June . July . August

While the city was inundated with snow and ice storms this past winter, community gardeners were hard at work. GreenThumb, in collaboration with Citizens Committee and Just Food, hosted our first Community Organizing Institute. The institute is a three-part series focused on developing a comprehensive toolkit for forming organizational structures, developing effective campaigns and engaging municipal agencies, elected officials and community-based organizations. At the end of the series, gardeners were awarded a certification of completion and walked away with a binder full of resources, armed with a new set of tools and an energized attitude. We want to thank Arif Ullah, Karen Washington, Yonnette Fleming and Owen Taylor for their amazing facilitation of the series. We hope to present this series again!

BUGs in the NewsIn observance of Black History Month, the Council of the City of New York proudly hon-ored the Black Urban Growers (BUGs), on Wednesday March 2nd, 2011. Speaker Christine Quinn and Council Member Letitia James presented BUGs with a proclamation. BUGs are the lead planners of the Black Farmers and Urban Gardeners Conference www.blackfarm-ersconf.org. The inaugural conference was held on November 19-21, 2010 at Brooklyn College, on the very day that the Black Farmers Pigford Settlement case was signed by President Barack Obama. Over 500 important stakeholders attended from all over the country as well as Toronto, Venezuela, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico to participate in discussions, workshops, and strategy development to forge food, farming and policy solutions for the Black community. Farmers, gardeners, activists, students, nutritionists and others from across the nation discussed critical issues, including food access and distribution, local food

production and making connections between rural and urban farming. The powerful workshops and forums were very successful in cultivating a greater appreciation for the role we play as stewards of our environment, particularly our shared urban soil that is inextri-cably linked with our City’s history and our future. BUGs is already organizing the second annual conference for later this year. Please stay tuned!

MillionTreesNYC Stewardship Corps Workshop Seriespresented by GreenThumb

MillionTreesNYC has planted tens of thousands of street trees since its launch. We need your help to keep these trees healthy and green! This summer, GreenThumb will host two different days of tree care workshops at community gardens in the Bronx and the East Village. Each day has two different workshops with a community lunch in between. The following workshops are part of a continued effort to explore the value of street trees in our city and how to care for them. See the workshop descriptions and dates and times below. For more information call (212) 442-8952.

Workshop #1'That Tree Saved My Life' Game Show (11am – 12pm)Compete to win while learning about the many benefits of trees, and leave with all the tools you'll need to care for the street trees in your neighborhood. Bring along friends and fellow gardeners to learn about the MillionTreesNYC Stewardship Corps. Know of a tree you’d like to take care of? Attendees will be able to “adopt” trees that they want to take care of, and become an official member of the Stewardship Corps!

Community Lunch (12-12:45pm)The host garden group will provide a community lunch for workshop attendees in between workshops. Come join us for a relaxing potluck lunch in the garden!

Workshop #2Hands-On Street Tree Care Demo (12:45 – 2:15pm)Get your hands a little dirty learning how to care for and beautify the street trees on your block. This workshop will cover all the basics: how to improve soil, watering tips, strategies for discouraging litter and pets, safe tree guard design, and planting a street tree bed garden. After the demonstration, you will have a chance for hands-on practice in tree pits in front of the garden. And of course, you'll be able to adopt your own tree to care for.

MillionTreesNYC Stewardship Corps Adopt-a-TreeAdopt a tree in your neighborhood& join the MillionTreesNYC Stewardship Corps!

What does it mean to adopt a tree?By adopting a tree, you or your group pledge to care for specific street tree(s) in your neighborhood. It’s free and easy to sign up, and gives you access to future tree care supplies and opportunities. Connect with other tree stewards throughout the city or strengthen your own neighborhood’s efforts.

Get all the tools you’ll need to care for street trees… The MillionTreesNYC Street Tree Care kit includes watering supplies, cultivator, trowel, gloves, trash bags, the MillionTreesNYC Tree Care Handbook, and an official Stewardship Corps membership card.

First Annual GreenThumb Fall Seed Swap in Partnership with ENY Farms!

There is no greater expression of self-sufficiency than saving your seeds. Seed swaps are a time honored exercise in knowledge sharing and community building. We at GreenThumb and ENY Farms are excited to host the first annual seed swap this Fall. Please save your seeds from your bountiful and varied harvest this season. Come prepared to talk shop and swap seeds. If you have other farm/garden-related items you want to bring to share/swap, feel free to do so. This will be an opportunity to meet farmers and gardeners from all over the city and share knowledge as well as resources. Please contact Bilen([email protected]) for information on how to save seeds and prepare for this swap. Look for the event announcement with details about the date, time and location in the Fall Program guide.

Calling All CommunityGardeners!

6

Greetings fellow GreenThumb Community Gardeners!

This coming September I will begin a two year graduate program in International Agricultural Development at the University of California at Davis. I have lived in Brooklyn all my life and I am going to miss planting garlic, harvesting beans, turning compost in Shiloh Garden, and working with community gardens in your neighborhoods. I am pleased to call myself a part of the GreenThumb family and wherever I go I will represent our organization and outstanding community with pride. I look forward to bringing community gardening forward on national and international scales through scholarship. We the community gardeners are often the researchees, but less frequently the researchers, and by taking an active leadership role in shaping our future we can improve gardens and their capacity for positive change. I hope to do my best in continuing to support New York City’s community and schools gardens from afar, and look forward to visiting with and checking in with you all. I plan to return better prepared and more seasoned in my abilities and approaches to serving the great-est community volunteers in the world. Thank you all for the amazing work you do, and especially for your patience and wisdom.
