GRI Content Index 2018

Our 2018 responsible business report (RBR) has been prepared in accordance with the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) Standards, Core option. The RBR accompanies our 2018 annual report (AR) and information on the responsibility section of our website at www.morgansindall.com. This GRI Content Index provides referencing to our online RBR for GRI Standards requirements together with additional detail.

The GRI Standards requirements referenced in the Content Index are based on GRI 1010: Foundation 2016. The Index sets out references relating to the 12 material topics listed on page 22 of the RBR (Our material issues). Policy references relating to Management Approach (Disclosure 103-2) can be requested from the company secretary ([email protected]). Due to our decentralised approach, the Group’s policies provide minimum standards applicable to all our divisions. The divisions will adapt policies with additional requirements that are specific to their individual businesses.

A selection of documents currently available includes:• Health and safety management

policy framework• Ethics policy, including a

section on corrupt payments and bribery

• Timber sourcing policy • Modern slavery statement• Tax strategy

Please contact the Group’s company secretarial team for copies of the above documents.

During 2019 we are reviewing and updating the following policies, which will be published on our website in due course:• Responsible business policy• Sustainable procurement policy• Environmental policy• Social value policy

1 Note the year 2016 in this content index refers to the GRI Standards document issue date, not the reporting period (see Disclosure 102-50).

Material issues and boundariesThe table below explains the boundaries for our material issues under GRI 103: Management Approach, Disclosure 103-1 Explanation of the material topic and its boundary.

Material topic 2018 Impact withinthe Group

Impact outside the Group

Level of involvement

Health and safetyHealth and safety risks to suppliers and subcontractors working on our sites, as well as the public. Risks can be specifically associated with sites under construction and completed buildings or infrastructure.

• The Group is responsible for setting the health and safety standards and requirements for all of our project sites and offices. Anyone attending a site or office is required to comply with these standards and requirements.

• We seek to influence improvements in health and safety performance outside of the Group’s activities through engagement with industry bodies, the HSE (Health and Safety Executive), suppliers and customers.

Training and developing employees

Training provided to subcontractors working on our sites (positive impact: improvement in compliance, efficiency and quality).

• Our involvement is through the offer of training and career development to all employees (for example technical skills, apprenticeships and professional qualifications support).

• We also require all subcontractors and visitors attending our sites to undergo formal induction training prior to entry.• Subcontractors and employees working on our projects must complete their CSCS training prior to site entry, and must have

relevant training for the job on site.• We influence those in our supply chain to attend partnership events and complete relevant modules in the Supply Chain

Sustainability School.

Employee engagement • We aim to achieve high quality engagement by undertaking regular employee satisfaction surveys to seek feedback. The results of these surveys are shared with employees including any action plans to address issues raised. In addition, each of our divisions holds an annual employee conference which advises employees of business developments and allows them to engage with managers and colleagues in a less formal setting. All employees are encouraged to continually challenge the Group’s approach to make further improvements where possible.

Diversity and inclusion • We operate an inclusive, empowered culture, underpinned by respect. We aim to provide our employees with opportunities to develop by allowing them to balance a successful career with commitments outside work.

• We strongly believe that a diverse and inclusive workforce is critical for the long-term success of the Group.

Material topic 2018 Impact within the Group

Impact outside the Group

Level of involvement

Climate changeEnergy used by subcontractors working on our sites. Embodied energy in products and energy performance of buildings/infrastructure in use.

• Our involvement in the impacts is influenced by policy expectations on carbon reduction, for example company car fuel efficiency.

• We aim to influence risks/impacts outside our operations through supplier engagement, product design and customer engagement.

Waste management Waste produced by subcontractors working on our sites, embodied waste and waste from buildings/infrastructure in use.

• We aim to minimise waste across all operations.• Waste recycling procedures are in place in all offices and sites.• We aim to influence the level of waste arising on our projects through engagement with clients and suppliers.

Supplier engagement • All our divisions operate preferred supplier schemes.• We aim to cultivate long-lasting relationships with suppliers and to treat them with respect.• We adhere to the Prompt Payment Code.

Community engagement

• We work with communities to mitigate the impact of our activities.• Where possible we seek to leave a positive legacy in the communities in which we operate by providing work for local

residents, improving community facilities and using local small- to medium-sized businesses (SMEs).• We engage with local schools and colleges to explain the diverse range of careers within the industry and the Group.• Where possible we offer work placements, pre-employment training, apprenticeships and graduate sponsorship programmes.

Corporate Governance Good governance and legal compliance of our suppliers and of subcontractors working on our sites.

• Through good corporate governance, we aim to ensure that we comply with all applicable laws and registrations.• We aim to ensure all employees comply with relevant legislation and regulations and operate an independent service

for employees and other individuals working on our projects to raise concerns confidentially about our operations.• We undertake assessments of all suppliers and subcontractors prior to engaging them to undertake work; part of this

process includes seeking confirmation that they have complied with all relevant legislation and regulation.• The Board is responsible for setting and overseeing the successful implementation of the Group’s strategy to deliver

long-term value for all stakeholders. The Board regularly monitors the Group’s performance against its strategic objectives.• We aim to manage and mitigate the risks affecting quality and delivery and cultivate long-lasting relationships and

partnerships with our clients.

No data available on Total number of employees by employment type (full-time and part-time), by gender (GRI 102-8c).
