Amato Grivel, Laurent’s younger brother, using the Chromolly alloy (Nickel-Chrome-
Molybdenum), created a really strong crampon, thinner and lighter than the others: 360 grams a pair. These crampons, the Super Leggero Grivel, have been used to conquer the
3 highest peaks in the world, the Everest, the K2, and the Kangchenjunga.

ONcE UPON A TIME IN
1818
The Grivel family of blacksmiths, started to transform their
production of agricultural tools in what would later become
mountain equipment. So in a sea of scepticism the
first ice axe was born.
The English engineer Oscar Eckenstein was received with similar scepticism when he asked Henry Grivel to
manufacture the first modern crampon in history.

1909
1929Henry’s son Laurent came
up with the brilliant invention of the two front points,
allowing climbers to stand face on whilst attacking the steep
ice and snow gradients.

INNOVATIONTIMELINE
GRIVEL first carbon fiber shaft in the world! 2003
Rambo crampon: a rigid crampon with a stable
platform and no vibrations. Forged front points were
added for the first time, a huge improvement.
Grivel presented its new crampons with four different binding systems, suitable for all types of boots and different functions. The use of plastic for the first time would
find many imitators!
The Machine:the ice axe that
revolutionised the design of technical tools.
From now on this was the shape that set the standard for everyone!.
GRIVEL installs a solar paneled roof and starts to produce its goods
with solar energy.
1996
In 1998 experience gained from competitions spread
the idea of climbing without leashes, Grivel was the first to present an ice axe with a crook in it aiding leashless climbing: top machine.
1998
GRIVEL resolves the problem of snow build up under crampons with the first pro-active anti-balling plate. This gets rid of the snow with every step taken, using its flexibility and the alpinist’s movement. Other manufacturers have tried to find an alternative to this Grivel patent but the truth is that no other real alternative exists!
2004
2007
Monster and its flexible shaft appears in.
Manic competitioners, boulderers, dry toolers
and total-dry fanatics all adopt Monster that isn’t just a step forward in ice axes but an extremely
efficient extension of hands for anchoring on the most
difficult terrains.
The ultra lightweight Matrix ice axes and
Rambo evolution 4 crampons: easier to fit, lighter and better for the latest generation’s new
posturing.

2012
2014
The new Quantum ice axe range continues this cutting edge tradition
introducing a carbon composite material used in the aerospace industry. Our composite
Quantum ice axes are the lightest in the world, lighter than those in carbon fibre, lighter than
those made with any other material.
2006
Grivel introduces X-BLADE the first flat one piece ice axe specifically designed for ice climbing.

3 reasons to prefer grivel ice axes
Grivel has for nearly 200 years led the deve-lopment of Ice Climbing equipment, but to move ahead in this rapidly changing “fast &fu-rious” new age of technology and materials, we decided to make a radical improvement in our approach to development. This is the reason we decided to create a new dept a real Laboratory for Development, a place where we can explore the possible and beyond.

PluME gThe evolution of the TwinGate
system continues with the double
wire carabiner.
Super light carabiner with super
light double wire gate.
Only 39 grams for the safest wire
carabiner.
A clever S-design of the first wire
offers the key-lock benefit.
• Bomb proof Twingate
patented system
• Two wire gates for minimum
weight (39 grams!)
• S wire design with key lock
effect
• Hot drop forged
sYMThe symmetrical carabiner was the first option in connectors
and also today its smooth and symmetrical shape is a beloved
choice for simplicity and manoeuvrability.
Because of its shape though the load is shared equally between
the spine side and gate side of the carabiner. Grivel solved
this problem of resistance using the Twin Gate solution,
which keeps the strength at a highest level compared to other
symmetrical carabiners.
The second problem with the old symmetrical carabiners was
the small opening of the gate: Grivel solved this problem with
a side rotation of the doors that allows a very big opening,
keeping all the safety features.
• Bomb proof twingate patented system
• Proven symmetrical shape
• Symmetrical shape that prevents shifting
• Side movement for a large gate opening
• Rounded and large surface for rope and belay loop
• Hot drop forged
clEPsYDraThe main problem with the belay carabiner on the
harness has always been to keep it in the correct
position both with and without the rope. Same
problem in rappelling.
Grivel has designed a totally new carabiner where a
simple second wire gate isolates the belay loop and
keeps the proper orientation even with the carabiner
door open.
To place the Clepsydra is a totally automatic and
intuitive operation.
• Bomb proof twingate patented system
• Second wire gate isolating the belay loop for belaying
or rappelling
• Closed belay loop even with the carabiner’s door open
• Totally automatic operation
• Rounded and large surface for rope and belay loop
• Hot drop forged

Grivel started to make harnesses in the early ‘80s of the past century. The picture shows Patrick Edlinger, at the time the strongest climber in the world and one of the fathers of modern climbing, wearing a Grivel harness while winning the 1986 Bardonecchia climbing competition.
Grivel uses now for its harnesses the Web-Core manufacturing process. A broad, yet thin and light piece of webbing which is laser cut to match the harness’ shape and is laminated - at high temperatures - to both the interior and exterior of the harness. This webbing, which is the same size as the comfort parts, assures optimal pressure distribution without any compression zones where the body is in contact with the harness. There are numerous benefits to this innovation: it allows for thinner, compact and lighter weight harnesses whilst increasing comfort.
The APOLLO is a classic, fully adjustable harness thanks to its 2 waist buckles and fully adjustable leg loops. It benefits from the latest Web-Core technology yet it retains a simplistic style with traditional gear loops. It is designed for multi-activity in the mountains and climbing.
• Web-Core technology• Simple and comfortable• 2 adjustment buckles.• 2 sizes
The POSEIDON is a special harness for mountaineering, expeditions and ice falls. It is the fist waterproof harness! The Dry technology used in the ropes is now used also on the Poseidon harness. No more wet legs loops nor wet waist belt on your body!
• Web-Core technology• Dry treatment for wet conditions• Simple leg loops, thin ad light, totally removable
from the harness.• 4 adjustment buckles.• 2 sizes• Simple and comfortable
The ARES is a new interpretation of alpine harness. The new and special design allows a fantastic freedom for the legs with no compression points in the front part. Fully adjustable with 4 buckles. It benefits from the latest Web-Core technology. A simple and intuitive model.
• Web-Core technology• Total freedom and comfort• 4 adjustment buckles• 2 sizes

CHECK yOUR GEAR BEfORE
Sports climbing is not a safe sport in itself, but it can become safe when you do the basic things right, as naturally as waking up in the morning.
To do this you have to start off in the right way, that is you have to do things well before you start your climb, both in the mountains and indoors.
First rule: the harness. Mainly check that it is well adjusted on the sizes of the user and that the buckles are all closed, as they should be.
The main piece of advice is to check mutually.
Second rule: the knot that joins the rope to the harness. Choose the one you like, and do it carefully from the start until the end, without distrac-ting yourself or talking to your friends or answering to questions. Then have
your partner check it, and check his. If the belayer is not linked, check if the rope has an end knot: it is not rare to have a rope which is not long enough for the pitch you are climbing.
Third rule: the belay system. Use the one you like, but check carefully that the rope slides in right direction, that it is properly closed and that it is linked to the belay loop of the harness. The manufacturer instructions are nor-mally clear and complete, but you have to study them and follow them each time you use it.
Fourth rule: the safety carabiner that links the belay loop on the harness to the belay system. It must be a safety ca-rabiner, and you have to make sure that the screw gate is properly closed. Once again, the advice here is to mutually check that this has been done in the right way.
That is why Grivel has developed the new Twing Gate carabiners, where the two gates do the job of the screw-gate … without the screw and in a fully natural way, without the need to remember nor to do anything. But until you own one: screw and check!
PS. These remarks are also true in the extreme situation when your partner is the climbing world champion and you are a beginner: check if the champion has closed all the buckles, harness and screw-gate carabiner where your life will be attached to. Mutual control is the only guarantee.

TOWARDS 200 YEARSIn 1818 the Grivel family of blacksmiths started to transform their production of agricultural tools to satisfy the rather peculiar demands of a new breed of wealthy tourists who, for unfathomable re-asons, wanted to climb the mountains! So the Grivel ice axe came into being sur-rounded by skepticism. The English engineer Oscar Eckenstein was received with similar skepti-cism when in 1909 he asked Henry Grivel to m a n u f a c t u r e the first modern Grivel crampons. In 1929, Henry’s son Laurent made the brilliant invention of the two front points, allowing climbers to stand face on whilst attacking the steep ice and snow gradients. This innovation was the key to the conquest of the last unsolved route of the Alps: the North of the Eiger, 21-24th July, 1938.
In 1936, in collaboration for the first time with the Cogne steelworks,
Amato Grivel, Laurent’s younger brother, using the Chromolly alloy (Nickel-Chrome-Molybdenum), cre-ated a really strong Grivel crampon, thinner and therefore lighter. They forged Grivel crampons weighing
360 grams a pair, up until then impossible. These Grivel cram-
pons, the Super Leggero Gri-vel, have been used to con-
quer the 3 highest peaks in the world, the Eve-
rest, the K2, and the Kangchenjunga.
In 1982 new blood took over a rather sleepy, uncompeti-
tive Grivel that had allowed itself to be overtaken by rival companies. New management led by Gioachino Gobbi was convinced that over a hundred years of tradition, the brand name and the company’s loca-tion were a recipe for future success.
1996 = The Machine: the Grivel ice axe that revolutionized the design of technical tools. From now on this was the shape that all manufacturers would use.
In 2003 Grivel crampons resolve the problem of snow build up under crampons with the first pro-active anti-balling plate.
Today 196 years later, Grivel, still ba-sically one large family, continues in its balancing act between tradition and progress, between forging and aerospace technology, between intu-
ition and R&D.
Grivel Mont-Blanc has achieved all possible certifications: from TUV GS (Sichereit Gepruft) for product qua-lity to ISO 9001-Vision 2000 for our management system and even the ISO 14001 environmental Certifica-tion for Environmental Compatibi-lity.
In May 2009 the company opened a new production unit in a much big-ger space where it is easier to mana-ge the different lines of production. This will help our flexibility in the face of the new demands that come in daily from around the world. This new set up means that we can widen our range of products and maintain our avant-garde position in the mar-ketplace.
The new location has allowed us to change to solar energy making our production cleaner and more eco-friendly. Since 2010 all the energy needs are produced by our photovol-taic panels.
Every year they save 1,173 barrels of oil!
