This is in accordance with laws protecting workers in sectors where they were exposed to po- tential exploitation, where worker organisations and trade unions were absent, and workers were not covered by regulating mecha- nisms. In Umvoti, which is classified as Area B, the minimum wage for do- mestic workers who work more than 27 hours per week is as fol- lows: Hourly rate: R9.30 (was R8.30) Weekly rate on a 45 hour week: R418.323 (was R373.50) Monthly rate on a 45 hour week: R1812.57 (was R1618.37) Minimum wages for domestic workers who work 27 hours or less: Hourly:R10.98 (was R9.80) Weekly:R296.35 (was R264.60) Monthly:R1284.09 (was R1146.51) In major metropolitan areas, Area A, domestic workers work- ing 27 hours or more, have an hourly rate of R10.95. The weekly rate is R476.68 and the monthly rate is R2065.47. For those who work 27 hours or less the hourly rate is R12.40, weekly R334.74 and monthly R1450.33. On Saturday 22 November, Buffa- lo Protection Services guards were on patrol on Eyethu farm in the Kranskop area when they came across the four and the dead ani- mal. The four were arrested and taken to Kran- skop Police Station. The youngsters were later released by Kranskop Police into the custody of their parents. Poachers caught red-handed AT the end of October, Lake Merthley was 55% full and with comparatively little rainfall in its catchment area last month, the level has continued to drop. There seems to be no alarms bells ringing with the municipali- ty, as Greytonians could face the possibility of water restrictions soon. If this does not happen, there is a very real possibility of a dras- tic shortage of water for resi- dents. Interestingly at this exact time in 1991, the council was so con- cerned as the level of Lake Merth- ley dropped and dropped to 65% that it imposed water restric- tions. In January 1992 (level 60% and 1,5m below the wall), council said it had no option but to impose some measures in the hope that these would reduce water con- sumption. These included not us- ing hosepipes, sprinklers, filling pools etc. But the question of possible problems with the water supply was not even raised at last Fri- day’s council meeting - but it was agreed that a second double cab vehicle be purchased. In an interview with the action to avert a serious shortage of water - however he had no re- sponse whatsoever. Several municipalities in KZN have recently imposed water re- strictions as the much vaunted Spring rains failed to arrive. Old timers claim that the strange weather Greytown has been experiencing recently is typ- ically drought weather. It is an extremely worrying sit- uation. Apart from urging all wa- ter consumers not to waste water, an urgent appeal is made to coun- cil and the municipality to take immediate action to prevent a major disaster as the level of the Lake drops. A couple of days of good steady rain would remedy the dire situa- tions...so here’s hoping. But in the meantime, it is essential that the usage of water be curbed - offi- cially and by the consumers themselves. This dramatic photograph, taken ten days ago, clearly shows the low level of Lake Merthley. The gap from the top of the wall to the water is over two meters. IT is the 16 days of activismagainst violence and abuse towomen and children and in thisregard, the Department of Jus-ticeandConstitutionalDevelop-ment has issued an explanationon “What is Ukuthwala?”

Ukuthwala isa formofabduc-tion or kidnap of a girl or youngwomanbyamanandhis friendswith the intention of compellingher family to agree to a mar-riage. But currently, it is beingpractised indifferentways fromthe original tradition as it ismarked - in many instances byviolence and rape.

Obviously the impact on ayoung girl has far reaching, se-rious and negative implicationsfrom health, sexual, childbear-ing, educational, gender ine-quality and a stolen childhood.

However there is protectionfrom the law for victims of Uku-thwala as follows:

*Customary Marriage Act:age consent for marriage is 18years.

*Preventionandcombatingoftrafficking in persons to makeit punishable to conclude aforced marriage with anotherperson.

*In terms of Criminal law(sexual offences and related at-ters)amendmentact32of2007:

Rape: If a man has sex witha girl under the age of 12, hecommits rape, with a girl be-tween 12 and 16 he is guilty ofstatutory rape.

The parents or caregiverwhoparticipate in or allow an uku-thwala intombi or do not reportto the police when their child isabducted, in terms of ukuthwa-la, may be charged with thecharge of sexual exploitation. Aparent therefore must not ac-cept lobolo in exchange for thegirl being abducted.

What is Ukuthwala?

GREYTOWN couple Sunny andRamdulary Inderfall celebrated 53years of marriage on 16 July - bothare 73 years old.

They attribute their happy mar-riage to good communication. Sun-ny worked as a forestry managerinWartburg for over35yearswhileRamdulary was the homemakerandtookcareof their threechildren- two daughters, Kalawathie Balk-rishna,PremillaPotgieterand theirson, Ishwarlall. They have fivegrandchildren and a great grand-daughter. Their marriage was anarranged one but Sonny says “I willnever forget thedaymyeyescaughtsight of her, my wife-to-be. I knewthere and then that shewas the one

for me.”Now in their retirement years,

the couple live with their eldestdaughter Kalawathie in Greytownandspendtheirdayschatting,play-ing with grandchildren, and grow-ing vegetables for the family table.

Three years ago the couple cele-brated their Golden wedding witha party - Ramdulary said “everyyear we buy a cake and ring on theday and its just a family day.”Whenasked why they thought today’s di-vorce rate is so high their responsewas “couples are doing their ownthing - they are not faithful to eachother.Whenwe gotmarried,we setout our rules for life.”Congratulations to the couple andbestwishes formanymoreyears to-gether.

53 years of happytogetherness

EVERYTHING has a beginning and an end. The timeto end this chapter in my life and start a new one hascome. We lead a life that resembles a relay race - oneperson runs to a certain point and then hands overthe baton to another to carry on. After 33 years andfive months in the SAPS, the time has come for me tosay goodbye to firstly all Greytonians, Ematimatolo,Kranskop, Msinga, Muden, and the Rietvlei communi-ties, who have supported me during my reign as theCluster Commander of Greytown in my constitutionalmandate to serve and protect the community. And toall other people who have directly or indirectly mademy career a pleasant one.

Leaving the SAPS behind is not easy. Being part of

the organ of the state charged with the responsibilityof ensuring safety of all has enriched my life and al-lowed me to grow and develop in a multitude of ways, whilst at the same time building a huge array of happyand lasting memories.

It has always been, and will always be a passion toseeasafeandsecureenvironment forall people. I havedecided to exit the service in order to venture into newopportunities. It is my humble request, hope and trustfor the community to give their undivided support tothe new would-be-appointed cluster commander andto all ourmen andwomen in bluewithin the GreytownCluster.

It has always been my firm belief that if you walkthe way guided by humans, you will find a hopeless

The traditional color associat-edwithTurquoise is skyblueandwas strongly favored as a popu-lar gem in Victorian jewellery.

The meaning of coloursthrough the ages representedmany aspects of life. Social, reli-gious, biblical and Christiansymbolism were all reflected inthe color turquoise. The symbol-icmeaning of the color turquoiserepresents the life cycle of birth, oldageanddeath, due to itsabili-ty to change color with ageing.

SHEILACHANDA24/12/2013

1 YearThe moment that you died my heart was torn in two.

One side filled with heartache, the other died with you.

I often lie awake at night when the world is fast asleepand take a walk down memory lane with tears upon my

cheeks.

Remembering you is easy. I do it everyday, but missingyou is a heartache that never goes away.

I hold you tightly within my heart and there you willremain until the joyous day arrives, that we will meet

again.

Remembered by Sharm, Simi, Theajal-Ria Singh, your sisters and extended family.

IN the Middle Ages, it was for-bidden to grow rocket in mon-asteries as it was said to be anaphrodisiac. Rocket is strongertasting than most leafy greensand adds a peppery bite to sal-ads, having been a popular sal-ad green and seasoning leaf insouthern Europe for centuries.

Best harvested when youngand before it flowers, largermature leaves and those grownin the hot summer months arestronger tasting, almost bitter, and must be used in saladssoups and sauces with discre-tion.

It acts as a tonic to tomatoes, raspberriesandonionsandwillenhance their flavour.

Rocket is indigenous to Isra-el, North Africa and the Medi-terranean, where it has beengrown as an edible herb sinceRoman times, with seeds hav-ing been found in tombs andvaults.

According to ancient tradi-tions, eating rocket wouldbring you good luck, and the oilextracted from the seeds wasconsidered to be an aphrodisi-ac and mentioned by variousclassical authors like Virgil, with some writers assertingthat, for this reason, it was for-bidden to grow rocket in mon-asteries during the MiddleAges.

A sweet, peppery digestivealcohol called rucolino is madefrom rocket on the island of Is-chia This liqueur is a local spe-cialty enjoyed in small quanti-ties, Taramira oil or Jamba oil, pressed from the seeds of rock-et, is used for massage and tosoothe the skin, and the ‘seedcake’ which is a by-product ofthe oil production, is used asanimal feed.

Rocket is rich in vitamin Cand potassium. In the past, itwas used to treat coughs andcolds, and is still usedas apoul-tice for bruises and sprains andto soothe spotty, inflamed skinand insect bites and stings.

Crushed seeds are spread ontop of a warmed flannel ban-dage and held against the skin, without allowing the seeds totouch the skin.

Crushedpetals aremade intoa paste to treat skin blemishes.Rocket juice is alsousedasa fa-cial cleanser for oily skins, androcket seeds, pounded andmixed with Olive Oil, is used totreat brokennails and calluses.

Rocket tea is an invigoratingtonic taken when tired or anx-ious. To make the tea, use 1/4cup rocket and 1/4 cup parsley, pouroveronecupboilingwaterand steep for five minutes be-forestraining; sprinklewith1/4teaspoon cayenne pepper anddrink slowly.

IT is that time of year when cer-tain, meaningful traditions popup on the calendar. One such isthe ABC Schützenfest, where theGrade one’s of 2014 welcome thejust-graduated Grade R’s of 2014to ‘big school’.The Grade one’s reenacted thetale of the three little pigs - ablyscripted by our ownMrs Royden-Turner - before each new Gradeone was called up to receive asmall Grade one welcome pack.We look forward to continuingour good relationship with thekindergarten parents in the pri-

mary school. As part of the tradition, Juan

van Rooyen, who started hisschool career at Hermannsburgand has just finished Grade 12thisyear, receivedaZuckertüte (atraditional paper cone of sweetsand goodies).A special touch was when Pastorand Mrs Brand also got theirZuckertüten for being at Her-mannsburg for 12 years.

The weekend was rounded offby a special Advent service onSunday, where the school choirsang beautifully to a full congre-

gation, and the many visitors, aswe remember another reasonwhy this time of year is special tosomany of us. This week, the pri-mary school and high schoolawardswereheldonMondayandTuesday, andwewill be reportingmore on those next week.

We wish all our scholars andtheir parents, as well as theteachers, a blessed holiday filledwith good times with family andfriends. Safe travels until we seeeach other again in the new year.
