Red ChamberThursday, Feb. 18, 2016 / 7:30 p.m. Nightingale Concert Hall, Church Fine Arts Building
From fast and furious bluegrass to Chinese Imperial Court classics to cutting-edge jazz fusion, the traditional and not-so-traditional repertoire of Red Chamber spans centuries. The red-hot ensemble’s four award-winning master musicians bring ancient stringed instruments (zheng, pipa, ruan and sanxian) to life as they range from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) to the uber-modern. Called by the Montreal Gazette “The Zheng Master,” the group’s leader Mei Han, Ph.D., earned her doctorate in ethnomusicology from the University of British Columbia, teaches and lectures widely, and collaborates with the Grammy-winning mandolinist, John Reischman.

A wonder of theatrical full-face mask performance, exquisite visual storytelling, rich soundscapes, timeless slapstick and touching comic performance, the acclaimed mask imagineers WONDERHEADS deliver award-winning theatre at its finest. In Grim and Fischer, the Grim Reaper meets his match in Mrs. Fischer, a stubborn senior whose will to live is a force to be reckoned with. In Loon, the imagination of “a poor urban schlemiel” takes him to the moon and back. “You will laugh, you will cry, you will stand in awe.” ~ Edmonton Sun

The quartet DakhaBrakha brings it with theatrical avant-garde sensibilities, stirring vocals and harmonies, surprising acoustics, and a stage-full of instruments from every corner of the globe. Professionally trained in folklore, and singing since childhood, the vocalists/instrumentalists of DakhaBrakha have been wowing festivals worldwide. “It’s hard not to get caught up in the magic it weaves. . . utter brilliance.” ~ NPR (National Public Radio)

The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber EnsembleThursday, Oct. 22, 2015 / 7:30 p.m. Nightingale Concert Hall, Church Fine Arts Building
The British superstar chamber ensemble of London’s St. Martin in the Fields comes to Reno with nearly 60 years of exceptional musical pedigree. Drawn from the principal players of the academy’s world-famous orchestra, which was founded in 1958 by Sir Neville Mariner, the ensemble itself was created in 1967 to perform larger chamber works from quintets to octets. Nightingale Concert Hall is definitely in for a major, world-class chamber treat. “. . . the cream of the crop in the chamber music world.” ~ Cornell Daily Sun
