SUMMARY

This report summarizes results of a ground magnetic and VLF-EM survey which was carried out to explore for stratiform platinum, palladium and gold mineralization in the ultramafic rocks of the Lac des Iles Complex. 80 km northwest of Thunder Bay. Ontario. The work was done on two contiguous block claims (claims 1191464 A 1191467) covering 13 claim units and is underlain by layered ultramafic rocks containing known sulphide mineralized "reefs" with highly anomalous precious metal values. As part of the program, a cut grid with a total length of 13 line kilometres and a line spacing of 100 metres was prepared prior to carrying out the geophysical survey. A total of 10,675 metres of line was sun eyed with a 25 metre station spacing. The magnetic survey was carried out with two GSM-18 Gem Systems Magnetometers using one instrument as a base station to correct for diurnal magnetic variation. The VLF-EM survey measured in-phase and quadrature components for transmitting stations at Seattle. Washington (NLK) at 18.6 kHz and Annapolis. Maryland (NSS) at 21.4 kHz. The present survey is a continuation of 17 line kilometres of ground magnetic and VLF-EM surveying carried out by R H. Sutcliffe on claims 119146? and H91464 in 1994.

The area is a region of strong magnetic contrasts with no simple correlation of rock types with total field magnetics. The strong contrasts in total field magnetics are considered to be largely due to variable alteration of the ultramafic rocks. Magnetic trends generally show good correlation with the strike of mapped lithologies and igneous layering. VLF-EM data for Annapolis transmissions are also consistent with magnetic trends. VLF-EM in-phase data has been filtered using a Fraser filter to assist in interpretation of conductor locations. The results of this survey provide good evidence for the continuation of units or structures hosting the mineralized reefs for at least 400 to 500 metres into the north part of the claim group. In addition, previously untested anomalies have similar characteristics to the anomalies associated with the known mineralized "reefs".

During surveying a previously unreported occurrence of chromite was found in altered peridotite in claim 1191464.

LOCATION AND ACCESS

The Lac des Iles Complex is a mafic to ultramafic intrusive complex located 80 km northwest of Thunder Bay. Ontario (Figure l). The Complex is host to significant platinum, palladium and base metal mineralization.

The claim group can be accessed from Lac des Iles or from a system of logging roads which reach within 1.5 km of the northeastern corner of the claim group. An all-weather gravel road, constructed to give access to the Lac des Iles Mines Ltd. property, connects the south shore of Lac des Iles to highway 527 and is located 5 km south of the claim group. For the present work program the claim group was accessed by the logging road system.

The claims OD which this survey was carried out consist of two contiguous, unpatented. block claims which were staked by R.H. Sutcliffe and are recorded on the Lac des Iles area claim map (G-739), Thunder Bay Mining Division. The claims are wholly owned by R.H. Sutcliffe. 793 William Street. London. Ontario. N5Y 2R7. The details of the claims on which this work was carried out is tabulated below.

PREVIOUS EXPLORATION

Area - Economic interest in the Lac des Iles region was initially for copper-nickel sulphide mineralization in mafic and ultramafic rocks. Since the 1970's exploration interest has focussed on platinum group elements, particularly palladium and platinum. In 1975 and 1976. exploration work in the gabbroic rocks immediately south of Lac des Iles by Boston Bay Mines Limited and Texasgulf Canada Limited revealed a deposit of 20.4 million tonnes grading 6.34 g/t Pd-^Pt. 0.62 g/t Au. and G.22% Cu-Ni named the Roby Zone (The Northern Miner, v. 62. October 21 . p. 27. 1976: Canadian Mines Handbook. 1976-1977. p. 314). Lac Des Iles Mines Ltd. initiated production on the Roby Zone in November 1993 and is presently mining 3.000 tonnes per day from an open pit mine. The mine is located 5 km south of the claim group.

Claim Group - The most significant work carried out on the claim group was performed under a joint venture by Equinox Resources Limited and Technigen Corporation between 1986 and 1987. Equinox held a group of 37 contiguous claims which covered the present claim group. In 1986 and 1987. the joint venture carried out geochemical studies (625 soil samples. 224 rock samples), geological mapping, airborne geophysical surveys (Questor. Input Mk VI FM Macnctic Survey), ground geophysics (Rideau Geophysics. Induced Potent ia! Resistivity Survey) and diamond drilling (2 holes for a total of 603 metres). One ot the drill holes (257 metres) was located on the present claim group. Significant results (as reported in the Assessment Files Research Office. Ministry of Northern Development and Mines. on the present Lac des Iles claim group. Maximum assay values of up to l .68 g/t Pt-*-Pd and 0.26 g/t Au have been determined in the reefs. The one drill hole intersected 3 feet with 0.85 e t Pt-Pd and 0.07 g/t Au. Ratios of Pt to Pd are typically on the order of l :3 in the reef.

In February and March 1994, R.H. Sutcliffe carried out 17 kilometres of ground magnetic and VLF surveys over claims 1191463 and 1191464. The present survey is a continuation of surveying carried out in 1994.

GEOLOGY

The claim group is underlain by ultramafic and lesser mafic intrusive rocks of the northern part of the Archean age Lac des Iles Complex (Figure l ). Mapping by Sutcliffe and Sweeny (Ontario Geological Survey, Geological Series Preliminary Map P. 3047, 1986) defined three major rock units in this area. These are: serpentinite and serpentinized peridotite (composed of pyroxene and serpentinized olivine); clinopyroxenite (composed dominantly of clinopyroxene): and websterite (composed of both clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene). Locally the websterite contains interstitial plagioclase and is termed gabbronorite. In the claim group, these rock units form layers on a scale of 100 metres in width. Metre-scale igneous layering defined by varying proportions of minerals is locally present. Layering dips 35" to 600 northwest and strikes at approximately 0300. parallel to the strike of the rock units. The repetition of lithologies indicates that several cycles of crystallization, probably resulting from repeated injection of magma, has occurred. The cycles from peridotite to clinopyroxenite to websterite indicate mat the top of the sequence is to the west.

Minor amounts of sulphide mineralization, typically consisting of less than I 0'o chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite, are particularly associated with the websterite and gabbronorite layers. A grab sample of ultramafic rock with less than 1*4 chalcopyrite mineralization from the claim group collected during OGS mapping assayed 220 ppb Au, 350 ppb Pt, and 2.200 ppb Pd (Lindhardt and Sutcliffe. 1986. Ontario Geological Survey, Miscellaneous Paper 132. pages 80 to 81.). Subsequent exploration by Equinox and Technigen delineated two stratiform sulphide "reefs". several metres thick and continuous over a strike length of up to 800 metres. These "reefs" contain only small amounts of sulphide yet they have highly anomalous precious metal values of up to l .68 g/t Pt+Pd and 0.26 g/t Au.

GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY

Grid

The ground magnetic and VLF-electromagnetic surveys were carried out over the property utilizing a cut grid with a line spacing of 100 metres (Figure 2). The total length of the cut grid including the base line at 0300 is 13,080 metres. The grid lines at 1200 were picketed with a 25 metre station spacing.

Instrumentation

Two model uSM-iS Gem Systems Magnetometers were used for the magnetic survey. The GSM-18 is a portable proton precession magnetometer with a built-in microprocessor and memory. The GSM-18 has a resolution of 0.1 gamma and an accuracy of 0.2 gammas over the

operating range of 20.000 to 100.000 gammas.

One model EM-16 Geonics VLF receiver was used for the VLF-electromagnetic survey. The EM-16 measures In-phase and quadrature components of the vertical magnetic field as a percentage of the horizontal primary field. The instrument has a sensitivity of -/-I 0'o for both In-phase and quadrature components.

Surveying

Raw data collected by the mobile magnetometer (S/N 51240) was corrected for diurnal magnetic variation against the base station readings. Reduced magnetic data was transferred to a PC computer via a Gem Systems communication interface and RS-232 port.

The VLF-EM survey measured In-phase and Quadrature components for two transmitting stations. The stations used were: Seattle, Washington (NLK) at 18.6 kHz located at 48" 12' N 121 0 55' W (Channel l): and Annapolis. Maryland (NSS) at 21.4 kHz located at 380 59' N 760 27' W (Channel 2). Figure 3 shows the orientation of the stations and the directions in which readings were taken with respect to the grid. Readings for channel l (Seattle) were taken in a SSE direction and readings for channel 2 (Annapolis) were taken in a SW direction. VLF-EM readings were recorded manually.

Surveying was carried out between May 11 to May 17, 1995.

Results

The results of the survey are presented on the ten accompanying 1:5,000 scale maps which are as follows:

The location of the survey grid with respect to Lac des lies and the claim boundaries is siiown on Figure 2 and Map l. Contour maps were made using a bi-directional griding algorithm and 12.5 metre grid cells. No directional filtering was applied to the contour maps.

Total Field Magnetics - The arra is a region of strong magnetic contrasts with no simple

correlation of rock types with total field magnetics. The strong contrasts in total field magnetics are considered to be largely due to variable alteration of the ultramafic rocks. Known outcrops of magnetite-rich serpentinite, however, correlate with magnetic lows. This may explained by the fact that paleomagnetic investigations of samples from the Lac des Iles Complex show evidence of having acquired a reversely magnetized remnant magnetic component which is probably due to Keweenawan thermal overprinting (Prof. H. C. Palmer, University of Western Ontario, personal communication, 1986).

I'Lt'-EM - VLF-EM data for both Seattle and Annapolis transmissions show broadly consistent trends. VLF-EM trends are also generally consistent with magnetic trends. VLF-EM In-phase data has been filtered using a Fraser filter to assist in interpretation of anomaly locations. The Fraser filter converts the cross-over from positive to negative In-phase readings into a positive response. The Fraser filter must be applied in a consistent sense with respect to the survey lines. Annapolis data was filtered using the filter up the lines ( i.e. east to west), while Seattle data was filtered using the filter down the lines ( i.e. west to east). On the Fraser filtered contour maps, only positive (red) anomalies are considered significant. These zones are considered to represent the approximate position of conductors and are referred to as VLF-EM conductors in the following discussion.

Interpretation

Magnetic trends and VLF-EM conductor trends, particularly for the Annapolis channel, are broadly consistent and suggest a change in trend from approximately 0300 in the south of the grid to approximately OOO0 in the north.

All of the mapped serpentinite and peridotite units (map unit l) are associated with magnetic lows and coincident VLF-EM conductor trends for the Seattle channel.

The sulphide "reef which crosses lines 1700N and l SOON at approximately 100E is associated with a strong magnetic high and VLF-EM conductor indicated by the Annapolis channel. The sulphide "reef* which crosses line 1800N at 300E is associated with a VLF-EM conductor indicated by both the Annapolis and Seattle channels. While the anomalies are probably related to structures or rock units hosting the "reef mineralization, rather than a response to the mineralization itself, the geophysical data provides evidence for the continuation of structures or units related to these reefs into the north part of the grid.

A break in magnetic patterns, trending at approximately 0700 through 1700N-250W and 2100N- 175F. suggests that minor faulting may have locally disrupted the igneous stratigraphy. A sinistral displacement is suggested by the offset of the prominent magnetic highs between lines 2000N and 2100N.

DISCOVERY OF A CHROMITE OCCURRENCE

During the magnetometer survey, a new occurrence of chromite was observed in altered peridotite between lines 1900N and 2000N at approximately 200E. The chromite occurs as rinds up to l cm thick on rounded decimeter-scale inclusions of gabbro with sulphide mineralization which are hosted by altered peridotite. Grab samples were taken for assay purposes.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FURTHER WORK

The Lac des Iles Complex formed from a precious metal enriched magma as indicated by the number of known precious metal occurrences in the complex. In the claim group, the presence of stratiform "reefs" with small amounts (*^1 0 6) of sulphide mineralization but highly anomalous precious metal values indicates that sulphides effectively concentrated precious metals in this sequence of rocks. The rational for further work is that discovery of a new "reef or a part of the known "reefs" with 3 to 49/* sulphide is likely to contain ore-grade precious metal values. Previous exploration did not determine the full strike extent of the mineralized "reefs", test for increased precious metal concentrations at depth, or test for other mineralized layers. The "reefs" are considered to warrant further exploration.

Tile results of this survey provide good evidence for the continuation of units or structures hosting the mineralized reefs into the north part of the claim group. This suggests an extension of the known mineralized units for at least 400 to 500 metres to the north. In addition, the survey indicates that previously untested anomalies, such as the VL-F-EM conductor crossing l SOON at 425W. have similar characteristics to the anomalies associated with the known mineralized "reefs".

Further work on the Lac des Iles claim group should involve additional geological mapping and lithogeochemical sampling. Ratios of precious metal to sulpher should be used to predict horizons with the greatest probability for concentrating precious metals. In the precious metal "reef type environment these horizons will generally be at the lowest stratigraphic level at which sulphur saturation was achieved. This mapping and sampling will have the purpose of prioritizing targets for drilling.
