SERMON NOTES: WEEK 3, JULY 17, 2016Rev. Tim CarpenterBE ONE MAKE ONE ENGAGEServe

Today’s Core Question: What does it mean to SERVE?

To make disciples, we must ____________________, ____________________, ____________________.

To SERVE we must ____________________________________________.

Why Do We Serve?Reason #1 Why We Serve – ____________________________________.- Matthew 23:11 – “The greatest among you will be your servant.”

- Mark 10:45 – “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.”

- Matthew 20:27-28 – “…and whoever wants to be first must be your servant, just as the

Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve…”

- Mark 9:35 – “And He (Jesus) sat down and called the twelve. And He said to them, “If

anyone would be first, he must be last of all and a servant of all.”

- BONUS VERSE (no charge): Galatians 6:9 – “Do not grow weary in doing good, for in

due season you will reap, if you do not give up.”

Reason #2 Why We Serve – There is ____________________________________.

Reason #3 Why We Serve – Serving opens up the opportunity to share __________________________

_____________________________________.

John 6: 1-13, 25-29

Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival was near. 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” 8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but

how far will they go among so many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

Do we see the needs around us, or are we too busy to see the needs?25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” 26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.” 28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

The deepest need of every person is ____________________________________________________________.

We meet the needs both individually and as the faith family of Bethany Church.

SERMON NOTES (continued)

OPENINGShare some thoughts about Sunday’s sermon. What struck you the most from what Pastor Tim preached?

GOING DEEPER• Take some time to look at your life and answer/discuss the following questions:

- Do I know of any clear need in the lives of my non-Christian friends?

- Do I believe that the deepest need of every person is to have a saving relationship with Jesus Christ?

• What are ways you have seen serving others be a blessing in your own life?

CHALLENGE1. Spend time with some non-Christian friends and see if God makes some of their needs

apparent. Perhaps you can ask, “Do you need help with anything these days? Our pastor challenged us to serve friends so I wanted to see if I could serve you in any way.”

2. Invite a non-Christian friend to church services next Sunday. The worst thing he or she can say is probably, “No thanks.” (Yes – that’s the same challenge as last week. Go for it! You can do it!)
