With the season in full swing I’d firstly like to say a big thank you to all our patrolling mem-bers for continuing to meet their obligations as we approach the half way mark of the season.
All patrolling members, please note that Dean Iwanuscha has now been appointed the Direc-tor of Surf Life Saving following Chris Van Doorn’s resignation. Thank you Chris for your service and I look forward to working with Dean for the rest of the season. I’d also like to wish all our members a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you also in advance to those members who take time out on Christmas Day to patrol! Congratulations also to the string of great re-sults we’ve had lately, including: PDB U/8—U/10 Teams—2nd Overall PDB U/8—U/10 Little Dudes—3rd Overall GCCTs U/11-U/14—11th Overall We haven’t received the final points tally from the Fastest Man on Sand held on Saturday but I am aware that our Nippers did win 2 gold and 3 silver medals.
These results demonstrate the great work of our coaches and all those involved. On the building front, I’m pleased to inform everyone that the building committee have been doing some excellent work behind the scenes and we will be able to present the plans for stage 2 at a general meeting of mem-bers in the new year.
The Surf Club finance committee and the Sup-porters Club finance committee will be meeting prior to presenting the plans for stage 2 so that our members will know the full financial picture prior to making a decision. Finally, I recently had an experience that really hit home on how important the work that we do as surf club members is. A couple of weeks ago I was walking down Duranbah Beach for a surf when I saw a group of bodyboarders drag-ging in an unconscious elderly man in from the surf.
I ran down to help and, together with an off-duty lifeguard, delivered CPR on the patient for 20 minutes. Bystanders managed to wave down the Westpac helicopter but we had to continue with normal CPR, as there was no paramedic on board, for a further 10 minutes until the ambulance arrived. Unfortunately the patient did not make it but it does show the importance of the training we do and how we can be called upon at any time to apply the skills that we learn. Of a group of 10 or so people on the beach at the time only myself and the off-duty lifeguard had CPR knowledge. Had we not been there, the slim chance of reviving the patient would have been lost. So please, make sure you pay attention to your trainers when undertaking your awards and proficiencies. You never know when those skills will be called upon. Thanks, Liam
FROM THE PRESIDENT
VOLUNTARY PATROLS
CHRISTMAS DAY
ANY TIME THAT YOU CAN GIVE
TO HELP OUT ON PATROL ON
CHRISTMAS DAY
WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
PLEASE LET THE OFFICE
KNOW IF YOU CAN HELP
OR JUST TURN UP ON CHRISTMAS
DAY IF YOU FIND SOME SPARE TIME.
WE ARE ALSO EXPECTING A BUSY TIME FOR THE REMAINDER
OF DECEMBER AND ALSO JANUARY SO ALL PATROL MEMBERS
ARE ENCOURAGED TO HAVE A LOOK AT THE PATROL
WHEN THEY ARE AT THE BEACH AND TO JUMP ON AND HELP IF NEEDED.
IT IS A BIG ASK AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR BUT THE MORE PEOPLE WHO HELP
THE EASIER IT WILL BE ON EVERYONE.
THANK YOU
There must have been a lot of good little girls and boys this year as Santa looks like he has been
working very hard making all the toys, as Debbie said , Santa is looking very fit and slim this year.

Are you aware you can compete in a broad range of
events at Branch, State and Australian Championships?
Not everyone is an ironman or beach sprinter, but there
may well be other events that interest you in the future
such as R & R (2 and 5 person Teams); Open Water
Swims; Champion Lifesaver (and all-rounder event),
March Past, and Surf Board Riding (short board and
Malibu events). All of these events add to the cumula-
tive club score for Branch, State and Australian Titles.

The QLD Board Riding Championships will be held
at our beach Greenmount on the weekend of 21/22 Feb-
ruary. Under 11s through to Masters Categories. See
Rob Cusbert or the Club Office to enter.
R& R and March Past teams are also being estab-
lished. For 2 & 5 person events. If you wish to learn
this event and compete as a team see Geoff Carlin
(0408 436360) [email protected] As few new
members have transferred from other Clubs to establish
these teams, so now is the time to step forward if you
would like to start and prepare for Branch and State
(both on the Gold Coast this year).
If all Club members would like to keep up to date
with the dynamic development happening in our

A huge congratulations to Mariah Jones on her achievements at the “Orange Cup” in Holland and also the “German Cup” in Germany
Mariah won Bronze in the Open Female Super Lifesaver
and at the completion of the carnivals was ranked 5th overall in the Open Female category.
Early December was busy in the ski depart-ment! Nadine suggested the Club buy a SLSA ap-proved Fenn single ski with adjustable leg length to increase the number of events available to the crew of competitive female swimmers & board paddlers eg Taplin. Nad-ine said that Fenn surf skis were winning races at the Worlds and are competitive in the Aussie scene. Nadine has paddled a Fenn previously and loved it.
Fenn is a reputable ocean paddler ski and there are thousands of them being paddled in many countries. Most of them are the light weight ocean skis that do not meet SLSA criteria for competition.
In the Arabian Gulf I paddled both of the 2 lightweight Fenn skis I included in my stable of Australian & South African surf skis that I had at my surf ski paddling centre in Doha, Qatar in the Middle East for 5 years. I found them very fast and stable in the relatively flat waters of the Gulf.
Club President Liam Young informed me that SLSA have approved the Fenn LS surf ski for competition in Australia. On Saturday 5 December I collected a Fenn LS with a shallow seat from the supplier in Tugun and a deep seat Fenn LS from Tim Blomfield at North Kirra and brought them to the Club. North Kirra have 1 Fenn LS and are so happy they are buying another. Tim has had a personal Fenn LS for 12 months and is very happy with the way it performs in the surf. See photo below of 2 Fenns on my car.
I invited Nadine, Mariah, Leah, Erin, Nick and senior Coach Jason to trial the deep seat Fenn to assess it's suitability for po-tential competitors in the Club. For various reasons most did not wish to paddle. Due to dangerous surf conditions only Jason, Erin and I paddled the ski in the river. We all agreed that it performed well in the tricky wave in the river. Based on Nadine's recommendation and the above trial we suggest that the Club buy a deep seat Fenn LS surf ski. It is about $1,000 cheaper than all other com-petitive single skis on the market. I have been in Hawaii from 8-22 December to watch Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson and the other professional surfers tackle big waves at Pipeline. Check out the photo of me doing a serious face plant in the beach flags event at Cudgen Classic Carnival on 6 December! Yours in paddling. Professor ( Paul Saffigna).
