CLUB HIKING GUIDELINES:

● All hikers must RSVP to hike. GNHA Meetup message app is the preferred method over phone or

email to hike leaders.

● Each hiker is responsible for his or her own safety; refer to Safety & Liability Policy

● Always wear suitable clothing, sturdy footwear (boots or hiking boots), bring plenty of water and a

snack or lunch, bring rain gear when inclement weather is predicted; refer to hikers guide

● Do not attempt any hike beyond your ability; if there is any question about the trail, rating of the

hike or conditions, contact the leader ● Arrive 15 minutes early to form carpools. Offer driver gas money as noted in the hike description

(“Drive RT” cost is $0.08 per mile). Hikes leave promptly at the published START TIME ● Sign in before the hike with an emergency phone number. ● Notify leader of any special conditions you may have (e.g. injury, illness, etc.) ● Do not hike ahead of leader without specific permission. ● Consider wearing blaze orange clothing or hat during hunting season. ● Minors must be accompanied by their parent. ● Sorry, no pets on hikes.

HIKERS WILL MEET AND FORM CARPOOLS AT UNIVERSITY SQUARE SHOPPING

CENTER unless otherwise noted. This is the Publix shopping center on the west side of Poinsett

Highway, two miles north of Cherrydale Shopping Center and one mile south of Furman University. We

form carpools next to McDonalds Restaurant. Many hike descriptions will instruct carpoolers to meet

their hike leader at an alternate site or trail head. Return times are approximate.

ANNUAL DUES ARE $5.00 PAYABLE JANUARY 1. Dues are not pro-rated; but, if you join after

October 1st, your payment will cover the following year. Payment on-line through the Club Website /

PayPal is preferred. Please consider paying for more than one year to reduce transaction costs.

NEW YEAR'S DAY - HOBO STEW SOCIAL & HIKES - PARIS MTN

Join your fellow hikers for a morning of hiking followed by a lunch social starting around 12:00 PM at

Shelter 5 at Paris Mountain. If you don't want to hike, then come and eat.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING CHANGE TO THIS ANNUAL EVENT:

The Paris Mountain State Park Manager has requested GNHA members carpool into the park on this date

because of capacity limitations with other events happening that day. This is a condition of our club's use

of Shelters 5 and 6 this New Year's Day. Therefore, hike leaders will form carpools in the field behind

Greenville Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (GUUF), 1135 State Park Road, Greenville, SC 29609 and

depart at the hike times shown below.

Members coming for the meal and social only will meet at GUUF and form carpools among themselves

during the 10:00 to 11:15 time frame and travel to Shelter 5. Bud Slaker's group will handle carpooling

for this.

State Park Admission fee required. Consider carpooling with drivers with an annual State Park pass.

All hikes will start from Sulphur Springs Shelter #5.

Hikers will return to Shelter 5 around 12:00 noon for Hobo Stew. Please bring a can of VEGETABLES

for the stew and an extra non-perishable food item for a food pantry. This is a vegetarian stew. Some

hikers may wish to bring a dessert or cornbread to share. Don't forget to bring your own spoon. Cans will

be used as bowls. Those who can, please bring a few logs for firewood. Tom Parlier, the Iron Chef of

Rosman will be in charge of the stew.

Saturday, January 06, 2018 (VVS) PINNACLE MTN - TABLE ROCK LOOP Start Time: 8:00 AM From Table Rock Nature Center we hike the Pinnacle Mtn Trail to Bald Rock Overlook up to Pinnacle

Mountain, along the ridge to Table Rock overlook for lunch, and back to the Nature Center. M: 11 EG: 3900, R: VVS Drive RT: 50 miles, $4.00, L: 15 Leader: Lance Renault, 864.244.1021 (VVS) CASE CAMP - SENIARD RIDGE FIGURE 8 Start Time: 8:00 AM Starting at the Case Camp trailhead on FS 475B we will go west on the Case Camp Trail to the Blue

Ridge Parkway. We will cross the Parkway and take the MST, Pisgah Ridge trail, and a connector trail

south to the Graveyard Fields parking area and on to Second Falls. We will return on the Blue Ridge

Parkway (which will be closed to traffic) and the Seniard Ridge Trail. There should be tremendous ice

cycles on the granite walls along the Parkway and possibly snow on the ground. Also, there should be

excellent mountain views from the Parkway and close up views of Looking Glass Rock from the Seniard

Ridge Trail. There are also a couple of waterfalls on our return. Second Meeting Place: Bi-Lo parking lot above the Pizza Hut in Pisgah Forest at the intersection of US

Sunday, January 07, 2018 (MS) BLUE RIDGE RAILWAY TRAIL - ISAQUEENA FALLS AND STUMPHOUSE TUNNEL Start Time: 12:00 PM, Return Time: 6:00 PM Trail begins at the Stumphouse Tunnel parking area near Isaqueena Falls. Several ups and downs. The

SW Saddle tunnel, and Middle Tunnel are interesting points along the way, with good vista

openings. Isaqueena Falls and Stumphouse Tunnel are nice treasures at the end of the hike. Bring

Saturday, January 13, 2018 (VVS) PISGAH - PRESSLEY COVE - BLACK MTN - CLUB GAP Start Time: 8:00 AM A very strenuous hike with lots of challenging elevation changes. We will begin at Pressley Cove Trail

which is a steep trail, gaining almost 900 feet in elevation over the course of just over one mile. It winds

through a beautiful cove of laurel, hemlock, and beech trees. We will then take the Black Mountain Trail

over Black Mountain and Clawhammer Mountain. Soon after we will come across the Buckhorn Gap

shelter where we will have lunch. We will then continue over Rich Mountain to Buckwheat Trail. We

will continue over Buckwheat Knob to Bennett Gap Trail and over Coontree Mountain back to the

trailhead. Along the entire route, one is treated to gorgeous views of the cove, and as you get higher,

ridges off to the west. This will be a moderate to fast paced hike with 1850 feet of elevation within the

first 3 miles. We will cross 4 mountains and 1 knob with several amazing views along the way. Hike along the Davidson River, view two waterfalls and enjoy a variety of trail surfaces and winter forest

scenery. Expect two long ascents, some narrow side slopes and rooty sections. Moderate pace. Optional

(S) PISGAH - LOOKING GLASS Start Time: 10:00 AM This is an in & out hike from (FS 475) Fish Hatchery Rd. The hike has a steady climb with frequent

switchbacks to the top of Looking Glass Rock. Lunch is at the summit rock face with beautiful views of

Loop, Camp Summit Rd, Fawn Lake and Mine Mountain trails to parking. A good afternoon workout

require elevation gain of about 800 feet for one and 900 for the other. We will hike up Rock Top and part

of the Tower Trail to get to the Crowder Mountain summit for Big View#1. We will continue up the Turnback Trail to Pinnacle Mountain for Big View #2. The views are incredible

the loop that begins and ends on Persimmon Ridge Road, and follows Wattacoo Creek and lake, including

Panthertown. A rugged winter hike in the Panthertown forest along West Fork Way Trail, with stops at

Pacolet River. This in-and-out hike passes through various forest habitats with large boulders, outcrops

Saturday, February 10, 2018 (VS) PETROGLYPHS AND DRAWBAR CLIFFS FROM 'THE ROCK' SUBDIVISION Start Time: 8:30 AM An in-and-out hike. Starting at 'The Rock' Subdivision, we will hike westerly on the Palmetto Trail, then

ascend a gravel road past the Petroglyphs site, continue to the Foothills Trail to great views from Drawbar

Cliffs, descend to the base of Drawbar Cliffs. We will choose one of these spots for lunch. We will

reverse our route, stopping to visit the Petroglyphs. Return to the trailhead by the same route. Hike

leader’s pace is moderate. Please call if you have questions about your ability to do the hike. We will hike the Jones Gap Trail to the Coldspring

Branch Trail. After a short distance, we will join the Bill Kimball Trail and head on up to a massive rock

formation named El Lieutenant. The Bill Kimball Trail up to El Lieutenant is tough, with an elevation

gain of 600 feet in one 1/4 mile section. The Bill Kimball Trail rejoins the Coldspring Branch Trail after

El Lieutenant, which we will take to the Raven Cliff Falls parking lot. From there, we will take the Tom

(MS) CONGAREE NATIONAL PARK - BIG TREE HIKE Start Time: 8:30 AM, Carpool departure from Earth Fare. Visit the only National Park in South Carolina with a focus on big old growth trees. This will be a level

hike through a unique and recognized habitat. We will see the national champion loblolly pine, a former

national champion overcup oak, and some really nice big specimen trees of cherrybark oak, swamp

chestnut oak, and others. Be prepared for a full day with water, lunch and good hiking boots. We will hike

approximately 5 miles and it could be muddy in places. Congaree NP expert, biologist John Cely will join

Saturday, February 17, 2018 (VS) JONES GAP, RAINBOW FALLS & FALLS CREEK FALLS Start Time: 8:00 AM Start at Jones Gap and hike up to Rainbow Falls, then to Pretty Place for lunch. Continue to Falls Creek

Falls and return to Jones Gap. M: 11, EG: 1600, R: VS Drive RT: 40 miles, $3.00, L: 25 Leader: Dale Hamann, 864.235.9709 (VVS) THE OTHER GREEN KNOB - BIG EAST FORK/BRIDGES CAMP GAP LOOP Start Time: 7:30 AM Starting from the Big East Fork trailhead (in Pisgah Ranger District off Hwy 276), we will take a steep

use trail up the ridgeline to meet the MST at Green Knob. (Note that this is not the same Green Knob as

the one in the Middle Prong Wilderness). We will then follow the MST south to meet the Bridges Camp

Gap Trail, with a side trip to Skinny Dip Falls, where we will have lunch. As we descend Bridges Camp,

(VVS) SHINING ROCK WILDERNESS - FORK RIDGE TRAIL TO TENNENT MT AND

BLACK BALSAM KNOB Start Time: 7:30 AM Fork Ridge trail to Tennent Mt and Black Balsam Knob using the Art Loeb trail to forest service road

816. Hike starts with a river crossing and a steep and continuous climb up to Ivestor Gap and onto

Tennent Mt and Black Balsam Knob. Great views throughout the entire hike. This is a challenging hike in

(S) PERSIMMON RIDGE TO OIL CAMP CREEK ROAD - SHUTTLE HIKE Start Time: 10:00 AM This is a combination of one of our favorite hikes with a new twist. We’ll drop hikers on Persimmon

Ridge Rd then shuttle cars to the trail end. We’ll then hike to “The Big Rock” at Ashmore Preserve. After

our lunch break we will continue northwest across the rock face and down the trail which ends at Oil

Camp Creek Rd where we have left our cars. sandy beach area for our break and to enjoy the views. Some may wish to wade in the river.

Return along the same route. For hikers not coming from Greenville, meet at the Walhalla Fish
