INTRODUCTION

This report is submitted as a supplement to Excalibur report #87-P-8, V.L.F. Survey Results from the Sheraton South Claim Group, Lightning River Ptoject, Ontario.

The Sheraton South claim group was acquired as a result of an earlier integrated study of available geology and airborne geophysical data for the region delineating potential areas for gold mineralization.

A ground magnetic survey was commissioned following recommendations presented in the above report. The present reporting presents and discusses the results of this latest surveying.

DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY

The subject property is composed of fourteen (14) contiguous non-patented claims, each nominally of 40 acres (16 hectares). The claims are identified as:

Claim Nos. P950074 - P950087 inclusive

which in aggregate form a near-*rectangular block in the southeast corner of Sheraton Township, Porcupine Mining Division, Ontario. One alien claim falls within the group to form a hole (Fig. 2).

The claims are registered in the name of Placer Development Ltd., at that time located at 401 Bay St., Toronto, but now situated in the T-D Centre, viz. Suite 3500, IBM Tower, Box 350, Toronto, Ontario, M5K 1N3.

Access to the propety is fairly had south by bush road from Lipsett Lake 4 kms itself is reached by good gravel road from approximately 25 kms to the NNW. The land is forested with typical taiga growth. The higher to the east and south, but generally swampy ground and several beaver ponds make locally.

DETAILS OF SURVEY

The required grid of lines was prepared under contract for the earlier VLF-EM survey. It was re-occupied for the present work.

The lines themselves were oriented geographic N-S and were cut, chained and picketed to the property limits. The lines were spaced 100 metres apart and picketed at an interval of 25 metres. An orthogonal baseline, together with a parallel tie-line 1150 metres to the north, controlled this work.

The magnetic surveying of this grid was completed with a Geometrics G856 proton precession magnetometer, which measured the total magnetic field to within */- l nano-Tesla (nT). Diurnal variation was recorded by a field base-station . magnetometer, which provided continuous readings during the course of the survey. The base-station was located at 1150N, 785E on the grid, and assigned a nominal value of 58,938 nT. All grid data were then corrected for diurnal variation and normalized to this datum.

Results are shown both as profiles stacked against their line of recording (Dwg. No. PD+-212-17), and as contours {Dwg. No. PD-212-17A), the plan scale being 1:2500 in both cases. The station interval for these observations was 12.5 metres along the line.

DISCUSSION OF RESULTS

The magnetic responses cover a considerable range of values (58,350 to 71,682 nT) despite the small size of the area surveyed. The resulting contour map, however, is coherent and offers a good deal of information about the sub-surface. An interpretation map (Dwg. No. EJC-1860A) has been prepared showing the inferred sources and their boundaries, and possible structural control.

While considerable complexity is observed, this is mostly due to local variation of the magnetic properties and structural breaks within the lithological units. In broad detail, three distinctive units are differentiated based on their magnetic response. A fourth unit, characterized by its variable response and linear nature, is also recognized.

The grid is dominated by a unit (I) of low level response which occupies the centre of the area. Magnetic variation within this unit is typically low, and thus information concerning structural imprints through this domain is difficult to determine. On the eastern margin in direct contrast with the foregoing unit, is a unit (II) characterized by extremely high magnetic activity. The rocks within this unit appear highly fragmented by E-W trending lineaments, despite the apparent overall N-S trend. The third magnetic unit (III) exhibits a more moderate magnetic response and occupies the western and southern margins of the survey area. The fourth unit (IV), apparent as broken-up N-S striking magnetic ridges on lines 500E, 800E, 1300E, 1400E, 1500E, and 1600E are interpreted to be diabase dykes belonging to the Matachewan dyke swarm.

Little geologic information is available concerning the variety of rock types within this area. The published ODM compilation (Map #2205, Timmins-Kirkland Lake) defines the entire claim group as being underlain by undifferentiated metavolcanics (greenstones), cut in places by N-S trending diabase dykes. In this case, unit (I) may represent felsic tuffs and flows or other volcanic elastics; unit (II) may belong to anultramafic/ultrabasic lithology e.g. komatiites, but including the probability locally of weak iron formation (IF) horizons as shown, while unit (III) may represent dacitic/basaltic flows, dykes etc. Within units (II) and (III), areas of low magnetic response are observed. These may represent zones of alteration, that is magnetite depletion, within the host unit.

A large amount of structural information can be gleaned from the magnetic data, which is largely consistent with, and enlarges upon, the original VLF-EM interpreted lineaments. In general the area is dominated by E-W trending lineaments, most of which are interpreted to be faults/shears. Several high-angle, NW-SE trending faults are observed, and largely because of empirical reasons, these are regarded as most likely to provide favourable localities for mineralization, especially where they intersect the E-W shears.

Major dislocations are inferred along the boundary between units (I) and (II), as evidenced by the observed offsets. Also the central of three NW-SE striking faults in the grid southwest exhibits an evident dextral movement, as well as down-throwing the western side.

Four zones, designated A to D, have been selected as sites potentially favourable to mineralization and deserving of further attention. They will be discussed in their perceived order of importance.

Zone A: is selected as the most favourable as it is cut by two NW-SE striking lineaments and contains possible zones of alteration associated with E-W striking features within. Further, it is possible that a larger and deeper zone of alteration exists to the west side.

Zone B: is situated at the intersection of E-W oriented lineaments, a major NW-SE striking lineament, and the contact between units (I) and (II) itself. 1 An extensive embayment in this contact could signify important alteration locally. Adding to the contrast here are two flanking diabase dykes.

Zone C: is favourable for the same reasons as zone B, but appears to lack the presence of srong NW-SE faulting at its heart.

Zone D: is similar to zone C, but much smaller in size. It is included here for completeness only.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

It is concluded that the subject magnetic survey has been effected in a competent fashion, and that the data collected fulfilled all aspects of accuracy and levelling required. It has successfully delineated the underlying lithology and structure within the limitations of the method, and when integrated with the VLF-EM results, has provided four zones of interest which should receive further attention.

It is suggested that further work should consist of a survey using the Induced Polarization (IP) method in an attempt to locate the disseminated sulphides with which gold is known to be associated in this style of mineralization. The following programme is recommended:

Zone A: Survey Lines 400E to 1000E between BL 00 and 400N. Cut and survey the cross-lines 100N and 200N between 400E and 1100E.

Zone B and C: Survey Lines 1400E, 1500E, 1600E and 1700E to the limits of the grid. 1300E is also of interest. Additional E-W lines at 400N and SOON, and at SOON and 900N extending 200 metres to either side of the inferred contact are also suggested, if results are promising.

Zone D: Not a high priority, but may be surveyed on lines 100E and 200E, betweea SOON and 1100N.

It is felt that such a follow-up strategy will provide enough definitive information to determine whether drilling is necessary and, if so, the sites to be occupied for an appropriate lay-out of holes.
