Apply Today for the GreenThumb Leadership AcademyNYC Parks GreenThumb is launching a new program to support people in leadership positions at community gardens. Garden leaders play a deeply important and unique role behind the scenes making sure community gardens are thriving and welcoming public spaces. These trainings will be for gardeners who are newly elected and stepping into leadership roles for the first time, garden leaders who are passing the torch to someone new, and any other garden coordinators who are transitioning to a more open, collectively managed group structure. We are inviting two people per garden to apply to be part of the first cohort of the GreenThumb Leadership Academy, which will include topics such as:

• Overview of GreenThumb, the GreenThumb Gardeners’ Handbook, and the landscape of city agencies

• Meeting facilitation

• Uprooting racism

• Conflict resolution

• Self-care and avoiding burnout

Workshops will be held every Saturday in January and February 2020. Please apply at bit.ly/GTLeadershipAcademy2020 by Wednesday, Oct. 30. Each gardener must apply separately, but there will be space in the application to let us know who you are applying with. Upon completing the GreenThumb Leadership Academy, graduates may be asked to join a group of garden leadership mentors who can help advise struggling gardens. Like all GreenThumb workshops and trainings, this program is free of charge.

Host Youth Volunteers in Your Garden!Mentor the next generation of gardeners by being a host site for GreenThumb Youth Leadership Council (YLC) members. The YLC is an intergenerational, service-learning program for youth between the ages of 12 and 21 to volunteer in a community garden. Host sites will receive extra supplies and YLC members can help with special projects. If your garden is interested in hosting YLC members in 2019–2020, please visit bit.ly/YLCGarden20. Harvest Fair took place at Hattie Carthan Community Garden for several years during the early 2000s. The garden is located at Marcy and Lafayette Avenues in Brooklyn and is named for Hattie Carthan (1900–1984), a Bedford-Stuyvesant resident who had a lifetime interest in trees. Hattie Carthan Community Garden was established in 1981 as the Lafayette-Marcy Garden in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn and renamed to honor Mrs. Carthan in 1985.
