On1stAprilthisyear,Greywallscelebratesits65thanniversaryasa
hotel.Afewmonthslater,inJuly,itwillplayitspartinhostingTheOpen
ChampionshipwhenitreturnstoMuirfieldGolfCourseinGullane.As
manyofyouknow,MuirfieldsitsoutfronttothenorthsideofGreywalls,
withinauniquepanoramathatstretchesacrosstheworldfamouslinks,
overtheRiverForthandbeyondtothePapsofFifeandupthenorth
eastcoastline.
Someeighteenmonthsagoweputtogetherateamofspeciallyinvited
artists,allwellestablishedintheirownspecialistgenre,toproduce
paintingsofthemanyaspectsthatcombinetomakeGreywallsthe
uniqueandveryspecialplacethatitis.Thesepagesrepresentthe
culminationoftheirmanymonthsofwork.
Theirsubjectshavebeenwideranging–fromtheimportantand
distinctcharacteroftheLutyensarchitecturetotheextensivesixacres
ofwonderfulJekyllattributedgardens;fromtheperiodyethomely
charmoftheinteriorstothemagnificentvistasoverthegolfcourse;
fromportraitsofthegolfinglegendswhohavestayedthere(andwon
theOpen’sClaretJugintheprocess)tostilllifeworksoftheexquisite
signaturedishesofAlbertRoux(theinternationallyacclaimedchefand
acknowledgeddoyenoffinedining);fromthegloryofthebotanyin
thegardenstotheadventuresofthetwoGreywallstortoises;allofthis,
andmore,hasbeenuniquelycapturedinartformcomingtogetheras
aone-off,joyousexhibitionofsome60paintingsundertheveryapttitle
“Greywalls–AWorkofArt”.
Accompanyingtheexhibitionisthelaunchofanew,highquality,coffee-
tablebook,entitled“Greywalls–AHiddenGem”.
WithforewordwrittenbyRonnieCorbettCBE,thebookextendsto240
pages,coversthefactualhistoryandrecountsallthatGreywallshas
experiencedduringits112yearsexistence(65yearsasahotel).Each
chapterhighlightsindetailadifferentaspect–a“gem”–andprovides
afascinatingaccountofbothpastandpresentthatcombinetoshow
Greywallsasthetreasurethatitis.
Publishedasalimitededitionhardback,itcomesbeautifullyillustrated
bothbyphotographsandselectedpaintingsfromtheartistsinvolvedin
thisexhibition.Accordingly,thosepaintingsintheexhibitionthatarealso
featuredinthebookcanbeconsideredashavingaddedvaluefroma
provenancepointofview.
Greywallsisunlikelytoberecordedinthiswayatanytimeinthefuture,
andthisbeingthe65thanniversaryofthehotel,theexhibitionservesto
recognisethismilestonemomentasaspecialoccasion.
Furthermore,asallpaintingsareforsale,theexhibitionrepresents
auniquecollectionofworksonGreywallsthatwillonlybeshown
togetherthisonce.

nickFaldoin1987–howeverhereturnedtoMuirfield
fiveyearslatertowinagain,anddidstayatGreywalls
onthatoccasion,andsocontinuityofMuirfieldOpen
Championscanbeclaimed.
AineDivinehasproducedaseriesofwatercolour
paintingsusingreferencematerialtruetothetimesof
theseOpenChampionshipwins,andsothepaintings
thatfollowrepresentaunique,historicallycorrect,
collectionofworks.

WithinRoyMcGregor’sbook“Greywalls–AHiddenGem”,achapter
isdedicatedtoachildren’sstoryinspiredbythetwotortoiseswhohave
livedatGreywallseversincetheywerepresentedtothecurrentowner
whenhewasayoungboy.
GullanePrimarypupilswereinvolvedincreatingabedtimestoryabout
anadventureforthetortoises,namedEdwinandGertie,afterEdwin
LutyensandGertrudeJekyll.Thepupilsalsoproducedpaintingsthat
havebeenusedtoillustratethestoryinthebook.Thestorynotonly
involvedthetortoisesbutincludedotheranimalsandwildlifefound
withintheGreywallsgardens.
MasterwoodcarverMichaelMcManushasproducedanumberof
sculptedwoodcarvingsoftheseanimals,andtheywillalsofeature
withinthisexhibition.

Josephhasbuiltastrongreputationasawatercolouristand
overtheyearshasexhibitedregularlybothinScotlandandin
London.Earlierthisyear(2012),hecompletedamajorseriesof
paintingsforanewsoloexhibitionheldinTheMallGalleriesin
Londonentitled“TheEnduringMiddleEast”andfeaturingover
100paintingsinoilsandwatercolourcoveringEgypt,Israel,
Palestine,Jordan,LebanonandSyria.Theshowaccompanieda
newbooklaunchthatdocumentedthevoyageofdiscoveryby
the19thcenturyOrientalistDavidRoberts.
HenowlivesandpaintsintheScottishBordersathisstudio
situatednearPeebles.

JameswasbornandbroughtupinAyrandhaslivedthereallhislife.Hestudied
DrawingandPaintingatGlasgowSchoolofArtgraduatingin1960andthen
continuedhisstudiesgainingaPostDiplomainPrintmakingthefollowingyear.
Hetaughtartinschoolsformanyyearsandmanyofhispupilshavegoneonto
becomeprofessionalartistsintheirownright.Hehasexhibitedextensivelyover
theyearsandisapastwinneroftheprestigiousLaingLandscapeCompetition
andalsoTheScotsmanArtCompetition.
Today,Jamesisacknowledgedfarandwideforhiscolourfulinterpretationof
theScottishlandscapeandofcoastalfishingvillages.Hisworkfeaturesinmany
importantcollectionsincludingthoseintheHouseofLords,GlasgowUniversity
andTheMaclaurinGalleryintheWestofScotland.
JohnwasbornandraisedinGlasgowandstudiedartatGlasgowSchoolofArt
between1972–76.
AfterwinningatravellingscholarshiptoAmericaandCanadahelivedinboth
ItalyandFranceforaperiod,paintingandstudyingthelandscapesandcities
aroundTuscany,UmbriaandChianti.HealsospenttimeinPariswherehefirst
beganpaintingtheatmosphericcaféscenesofthatrichartisticcity.
Johnhasexhibitedextensivelyover30years,inLondon,Germany,Irelandand
intheUSAaswellasinanumberofselectgalleriesintheUK.Hehasworkin
manycollectionsbothcorporateandprivate,andhasexhibitedsuccessfullyatthe
RoyalScottishAcademy.

Sheeventuallylefttheworldofdesigntobecomeafull-timeartist
painter.
ItisforherScottishlandscapepaintingsthatsheisbestknown.Helen
wasawardedThePaisleyArtInstituteDiplomain2000andbecame
electedPresidentoftheInstitutethefollowingyear.ShewontheEast
LintonAwardandwascommendedintheSoroptomistsFineArtAwards
in1992.
HelenisalsoalaymemberofTheGlasgowInstituteandanArtist
MemberofTheGlasgowSocietyofWomenArtists(GSWA).Overthe
yearsshehasexhibitedextensivelyingalleriesthroughouttheUKand
inLondon.ShehasalsoparticipatedinexhibitionsinFrance,Russiaand
HongKong.
Herworkisinmanyprivatecollectionsthroughouttheworldandwithin
corporatecollectionsincludingRobertFlemingHoldings,DunedinFund
ManagersandLloydsBankingGroup.

ChristinestudiedartatGraysSchoolofArtinAberdeen,graduating
in1963,andbeganexhibitingprofessionallyalmostimmediately.She
wontheprestigiousDavidMurrayScholarshipforLandscapepainting
in1966andthentheHospitalfieldScholarshipin1968.
Shecutbackonherexhibitingworkintheearly70’stostartafamily
anditwasn’tuntiltheearly1980’sthatshereturnedtopaintingfulltime,
returninginamajorwaytotheexhibitingworldtomuchcriticalacclaim.
In1993shewaselectedtomembershipoftheRoyalScottishSociety
ofPaintersinWatercolour(RSW)andtwoyearslatershewonthe
TeachersWhiskyTravelScholarshipattheRoyalGlasgowInstitute
oftheFineArts(RGI).ThisallowedhertotraveltonorthAfricaand
theexperiencegreatlyenhancedherpaintingstyleandherviewof
interpretation.Herworkisinthepermanentcollectionsofanumberof
CorporationsaswellasintheRoyalScottishAcademy.
In1999shewaselectedasaMemberoftheRGI.
Christinecontinuestoexhibitextensivelyincarefullyselectedgalleries
throughouttheUKandinLondon.
MaggieVancewasbornandbroughtupintheEastEndofGlasgow.
ShestudieddrawingandpaintingatGlasgowSchoolofArtand
graduatedintheearly60’s.ShethenwentontoTeacherTrainingat
JordanhillCollegeandbeganherteachingcareerwithinherhome
territoryofGlasgow’sEastEnd.
TeachingadolescentsartinthatpartofGlasgowgaveherastrong
affectionforthehumourandlifestyleofthoseparts.
MaggiemovedtoEdinburghandherteachingofartmovedonto
includeadulteducationaswellasprimaryschoolchildren–allwhile
raisingherownfamily.
ShetravelledextensivelythroughoutEurope,recordingassource
materialencounterswithpeopleandplaces,particularlywithaneyefor
thehumorous,andthisreflectedthedirectionshetookwithherartistic
output.
Overtheyearsshehasexhibitedwidelywithworknowheldin
numerousprivateandcorporatecollections.Herreputationiswell
establishedinthefieldofwatercolourworks,principallyofinterior
scenes,alwayswiththehumanaspectinvolved,bringinglifeand
personalitytohersubjectsinanovelanduniqueway.Maggieisan
artistmemberofGlasgowWomenArtists.

Ainecompletedanumberofimportantcommissionswhilestill
residentinIreland,includingaportraitofthepianist‘CharlesLynch’,the
highcourtjudge’HarveyKenny’,andapaintingoftheIrishAttorney
General’sfatherpresentedtohimonhisinauguration.
AselectionofAine’sportraitswasshortlistedforexhibitioninthe
‘IrishnationalPortraitAwards’threeyearsinarow,andheroilportrait
ofJ.Russellwasanawardwinnerinthethirdyear.
SincemovingtoScotlandin1996shehasexhibitedwidelyandhas
undertakenmanyprestigiousportraitcommissions.In2004,theSociety
ofMiniaturePaintersattheMallGalleriesinLondonselectedthreeof
herportraitsforexhibition.

MichaelMcManuswasbornandbroughtupinDalkeithandhaslived
andworkedintheLothiansallhislife.
Heleftschooltoimmediatelybeginworkinacraftthathadbeenhis
callingfromaveryearlyage,simplylovingthecreativesatisfactionthat
hederivedfromcarving,shapingandfinishingnaturalwood.Hehas
beenaprofessionalwoodcarversculptorforover20years.
Michaelhasexhibitedhiscreationswidely,mainlyinhisnative
Scotland,butalsoatShowsinEnglandwherehehasparticipated
inGardenExhibitionsandspecificDesignFairs.Hehasexhibitedat
theRSAandlatterlyattheVASexhibitioninTheMound,Edinburgh.
HealsoparticipatedinadocumentaryTVprogrammein2010and
featuredinnewsnightScotland.
Sourcinghiswoodmostlylocally,Michaelhastakenhiswoodcarving
beyondstandardcraftsmanshipandfocusesonsculptinghispieces
totheextentthattheyaretrulyconsideredworksofart.Hisrangeof
productiswideandcoverslargeoutdoorsculpturesthatfeaturein
landscapegardensaswellassmallermoreintricateornamentalworks
suitableforindoordisplay.

Located alongside and overlooking Muirfield Golf Course, home of
whatiswidelyacceptedastheoldestgolfclubintheworld,wherethevery
rulesofgolfwerewrittenin1744,manyoftheworld’sgreatestgolfershave
gracedtheGreywallsthresholdanddiscoveredits“lucky”charm.

ten established Scottish contemporary artists who spent eighteen months
