Day 5 Kusadasi/Patmos This morning we arrive on the continent ofAsia and to Kusadasi, Turkey, located nearby Ephesus, one of the “SevenWonders of the Ancient World”. The major attraction is the archaeologicalsite of ancient Ephesus, considered to be the most important in Turkey. Thehistory of this ancient city dates back to 10th century BC; many remarkablestructures seen today are a result of an excavation and restoration program. There are temples, houses of noblemen, and community buildings liningancient streets. Nestled in the mountainside is a 25,000-seatamphitheater, still used for performances during Festival of Culture and Art.Bible buffs may know Ephesus as inspiration for St. Paul’s Epistle toEphesians and the site of one of the first seven churches of Asia Minor.Among the better-known ancient sites near Kusadasi are ancient Miletusand Dydima. Remains include a well-preserved Roman theater at Miletusand Dydima's sacred temple of Apollo. The island has a fairly active artists' colony, and it's notuncommon to come across a painter at work. Much of its flavor andarchitecture arrived with the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, who occupiedit from 1310-1522. In the capital, Rodos, see the medieval quarter of OldTown and the Agios Nikolas Tower, which stands where the Colossus ofRhodes once stood. Santorini owes its geological peculiarities to a massive volcanicexplosion some 3,500 years ago that blew out the center of the island. The cliffs that jut out of the sea are what's left of the crater rim.
