The main aspects of Green Star are already applied to the foundations of our businesses, our extensive property portfolio. Every time we work on our buildings, whether it be a new design or a renova-tion, Kinepolis always works with the comfort and convenience of film-lovers and employees in mind. By using innovative materials and specialist building techniques, we aim to further improve the environmental credentials of our buildings and further reduce our ecological footprint.

A milestone in the sustainability policy was the digitization of the projection systems, which made the chemical production of film and the transport of voluminous, heavy rolls of film superfluous. The breakthrough in online transactions has also resulted in greener operations. Smartphone users are able to retrieve their tickets digitally. All of these steps have enabled Kinepolis to significantly reduce its environmental impact.

The use of utilities is another object of permanent attention. Various energy-saving measures have led to a significant reduction in the consumption of electricity, gas and water.

Intensive awareness-raising efforts have helped drastically reduce waste flows. As well as preven-tion, a great deal of attention has been given to selective collection and ecologically processing of the different waste types. Permanent attention is also given to new techniques and initiatives to give these trends a permanent nature.

Through Green Star we also want to pay attention to our own employees, of course. Each and every one of them is given the opportunity to get the best out of themselves and develop their personal and collective talents at Kinepolis. That’s because happy employees make happy visitors and partners. The interaction with our employees is key to achieving the goals in the Green Star program. Our active feedback culture should be seen in the same light.

Lastly, Kinepolis also wants to give attention to all social target groups. This engagement is expressed in our film program and the conceptualization of our cinemas. Our social engagement is also demonstrated in various social projects.

Green Star’s role begins when we develop our property portfolio. We make efforts to enable sustainable, environmentally aware operations both when designing new Kinepolis buildings and when renovating existing facilities. Energy and environmental performance are key concepts here, alongside the comfort and convenience of our visitors and employees.

In new-build projects we endeavor to minimize our environmental footprint in various ways, including:

★ The use of certified materials and techniques with a limited ecological impact

★ The choice of ecological energy sources like solar energy and methane gas from waste

★ The simplicity of maintenance, an important factor in the total cost of ownership, which itself is the sum of the building and operating costs

★ The development of multifunctional spaces that can be easily adapted for different purposes without the need for far-reaching alterations

Renovations are often the ideal opportunity to implement additional measures. There are numerous options for upgrading the ecological credentials of buildings, such as:

★ Placing additional insulation during roofing work

★ Insulating the parking spaces under the theatres

★ Using water-permeable asphalt when renovating parking lots to take advantage of the absorption capacity of the soil

★ Installing rain drains to catch surface water

★ Proactively replacing old boiler regulation systems

★ Replacing existing floors in our Megacandy shops with Gerflor, 100% recyclable PVC flooring that does not contain any formaldehyde.

To ensure the green character of our buildings, one cinema in Hasselt has already been BREEAM-assessed. The results were positive!

DIGITIZATIONThe digitization of film has driven a significant improvement in quality in theatres. It was also a key moment in Kinepolis’ sustainability policy. Digital projection makes the use of film stock superfluous, so this has greatly reduced our environmental impact in one go. Digital distribution also means that physical film rolls no longer need to be transported, which is an additional factor in the reduction of our ecological footprint.

MOBILE TICKETINGAs our audience has grown used to digital transac-tions in general and online purchases in particular, an additional opportunity has been created for us to drive down the environmental impact of our operations even further.

With mobile ticketing, customers are able to buy tickets on their smartphone or tablet and do not need to print it out to gain entry to the presenta-tion. The introduction of seat numbering and reservations contributes to a better customer experience, while also stimulating online sales and cutting paper consumption. Paper tickets that are issued have been made smaller to reduce the overall paper mass.

ENERGY-SAVING MEASURES

LIGHTINGKinepolis is able to reduce electricity consumption year after year, due to the digitization of all multiplexes and intensive monitoring and adjust-ment of our technical systems. New technical measures are evaluated and introduced to support energy saving, such as:

★ LED lighting, first in the theatres, but recently also in the foyers and other spaces

★ Luminescent row numbering, making cabling and energy consumption unnecessary

★ Edge-lighted poster frames, which provide even lighting with good color density, but consume less energy and have a longer life

HEATINGKinepolis monitors gas consumption continuously, with the aim of driving down carbon emissions further. The replacement of old boilers together with the efficient Siemens heating system have significantly improved energy efficiency in our theatres without compro-mising on visitor comfort and convenience.

Kinepolis continues to look for ways to deploy alternative heating technologies. For instance, the heat generated by our projectors is used to heat the foyers where possible.

SAVING WATERLike gas and electricity, water can play a decisive role in the size of the ecological footprint. With that in mind, Kinepolis has implemented a wide range of measures to drive down water consumption and prevent waste.

Notable measures included:

★ Replacement of traditional washbasins with automatic water-efficient systems that use optical detection

★ Replacement of collective flushing of urinals by separate flushing

★ Use of rainwater to flush the toilets ★ Limiting the water flow through the urinals

WASTE PREVENTION AND SORTINGFor many years, Kinepolis has given lots of attention to limiting the quantity of waste, selective collection and specialized removal of waste flows. Visitors are constantly reminded to sort their waste. Separate containers are provided to facilitate selective collection. The various waste streams are then removed and processed by specialist companies.

Prevention is key to limiting waste. Kinepolis increasingly replaces the automatic hand towel rolls in toilets with electrical drying systems with a significantly smaller environmental impact.

When seats are refurbished, cushions are retained wherever possible and only replaced in the event of wear. However, the upholstery is always replaced.

RAISING AWARENESSAt Kinepolis we spare no effort to constantly raise awareness among our staff and visitors of the need to save energy and minimize waste in our quest to meet our targets. Various recurring communication campaigns emphasize the necessity of a rational approach to water, energy and waste.

URBAN REDEVELOPMENTThe presence of a cinema is a powerful stimulus for the social and economic climate. Kinepolis is so much more than a multiplex. Through the presence of our cinemas, we have played an essential role in urban redevelopment at many locations.

ECONOMIC STIMULUSToday’s cinemas offer so much more than just movies. It is an ideal hub for the development of secondary economic activities, like the sale of audiovisual material, cinema-related products, cafes and restaurants. With this in mind, Kinepolis cinemas are a rich source of business opportunities for commercial partners. MOBILITYKinepolis encourages the use of alternative transport to minimize traffic problems around its multiplexes. All Kinepolis sites offer covered cycle parking facilities and where possible the site is made accessible and open to public transport.

providing new cultural content are just two examples of how Kinepolis is working on integra-ting social and ethnic minorities even more.

Kinepolis also wishes to assume its social respon-sibility and enhance its social engagement by supporting specific projects. This can be done by sponsoring, patronage and benefit campaigns, or by stimulating social employment. At some sites, the greenery is tended by employees of a social enterprise, which offers people with a disability the opportunity to gain work experience in a realistic work environment based on a socially inclusive vision.

Most sites are equipped with automatic external defibrillators (AEDs). Kinepolis welcomes millions of visitors who have lost their heart to film and Kinepolis wants to keep those hearts safe.
