Lake Wales guard Doug Brooks was so highly regarded by Virginia Commonwealth University, the school offered him a scholarship before the end of his junior year. It took a year, but Brooks finally signed with the Richmond, Va., school on Wednesday, April 17th.
VCU, known for its pressing defense, appears to be a perfect fit for the high-energy Brooks. "When I went to visit during the break, I saw something that I needed," Brooks said. "They're going to make me work harder and better my game. It's a big deal for me. It's the beginning of a new life for me. It's going to be a challenge, but I'm willing to step up and take this challenge."
Brooks, who led the Highlanders to the Class 5A regional finals a year after helping them win the state title, was surrounded by numerous family members, teammates and people in the community at the B Street Community Center. Former coaches Billy Dee Washington and Burney Hayes also were in attendance. "This is special for the school, the community and his family," Washington said. "He's going to be an inspiration to his young siblings to get to
this point. It's great for the program and the town, and hopefully we can have more to follow suit."

The Board of Directors extends their deepest appreciation to all parties who
were instrumental in making the March 1, 2013 Gala Affair a success. Also, special thanks go out to the Fundraising Committee (Chaired by: Albert Hawkins, Jr. and Co-Chaired by Carole Kuehn) who made it happen. Please note that this gala event represents one giant step closer toward the ultimate goal of the Foundation; that is, to establish a State of the Art facility to serve the Lake Wales Community. As such, our Service Center will expand its ability to deliver the ultimate in Intake and Referral activity as well as provide assistance in Youth Development, Job Training, Computer Classes, After School Enrichment, Recreation, Public Accommodation, Support Services, and benefit family focused programming.
At this time we must be reminded that as a Foundation our most visible evidence of strength and viability comes through providing financial, organizational and promotional assistance to our participating members in connection with furthering personal, career and community development. To this end, the Board of Directors have been actively seeking to expand our current facility at a reasonable cost (an April 4, 2013 review meeting was held at the Center to assess the current status and programs funding prospect at this time). Despite these efforts we have yet to break through, due mainly to the recent down turn in the US Economy from 2007 – 2012. Hopefully, we are about to turn the corner and move forward with the current plans to expand by 7,611 Sq. Ft.
Please remember that through you, there is a light in the tunnel to help overcome adverse conditions. As a united force, we will make a difference in the future of young people we serve and at the same time make life more comfortable for the elderly.
As President of what is primed to be a progressive pro-active community based organization, I would like to leave you with a favorite quote from a famous business woman: “If we work for the things we believe in, we are rich, though the way is rough. Work only for money, and you never get quite enough.”

Thanks to All, Clinton Horne, President Green & Gold Foundation, Inc.
The Inaugural Green & Gold Gala hosted at the Lake Wales County Club in March, honored Clint Horne, Albert Hawkins, Jr. and Jerome Mack and brought together over 200 members of our community for a delightful evening.
Hawkins, Horne & Mack were totally surprised when they were given plaques recognizing their 30+ years of commitment to making the community better by offering and supporting many educational and employment opportunities. Their contributions to education in this community, usually behind the scenes, are numerous - especially their involvement with the Charter School initiative.
The honorees were presented with acrylic plaques that read "Congratulations to a Shining Star with a heart full of grace" and included a well-deserved gold star. Presenters were Robin Gibson, Howard Kay, and Rev. James Cleare who all complimented the men on their major contributions to the community.
Guests enjoyed a prime rib or fish dinner, cash bar, live & silent auctions and music. A power point presentation made by Bok Academy’s IT dept., music from the high school orchestra and miniature desserts from Lake Gibson Culinary Arts Academy added to the festivities.
Congratulations to the winners of the Toshiba Laptop, Canon Camera, IPod, Kindle and 46" screen TV. The drawing netted approx. $3000 and all monies earned went directly to the "B" Street community Center for continued programing and needs. It was a memorable evening that everyone truly enjoyed !!!
***Mark your Calendars and SAVE THE DATE: Friday, February 28th, 2014. You won't want to miss the next Green & Gold Gala. ***
Thank You to a wonderful committee, chaired by Mr. Hawkins, for their hard work in making the evening such a success!!!
