The Sustainability Reporting Statistics

This document has been produced by GRI Report Services team. Its purpose is to provide an overview of global

trends in GRI-based sustainability reporting. These slides may be used or reproduced as long as correct

reference is given to the information source.

The tables, charts and accompanying information are based on a snapshot of GRI reports as of 19 April 2012.

All data contained herein has been drawn from GRI’s Sustainability Disclosure Database, freely accessible via

http://database.globalreporting.org.

The Database was launched in November 2011 and draws upon years of data gathering by GRI. This data is

collected via reports registered directly with GRI, through one of GRI’s Data Partners, through GRI’s Application

Level Check process, or as an outcome of internet searches. The Database has provided GRI the chance to

further expand and establish its Data Partner network, now covering 64 key reporting countries. With this

increase in scope also comes a wealth of historical reports added to the Database that GRI was previously

unaware of; therefore, the trends displayed in these slides should be viewed as dynamic, rather than static.

While GRI works to disseminate the most accurate and complete information, this cannot be guaranteed.

A GRI report is defined as any form of sustainability report that has made use of the G3 or G3.1 Guidelines and

contains a Content Index. At the start of 2011, GRI further expanded the scope of its data collection to include

other forms of sustainability and integrated reports; these are classified as Non-GRI and GRI-Referenced, the

latter referring to a report explicitly based on the GRI Guidelines but excluding a Content Index. While the

information around these two report types is not as complete as for GRI reports, GRI will continue to collect

these details in order to show trends in sustainability reporting generally.

GRI Reporting and Sustainable Development

GRI’s Sustainability Reporting Guidelines are relevant for industrialized and developing countries. Since GRI’s inception more than 10 years ago, the use of GRI’s Guidelines has grown in developing countries. The Guidelines are available in 26 languages. GRI training and coaching activities are held across the globe and have increased the Guidelines’ accessibility in developing countries. In over 30 developing countries there are companies, civil society representatives, trade unions and government staff that are and have been part of the global GRI network.

The development of the GRI Guidelines is influenced by

changes in the reporting field, such as the introduction of new

concepts, trends and tools, and requests by new players.

The next generation of GRI Guidelines – G4 – should address

requirements for sustainability data, and enable reporters to

provide relevant information to various stakeholder groups. It

should also improve on content in the current Guidelines – G3

and G3.1 – with strengthened technical definitions and

improved clarity, helping reporters, information users and

assurance providers.

Upon the publication of a new Guidelines version, GRI’s Board of Directors decides upon a suitable transition period for the move to the new version. This has historically been 2 years. The G4 Guidelines will be launched in May 2013.

Integrated and Combined Reporting GRI works towards making disclosure of

sustainability impacts a mainstream business activity. This can be done in various formats, including integrated and sustainability reporting.

Integrated reporting is a form of corporate reporting that brings together material information about an organization’s strategy, governance, performance and prospects in a way that reflects the commercial, political, social and environmental context within which it operates. It provides a clear and concise representation of how an organization creates value, now and in the future.
