After graduating from the Khar'kov TechnologicalInstitute he worked from 1928 to 1960 in the Ukrain- ian Scientific Research Institute of Refractories (formerly the Institute of the Silicate Industry) where he was head of several laboratories in turn. Since 1944 G. V. Kukolevhas been in charge of the faculty of the technologyof ceramics, refrac- tories, glass and lacquers at the V. I. Lenin Polytechnical Institute in Khar'kov. Professor G. V. Kukolevis the author of the textbook "Chemistry of Silicon and the Physical[ Chemis- try of Silicates" published in 1951, and since 1966 has been co-author of several editions of the textbook "Technology of Ceramics and Refractories," the problems bookfor the course "Chemistry of Silicon and the Physical Chemistry of Silicates." Professor G. V. Kukolevhas over 400 published works and numerous inventions to his credit. Dur- ing the period from 1944 to 1973 he coached 47 candidates of technical sciences three of which later suc- cessfully defended their doctorate theses. During the Great Patriotic War G. V. Kukolev carried out important work on increasing the produc- tion capacity and improving the quality of refractories at plants in the Ural and in Siberia. The work carried out by G. V. Kukolevcovers numerous theoretical and technological problems, among them the theory and mechanism of the sintering of refractories, ceramics and binders, the appli- cation and further development of the principles of physico-chemieal mechanics of dispersed systems in the technologyof ceramics and refractories, the mechanism of action of surface-active substances, appli- cation of the science of phase equilibria in refractories technology, and the scientific fundamentals of the production of refractories and super-duty refractories with controlled structure and special properties. Among his important technological research is the work he carried out in the field of dolomite and magnesia-dolomite refractories (powders and products), high-density chamotte refractories and products for continuous steelcasting, thermostable and high-density magnesia products, etc. Translated from Ogneupory, No. 4, p. 61, April, 1974. 9 1975 Plenum Publishing Corporation, 227 West 17th Street, New York, N. After graduating from the Khar'kov Technological Institute he worked from 1928 to 1960 in the Ukrain- ian Scientific Research Institute of Refractories (formerly the Institute of the Silicate Industry) where he was head of several laboratories in turn.

Since 1944 G. V. Kukolev has been in charge of the faculty of the technology of ceramics, refrac- tories, glass and lacquers at the V. I. Lenin Polytechnical Institute in Khar'kov.

Professor G. V. Kukolev is the author of the textbook "Chemistry of Silicon and the Physical[ Chemis- try of Silicates" published in 1951, and since 1966 has been co-author of several editions of the textbook "Technology of Ceramics and Refractories," the problems book for the course "Chemistry of Silicon and the Physical Chemistry of Silicates."

Professor G. V. Kukolev has over 400 published works and numerous inventions to his credit.

V. Kukolev covers numerous theoretical and technological problems, among them the theory and mechanism of the sintering of refractories, ceramics and binders, the appli- cation and further development of the principles of physico-chemieal mechanics of dispersed systems in the technology of ceramics and refractories, the mechanism of action of surface-active substances, appli- cation of the science of phase equilibria in ref rac tor ies technology, and the scientific fundamentals of the production of refractor ies and super-duty refractor ies with controlled structure and special propert ies .

Among his important technological research is the work he carr ied out in the field of dolomite and magnesia-dolomite ref rac tor ies (powders and products), high-density chamotte ref rac tor ies and products for continuous steelcasting, thermostable and high-density magnesia products, etc.
