GROOMING YOUR CAVALIER Keeping your cavalier looking his best is not difficult but proper grooming does require some diligence. There is no substitute for daily care. You can do the grooming yourself as many professional groomers do not groom cavaliers properly and your efforts will help your dog look his best. Develop the habit of cleaning under your cavalier’s eyes every day. It will contribute greatly to your dog’s appearance. Using a large cotton ball or cotton pad, wipe under each eye with Diamond Eye or a similar product. Cavaliers have large eyes and a good portion of the eye is exposed to the elements. Dirt collects in the inside corners of the eye and excess tears create stain under the eyes. Cleaning and drying under the eyes daily will help prevent unattractive tear stains and the bacteria which may accompany neglected eyes. Wipe the inside corner of the eye up and in. Wiping down will just spread the eye stain. If your puppy is very young he may have very little coat, but now is the time to accustom your cavalier to being brushed and combed. Using a very soft bristle brush go over your puppy every day, preferably when he’s tired. This few minutes a day of pleasant brushing will teach the puppy to enjoy his grooming session. Once he is older, you will still use the soft brush on his top coat but will also need a pin brush and a slicker brush for his ears and featherings. The best brushes and combs are easily available through catalogs. Pet stores rarely carry high quality grooming tools. A few well chosen brushes should last you for many years and are definitely worth the initial investment. When taking time to brush your puppy, also play with the puppy’s feet to help him become accustomed to the nail and foot trimming process. Another good practice is to run your finger around in your puppy’s mouth as though you were brushing his teeth. He will soon realize that you are not hurting him, making the future brushing process easier. General Rules for Grooming your Adult Cavalier: You should bathe your dog at least twice a month but weekly bathing is fine if you use the right products. Your dog should look and smell clean so bathe accordingly. Comb or brush gently to prevent damage to the skin or breakage to the coat. If you can hear the sound of the brush, you are brushing too hard. The best time to brush out a coat is after a bath while using a forced air or stand dryer. When you brush a dry coat use a watered down detangling spray first. It’s best not to brush or comb out a totally dry coat. Keep ahead of mats which commonly form behind the ears, under the legs, and in the long feathering on the rear end of the dog. Be sure to keep nails trimmed and never forget to trim the dew claws also. Properly done, grooming your dog need not be a chore and can be a lot of fun. Bathing your dog is an opportunity to bond. It is an intimate moment between you and your dog. It is a moment to show him or her how much you care, to feel their skin and make sure everything is all right with them. Ideally you’ll start bathing you dog as a puppy. Be gentle, but lather and rub dirty areas as needed, as you might do on your own body. Don’t rush the animal through the experience. Take your time in properly lathering and let the shampoo sit for a few minutes in order to let the natural oils sink into the coat. When bathing, care should always be taken to thoroughly rinse all traces of shampoo to prevent skin irritations. Care should also be taken to prevent water from getting into the ear canal or nose, while

GROOMING YOUR CAVALIER

Keeping your cavalier looking his best is not difficult but proper grooming does require some diligence.

General Rules for Grooming your Adult Cavalier:

• You should bathe your dog at least twice a month but weekly bathing is fine if you use the right products.  Your dog should look and smell clean so bathe accordingly.

• Comb or brush gently to prevent damage to the skin or breakage to the coat.    If you can hear the sound of the brush, you are brushing too hard.

• The best time to brush out a coat is after a bath while using a forced air or stand dryer.  When you brush a dry coat use a watered down detangling spray first.  It’s best not to brush or comb out a totally dry coat.

• Keep  ahead of mats which  commonly  form behind  the  ears, under  the  legs,  and  in  the  long feathering on the rear end of the dog.

• Be sure to keep nails trimmed and never forget to trim the dew claws also.

Care should also be taken  to prevent water  from getting  into the ear canal or nose, while

also  preventing  any  products  from  getting  into  the  dog’s  eyes. Gently  towel  and  pat  dry  your  dog.  Chamois cloths work well  followed by a bath  towel.   Comb out all areas  taking care  to eliminate any mats.   Blow dry the coat with warm  (never hot) air, brushing and fluffing as you go.   Use a stand free dryer or a hand held dryer (you may have to have help with this).   Do a final comb out when finished.  Coats stay nicest if combed out daily and your dog should be bathed on a bi‐weekly basis.

Addendum to Robeft's Pet Clip fnstructions

If you desire a more natural look (with more backcoat left),substitute a number 2 snap on comb for the #7 blade.Robert likes to use a #30 or #4O blade under the snap oncomb; I am paftial to a #15 blade. Use the #2 comb /blade with the grain, I.e. in the same direction as coatgrowth. After you are satisfied with the results, mess thehair up on the back (I run my hand backwards, but you cancomb or brush the clipped area up and backwards), thenreclip with the snap on comb. Repeat several times untileverything lays nice and nothing is sticking up toonoticeably, even when they shake or you scruff up the hainThere are longer combs available for leaving even morebackcoat. The higher the numbef the shorter the clip, so a# L y2 is a bit longer, #1 even more so, then a'# Yz, thenthey go to letters. I think the lettered combs, even the "Aiwould be too long to be of use in this kind of trim.
