France, a new climate for business, a tax heaven for R&D

• The best research tax credit in Europe (CIR) when partnering with public R&D center• a corporate tax incentive based on R&D expenditure incurred by any company located in France, regardless of sector or size:

• 100% yearly R&D expenses the first year, up to €100 million (and 5% for expenses above this level), • 80% the second year • 60% subsequent years

•Example :•US company – R&D project with public research center of $10M •Net Credit for US company of $7.5 M or 75% of project value

• Arriving: 1960, a subsidiary dedicated to the European, Middle East and African markets. The reasons of the seting-up:

• Caterpillar acquires Simatra (tractors manufacturer)


• Asset: water abundance to cool the components

• 1963: building a new plant

• 1966: the first lift truck of the group comes out from the Grenoble plant

•1988 – 1991: more than 1MdF are invested to modernize the site

• 1999: first Caterpillar price for the environment won by Grenoble and Echirolles plants

• 2007: first WES(Work Environment Simulation) workshop in Europe, after the US

• 1953: BD get in touch with the company AMI, a subsidiary of Minitube (steel tube for hypodermic needle manufacturer)

• 1955: BD take over AMI by 70%

• 1958: BD acquires AMI and establishes BD France

• 1965: the challenge of divide by 8 the cost of the steel tube for hypodermics needles is won

• 1970: seting up of the European headquarters

• 2006 et 2007: +10% jobs each years and a building expansion

• Today: BD France headquarters, one worldwide business segment and two European business segments. BD employs around 1,500 people. €10 M investments in 2008.

• 2002: Crolles2 alliance with Motorola (now Freescale), Philips (now NXP Semiconductor) and STMicroelectronics – $3,4b invested between 2002 and 2007

• 2007: alliance with IBM

• 2008: Nicolas Sarkosy gives notice of a 2,85% investment in the capital of the company to maintain the parity France/Italy

• Today: STMicroelectronics employs more than 6,500 people and is the leader in the Nano2012 program
