What it biodiesel?

• Diesel fuel manufactured from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled restaurant oils and greases through a series of chemical reactions.

• It is biodegradable, and produces less air pollutants than petroleum-based diesel.

How is biodiesel made (feedstock)

1. Virgin oils: such soy, canola, cotton seed, corn.2. Used cooking oil: collected from restaurants or

other food places.3. Yellow grease: which is mainly vegetable oil but

with high fat content and collected from restaurants.

4. Brown grease: grease collected from grease traps and has very high percentage of free fatty acids and animal fat.

Where is biodiesel used?

• Can be used in its pure form (B100) or blended with petroleum diesel in diesel cars, trucks, tractors.

• Common blends are B2 (2% biodiesel), B5, and B20. B2 and B5 can be used safely in most diesel engines.

• The higher the percentage of biodiesel, the more eco-friendly the fuel is.

What is the B Factor?

Much of the world uses a system known as the"B" factor to show the amount of biodiesel inany fuel mix: fuel containing1.100% biodiesel is referred to as B1002.20% biodiesel is labeled B20 3.5% biodiesel is labeled B5 4.2% biodiesel is labeled B2

Oil and Grease…

• Since virgin vegetable oil is expensive for the producers, the most economic choice for biodiesel feedstock is collection of used cooking oil collected from restaurants.

Demand higher than supply

• The estimated transportation diesel fuel and home heating oil used in the US is about 350 billion pounds.

• The US estimated production of vegetable oil for all uses is about 24 billion pounds and estimated production of animal fat is 12 billion pounds.

BioWillie

• Willie Nelson has formed a Biodiesel Company to distribute his own blend of biodiesel fuel called BioWillie.

• Made of 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent diesel, BioWillie is now available at various locations in Texas and along the Eastern Seaboard
