unlocked, Nutter and his companions made their escape. Some were never recaptured, but those who headed south were taken, and Nutter was sent to Lancaster, where he was executed on 26 July 1600.”

Sacristan Needed “There prepare for us" (Mark 14:15). Jesus called his disciples to prepare a room for the Last Supper--the first celebration of Mass. Our parish St. Raymond needs a leader for Mass preparation. Called "Sacristan," this is a part-time, paid position at the heart of our

community, making the celebration of Mass possible. Training is of course available. The Sacristan leads set-up and clean-up for the 8:15 am daily Mass (with days off); for the Saturday 5:15 pm Vigil Mass; for Sunday Masses at 8 am, 10 am, and 6 pm (in short, all weekend Masses); and for all Masses on Holy Days of Obligation, Ash Wednesday, and the Triduum. Additional duties include: set-up and clean-up for funerals, baptisms, weddings, and Masses for special occasions; training volunteers for sacristy-related tasks, such as Mass set-up for weekdays when absent, polishing brass, and tidying pews; maintaining an adequate supply of sacristy-related items such as altar bread, wine, candles, charcoal, incense, etc., timely ordering of seasonal items such as palms, ashes, and the Paschal candle; and maintaining, polishing and cleaning all liturgical items. If you or someone you know may be interested, please contact Fr. Christopher at 650-323-1755 or [email protected]. Thank you!

The Second Collection next week will be for

St. Vincent de Paul.
