Pre-classical era – This era represents the ancient culture of the Greeks and how the Literature started.

Classical era – This era represents the “Dawn of the Drama”

Hellenistic era – This was when the Greeks started writing history

Poets express Greek Ideas:

Poetry played an important part in expressing Greek view of life.

Famous Greek Poets:

HOMER:His poems were usually showing people striving to live up to standards of courage and honor. He lived during the Pre-classical era.

PINDAR:He often writes about victors or to those who were killed in battle. He lived during the Classical era.

SAPPHO:

Greek poetry was an important part of religious festivals.Dancers and singers took part, and poems were chanted by a group of performers called the chorus.

These performances gradually developed into plays.

An actor named Thespis stepped away from the chorus and spoke lines as an individual. Soon a second then a third actor began to take major roles and spoke back and forth with a chorus.

The Athenian ruler, Pisistratus sponsored the first drama festival.

Greek Dramas:The tragedies

Playwrights used these stories to explore human problems. They showed dignity of heroes in the face of trouble. This plays were called tragedies.

The dramatists believed that people have freedom to make decisions, which might bring them greatness or disaster.

The dramatist Aristophanes was one of the most famous comic dramatist.

The Writing of history

Greek historian were the first to examine the past with a critical eye.

They carefully investigated events, checked facts, and tried to understand people’s action and motives.

Greek HIstorians

Herodotus -- called the “father of history”. He often included ancient stories and legends in his accounts, but he also made his known investigations of recent events.

Thucydides – His works contained no myths, legends or supernatural explanation of events. He believed that the historian must search for human motives and natural causes.

The Greek Sculptors:

The statue of athletes had well-developed, well-proportioned bodies, while the face were shown in perfect features.

Phidias – created the ivory-gold statue of Athena for Parthenon. He also created the statue of Zeus at Olympia

Greek Architects:

Architects applied mathematical laws and proportions to their temples and theaters and tried to make the structures fit in with the natural surroundings. The examples of these architectures are the temples found on the Acropolis and the famous Parthenon.
