LET’S MOVE IN LIBRARIES!
Dr. Noah Lenstra, Assistant Professor of Library and Information Studies at the University of North Carolina - Greensboro
Who am I and
how did I get
here?
If museums can do this, why not public libraries???
What can YOU do in
YOUR library to increase
physical activity?
It’s all about
COMMUNITY
“The Community Catalyst Initiative challenges museums and libraries to transform how they collaborate with their communities.”
SEVEN ways libraries get us moving
1. Make movement part of existing programs
2. Get people active outdoors
3. New collections
4. New spaces and infrastructures
5. Fitness and movement classes
6. For FUN!
7. Be a model for others
1. Make movement part of existing programs

Yoga-inspired movement and stillness for kids 3—6
Let’s Move!
Happy Spines!
Modifying movement instruction for kids
Key Takeaway #1: Yoga Offers a Model
for Whole-Child Engagement
Key Takeaway #2: If We Care about Early Literacy, We Have to Care about Physical Literacy
The Synergistic Effect of Teaching a Combined Explicit Movement and Phonological Awareness Program to Preschool Aged Students
Deborah Callcott, Lorraine Hammond, and Susan Hill
Early Childhood Education Journal, 2015
“Findings suggest that teaching pre-primary aged children early literacy and movement in tandem is more beneficial than teaching either in isolation.”
A Quasi-Experimental Study of a Movement and Preliteracy Program for 3- and 4-Year-Old Children
Chloe Bedard, Emily Bremer, Wenonah Campbell, John Cairney
Frontiers in Pediatrics, 2017
“The results of this study show that participation in a direct instruction, community-based, parent-oriented movement and preliteracy program can significantly improve movement and preliteracy skill levels of preschool children with typical development.”
Time to Move!
Let’s talk, sing, and read as we dance for the sun!

Key Takeaway #4: Mindful Movement and
Stillness Are for YOU Too
"I just finished my regular storytime, and I threw in a few yoga-inspired touches. It was amazing! I can’t stop smiling! An adult came up at the end with a big smile on his face and said, 'This was magical.' That’s one of the greatest compliments I’ve received in my career. I realize the practices I did weren’t that different from my typical programs. However, I was very intentional in my planning and presentation, rather than just running on autopilot as it’s easy to do when you’ve been doing the same thing for a decade. That intentionality made a big difference in how I felt, how I connected with the group, and how they received what I was doing. And there are so many lessons in that for every facet of my life."
