What we doMicro magnetic modelling of magnetic materials
Magnetic simulations (nano wires, hard drives,
magnetic materials)
Atomistic and quantum mechanic
simulations
Structural analysis for sensors
We require lots of processors and memory constantly running
What we have now
Departmental computer cluster (18 nodes, dual processor, dual core with 16 Gb memory each) – 72 processors
Clustervision
1 cluster of 10 various different PC’s running Linux, mainly Viglen - 40 processors
1 PC per student and staff ~ 11 Pc’s
Housed in a cooled room for 2 cluster racks of 20 nodes
Plus -
Upgrades – why are we concerned
Typical ComputerHP DL360G5
Greener alternative (provided by Very-pc)
VeryPC Janus II

162 W 81 W
287 W 143.5 W
A simple comparison for power and price:
Cost 2 servers ~ £1500 (each)(2 x quad core) – 8 processors
1 servers ~ £3800 (each)(2 x quad core) - 8 processors
Upgrades - why
Typical Computer2 x HP DL360G5
Greener alternative (Very-PC)VeryPC Janus II
CO2 Saved over 3 years per unit: Approx 9 Tons~1.25 Range Rover Sports or 215 average Trees.
If we assume we run at average 80% utilization, with a PUE of 2 (conservative A/C consumption estimate), 24/365
3 year projection (@ £0.14/kwh)
£4459 £1927
Saving ~ £600 per year
Upgrades – reasons
Reduces the cooling required – saves university space
Makes us feel better – Raises university profile
More support and advertisement of such systems
Incentive for going green –> it would cost ~20% more in some cases to go green, but we are saving universities money.
A subsidised policy would be beneficial for both sides.
What we would like
