Rain Fall

• We observed and recorded the rain fall from the rain catcher on our plot every other week.

• The final collection of rainfall was 350 mm of water.

• We also collected the litter fall every two weeks.

• After drying and weighing this litter we found that our plot averaged 284 grams per meter squared. Pretty exciting stuff huh?

Carbon Storage!

• There is 8470.07 kg of carbon stored in the trees alone!

• We have 468.7 kg of carbon…JUST IN SNAGS DUDE!

• Total carbon stored in our plot is 10.1 metric tonnes!!!

But what does it all mean?

• There are 8.4 tonnes of stored carbon in the plot’s trees. • This is equivalent to the amount of carbon stored in 1,122

average sized humans! That many people standing shoulder to shoulder would take up an area of 684 square meters! That’s almost 70 times the area of our plot. Amazing!

ROAD TRIP!!!!

• If someone were to drive to a car that had the gas mileage of 25mpg they would have to drive 22,840 miles in order to emit the amount of carbon that’s stored in just the trees! That’s ssooooooo far! That’s almost all the way around the WORLD!

• 40 years ago, according to the theory of succession, our plot would not have any Western Hemlocks. •40 years from now, according to the theory of succession, the exsisting Western Hemlocks will grow and eventually over run the now dominant Douglas Firs.•The reason behind this hypothesis is that Western Hemlocks can grow in low light environments.
