Thank you for your interest in becoming a 2011 Justice Summer Intern at the Beloved Community Center inGreensboro, North Carolina. The Beloved Community center is a local grass roots organization that strives to
uplift and create Dr. Martin Lurther King Jr.s vision of a Beloved Community. Since our official founding
in 1991 the Beloved Community Center has been a leader in cutting edge social justice work in Greensboro
and around the nation. The BCC has participated and played a leader role in a variety of struggles since theearly 1990s, including the landmark Kmart Struggle for workers rights, the Free Kwame Cannon Campaign
for justice in the courts and criminal justice system, and the struggle for indigent health care. Recently, theBCC has been a leading force in building unity between African American and Latino communites, workingwith Farm Laborers, fighting for health and environmental justice and against the re-opening of the White
Street Landfill, pressing for professionalism and accountability within the Greensboro Police Department,
providing various services for our homeless neighbors, and playing a key role in bringing the first Truth andReconcilliation process to the United States.
We are very excited to have another class of Greensboro Justice Summer Interns in 2011. This ten week paid
internship will invite ten interns from diverse backgrounds and experiences to continue to build communityand fight for justice and equality in Greensboro and beyond. We invite all to apply who are interested in social
justice, community building, and improving Greensboro.
As a participant in Greensboro Justice Summer 2011 you will become immersed in the culture and mission of
the Beloved Community Center for 10 weeks. Interns will have the opportunity to not only receive extensive
training in community building and organizing by veteran organizers, but interns will work closely with aninter-generational team at the Beloved Community Center as they contribute to improving the City of
Greensboro. Interns may also have the opportunity to attend regional, state and national events that relate to
the work they are participating in.
Summer Interns will have the opportunitity to participate in the following areas:- Strategizing and implementing a 5 million dollar Energy Grant to make neighborhood
homes more energy efficient- Accountability and professionalism within the Greensboro Police Department
- Civic engagement and helping communities to understand the issues and the importance ofvoting- Door to door canvassing related to the issues above
- Homeless Hospitality House
- Interns may also have the opportunity to attend regional, state and national events that
relate to the work they are participating in.- Communications: telling our story when no one else will using the Internet and advanced
technology.
