What are climate change and global warming, and how are
they related?

India, like other developing economies, may lose up to 1.7% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) if the annual mean temperature rises by 1 degree Celsius compared to pre-industrialization level, hitting the poor the most.

Indeed it is estimated that every 10C increase in thetemperature is likely To lead to 5-10% reduction in theyields of some crops.Sources: Pauchori 2009

Population Displacement
The term “Environmental refuges” has now been coined for those populations who are displaced by environmental/disaster which are directly linked with climate change.

Case Study
The Sundarban Island in West Bengal are sinking. 7,000 people have alreadybeen displaced and by 2030, it is anticipated that over 70,000 people from thisarea will be exposed to the risk of losing their home and livelihoods due to sealevel rise, increased cyclone intensity and flooding.

“It is estimated that sea level rise by 3.5 to 34.6 inchesbetween 1990 and 2100 would result in saline coastalgroundwater, endangering wetlands and inundating valuableland and coastal communities. The most vulnerable stretchesalong the western Indian coast are Khambat and Kutch inGujarat, Mumbai and parts of the Konkan coast and southKerala,” says the report submitted to the UN.

Lighting Billion Lives • Inadequate lighting hinders progress and
development opportunities
• Over 1.3 billion people around the world have no access to electricity
• 360 million people in India lack access to electricity
• 2.2 billion liters of kerosene burnt each year for lighting
• About 5.5 million tonnes CO2 emitted to the atmosphere by burning of this kerosene

What is Green (R)evolution?
Under the leadership of the Secretary-General, United Nations, governments have advanced international efforts to fight, mitigate
and adapt to climate change.
At the Climate Conference (COP) in Cancun in 2010, governments adopted the Cancun agreements, forming the basis for the largest-ever collective effort to reduce carbon emissions and address the long-term
challenges of climate change.
Green (R)evolution is an Initiative to Educate, Inspire and Act on Mitigation & Adaptation methods of Climate Change.
