WELCOME TO OUR LIBRARIESWe are thrilled to bring you an Autumn program full of inspiration, fun and intellectual challenge.

It is a busy quarter with something for everyone, no matter what your age or interests. Celebrate the art of biography with Gough Whitlam’s acclaimed biographer Jenny Hocking and ponder how to create the perfect learning environment with passionate educator John Marsden.

In May we will participate in Library and Information Week by joining other libraries across the country for National Simultaneous Storytime. We also honour the centenary of the ANZAC landing with some very special events. In this program, we introduce a new section – Makerspaces, full of sessions which will get you creating great things with some new IT skills.

There is something very special happening at Bannockburn Library – a series of workshops with professional artists will be presented in partnership with the Golden Plains Shire Council.

We have a great program of activities for children and young people during the term and over the school holidays. Make sure you encourage the young people in your life to review the events on offer especially for them.

DR. RUTH LEE – WOMAN WAR DOCTOR: THE LIFE OF MARY DE GARIS

In every generation there are individuals who create change. Australian Mary De Garis, a pioneering doctor in the early 20th century, is one of these individuals. This fascinating biography portrays her life, loves and struggles as part the first generation of women ‘medicals’ to graduate from Melbourne University. She was a ‘war doctor’ in Serbia before settling in Geelong as Geelong’s first female obstetrician. She was beloved by generations of women, providing safe childbirth before the advent of antibiotics and blood transfusions. Dr Ruth Lee will talk about her new biography of this important woman. All ages.

HARVEY BROADBENT – DEFENDING GALLIPOLI: THE TURKISH DEFENCE

Harvey Broadbent is the author of Gallipoli, the Fatal Shore (2005) and Voices of the First World War (2014) and is a leading authority on Turkey and its history. In a 23-year career with the ABC, he has produced four documentary films on Gallipoli and he is currently the director of the Gallipoli Centenary Research Project. Harvey spent five years translating everything from official records to soldiers' personal diaries and letters to unearth the Turkish story for his latest book Defending Gallipoli: the Turkish Defence. It is chilling and revealing to see this famous battle in Australian history through the ‘enemy’ lens. All ages.

Celebrate World Poetry Day by acknowledging seven local poets published in The Best Australian Poems 2014, edited by Geoff Page and published by Black Inc. This inspiring evening will be hosted by Amanda Johnson and will feature readings by Diane Fahey, Alyson Miller, David McCooey, Joan Kerr, Maria Takolander and Anthony Lynch. Robyn Rowland’s poem will be read by Anthony Lynch. This is the fifth consecutive year that we have celebrated the achievements of our region's poets. All ages.

Prof. Jenny Hocking is Research Professor and Australian Research Council DORA Fellow in the National Centre for Australian Studies at Monash University. An award-winning scriptwriter and acclaimed biographer as well as a regular media commentator, Jenny has written several books including the major political biographies about Gough Whitlam, Lionel Murphy and Frank Hardy. Her work has been long-listed in the 2009 Walkley Awards and shortlisted for several literary awards including the Magarey Medal for Biography, the Queensland Premier’s Awards, The Age Book of the Year and the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards. Jenny Hocking is the inaugural Distinguished Whitlam Fellow at the Whitlam Institute within the University of Western Sydney and was also the Historical Script Consultant on the recent ABC-TV series Whitlam: Power and Passion. Hear Jenny talk about the art of the biography. All ages.

Rarely seen items from the archive collection of the Heritage Centre have inspired some of the region's finest writers to put pen to page. Join the writers and their inspiration in this historic setting at Council Chambers, City Hall. This unique event gives you the opportunity to hear poetry and prose inspired by significant objects that reflect our region’s history. These objects and the writing they have inspired will see the ‘Light of Night’ together for the first time as a part of the 2015 Geelong After Dark. OPEN MIND LECTURE

JOHN MARSDEN: EDUCATION

John Marsden is an Australian writer, teacher and school principal. He has won every major literary award in Australia for young people's fiction, and the 2006 Lloyd O'Neil Award for contributions to Australian publishing. His novels have inspired film and television, and the imaginations of many young people throughout the world for more than 30 years. He has a string of huge hits highlighted by the Tomorrow series and Ellie chronicles.

John's interest in education has never waned and in 2006 he established his own school, Candlebark, which has been described by John as "somewhere between Steiner and The Simpsons". Its friendly, lively and positive atmosphere has resulted in such early success that it has a four-year waiting list. John will talk about education, igniting the learning flame and keeping it alight, and whether there is a perfect environment for education.

Tony Windsor reflects on the three years of the Gillard 'hung parliament': its achievements, testing moments, the characters and his thinking behind the positions he took. He recalls the 2010 election, the 17 days that followed, what influenced him and working with others in the hung parliament for three years. Tony was born in Quirindi, New South Wales. He was a farmer before entering politics and now, after retiring from politics, continues to farm alongside his sons at Werris Creek. Hear Tony talk about his memoirs.

Stephen Cummings first achieved success as lead singer with The Sports, a pop band that had a number of hits in the late 70's including the classic "Who Listens to the Radio?". Stephen has now released 23 albums. His fourth album, A New Kind of Blue, won an ARIA award for "best adult contemporary album" and his eighth album, Falling Swinger, was included in Rolling Stone's list of "100 essential Australian albums". Stephen has also published three novels: Wonderboy, Stay Away From Lightening Girl and Will it Be Funny Tomorrow. Join Stephen in conversation with Dr John Lamp, Associate Professor, Deakin University School of Information and Business Analytics, and host of 94.7 FM The Pulse weekly program, Meanderings.

When Paul Livingston (aka Flacco) discovered that his father had been court-martialled for going absent without leave in WW2, not once, but twice, he knew he had to find out why his father had done it. He discovered there were many servicemen who had done the same thing, and like his dad, they weren't running from the battlefield. Join Paul as he discusses the story of his family, and his father's war, in Absent Without Leave.

Bring your work of 10,000 words or less to this session to learn how to create headings, tables of contents and a navigation structure for your eBook. This session provides an opportunity for local amateur authors and poets to create a born-digital book and have it uploaded onto the library's Overdrive platform for inclusion in a local authors collection and become part of our eBook collection. In 2013 Ina and a companion travelled around the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Austria, Italy, Croatia, and Hungary on bicycles. They travelled nearly 3000kms and had many great experiences. This year, another three month cycle trip around Europe is planned, however this time they will be joined by an 82 year young cyclist! Join Ina as she talks about taking on the challenge of cycling Europe!
