Requirements: Applicants must be enrolled
in a two-year, four-year, or graduate program
in horticulture, botany, environmental
education, history, museum education, or a
related field. Internship responsibilities may
include developing a project proposal,
conducting program activities, and presenting
a written and oral project report. These in-
person internships will follow CDC guidelines
for health safety.
Compensation: Interns will be temporary,
part-time employees of the Fairfax County
Park Authority. Compensation is $11.43/hour
for up to 300 hours. Start and end dates are
negotiable.

Children’s Education Internship
The intern will assist with planning and
conducting nature-based programs for
children and families, including summer
camps.
Historic Resources Internship
The intern will research and document
aspects of the site's history and local history
and use the information to develop historical
interpretive programs and exhibits for the
public.
Horticulture Internship
(White Gardens)
The intern will focus on basic garden
maintenance and invasive plant removal.
Intern will help in organizing and leading
volunteers for workdays.
The internships are generously supported by
the Friends of Green Spring (FROGS), the
Potowmack Chapter of the Virginia Native
Plant Society (VNPS), and the Falls Church
Garden Club.

with a 1784 Historic House that offers themed
gardens for enjoyment, education and inspiration.
Horticulture Internship
The intern will work in a variety of gardens, learning
basic maintenance activities such as weeding and
mulching. Internship will help to hone plant
identification skills and provide opportunities to work
with staff and volunteers.
Virginia Native Plant Internship
The intern will focus on the Virginia Native Plant
Garden and the adjacent riparian woodland. Potential
projects include invasive plant management and native
plantings in the natural areas.
Urban Agriculture Internship
The Urban Agriculture Intern will assist with the
administration of Fairfax County ’s Garden Plot
Rental Program. Duties will include physical
clearing of plots for new tenants, writing a weekly
summary of activities, interacting with gardeners
to implement organization plan, and entering plot
inspection data into Excel spreadsheets.

the Farmers Markets, supporting
SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional
Assistance Program), and
coordinating logistics in preparation
for National Farmers Market week,

Historic Resources Internship Announcement

Job Title: Historic Resources Intern
Description: Green Spring Gardens is a 31-acre public garden with a 1784 Historic House that offers
themed gardens for enjoyment, education, and inspiration. Visit our website at
www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/green-spring/.
The intern will assist with all aspects of daily operations of the Historic House, including
interpretation of the house and its historic landscape for daily visitors, taking program
reservations, and assisting as needed with historic programs. The internship will involve
researching and documenting various aspects of the site’s history and local history as it
relates to Green Spring. The intern will also assist in researching for and developing
historical interpretive programs for the public, cataloging archival documents, and
developing exhibits. This in-person internship will follow CDC guidelines for health safety.
This internship is generously funded by the Friends of Green Spring (FROGS).
Compensation: Interns will be temporary, part-time employees of the Fairfax County Park Authority.
Compensation is $11.43/hour for up to 300 hours. Start and end dates are negotiable.

Job Title: Horticultural Intern– Virginia Native Plant Garden
Description: Green Spring Gardens is a 31-acre public garden with a 1784 Historic House that offers themed
gardens for enjoyment, education, and inspiration.
The internship will focus on the Virginia Native Plant Garden and other adjacent natural areas.
Internship responsibilities include garden maintenance, attending a meeting or field trip of the
Potowmack Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society (VNPS), and assisting VNPS with
propagation and other activities.
The internship is generously funded by the Potowmack Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society.
Compensation: Interns will be temporary, part-time employees of the Fairfax County Park Authority. Compensation
is $11.43/hour for up to 300 hours. Start and end dates are negotiable.
Requirements: Applicants must be enrolled in a two or four-year horticulture, botany, environmental education or
similar degree program. Internship responsibilities include writing an article about the internship for
the VNPS Potomack Chapter’s newsletter.

Invasive Plant Management Internship

Job Title: Horticultural Intern at White Gardens
Description: The John C. and Margaret K. White Gardens is a new public garden in Falls Church with
an azalea, rhododendron, and camellia collection established by John and Margaret
White. The thirteen-acre garden is under development. Internship activities will focus on
identifying, mapping, and developing a management plan for invasive plants, and
organizing and leading volunteers for monthly workdays. Knowledge of GIS/GPS-based
mapping systems is desired, and experience working with volunteers will be beneficial.
The internship will be based at Green Spring Gardens.
Compensation: Interns will be temporary, part-time employees of the Fairfax County Park Authority.
Compensation is $11.43hour for up to 300 hours. Start and end dates are negotiable.

conducting plant-based nature programs, assisting with all aspects of summer camps, gardening

Job Title: Urban Agriculture Intern
Description: Green Spring Gardens is a 31-acre public garden with a 1784 Historic House that offers themed

The Urban Agriculture Intern will assist with the administration of Fairfax County’s Garden Plot
Rental Program. Duties will include physical clearing of plots for new tenants (manual labor),
writing a weekly summary of activities in our Demonstration Garden for distribution to 650
gardeners, interacting with gardeners to implement our new organization plan, and entering plot
inspection data into Excel spreadsheets. Special projects as assigned.
Compensation: Interns will be temporary, part-time employees of the Fairfax County Park Authority.
Compensation is $11.43 hour for up to 300 hours. Start and end dates are negotiable.
Hours: 15 hours per week (must be on-site with few exceptions) 9am -2pm Tuesdays, Thursdays, and one other day Start Date: April 1 but no later than May 15 End Date: July 30 with possible extension up to August 20 Requirements: Applicants must be enrolled in a two or four year horticulture, botany, environmental education or
similar degree program. Preferred applicants will have good written communication skills as well
as experience and/or commitment to educating adults in best gardening practices. Applicants
must be able to lift 25 lbs., walk on uneven terrain, work outdoors and have own transportation.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with data collection and reporting , OSHA training and/or site safety training, Good handwriting skills, Microsoft Office skills including Word and Excel, Botanical knowledge helpful but not required

Job Title: Fairfax County Farmers Markets Intern Description: Green Spring Gardens and the Fairfax County Farmers Markets (FCFM) invites qualified
undergraduate students to apply for our 2021 summer internship program. We are seeking an intern who can assist in promoting the Farmers Markets, supporting SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program), and coordinating logistics in preparation for National Farmers Market week, and other promotional events. Must be available August 1-10 for Farmers Market Week and months preceding for planning purposes. Duties of the intern include (but not limited to): 1. Event coordination and implementation (Farmers Market Week)
2. Marketing/newsletter assistance 3. Developing and conducting surveys 4. Inventory management for Farmers Market materials 5. Market Manager as needed 6. Attend and report on Fairfax Food Council/Urban Ag Working Group meetings
Compensation: The intern will be a temporary, part-time employee of the Fairfax County Park Authority.
Compensation is $11.43/hour for up to 300 hours. Applicants should be able to work a flexible schedule.
Requirements: Applicants must be enrolled in a two or four-year college and be able to provide written enrollment
