26 S o r t Introduce/Model Small Groups • Use the whiteboard DVD or the CD word cards to introduce the words. Ask students what they notice about the words. • Display capitol and captive. Guide students to identify a pattern. (cap) Have them sort the appropriate words into this category. • Explain that cap has a Greek and Latin meaning— "head" and "to take." • Have students sort the remaining words according to the ped and corp patterns. Explain that ped means "foot" in this sort (it can also mean "child") and corp means "body." Practice the Sort Independent/Partner • Have students use the Student Book or whiteboard DVD to say each word and use the grid to sort. • Have students check and explain their sorts. Apply Independent/Partner/Small Groups • Read aloud the directions on Student Book p. 104. Have students complete the activity. Game Allow time for students to play Clue In, which is on the CD. Extend the Sort Vocabulary W ord O f the W eek: capitol Help students deduce the meaning of capitol by providing a sample sentence, such as We hurried up the steps into the capitol to see our state congress in session. Have a volunteer consult a dictionary and clarify that capitol means a building where a legislature meets. Alternative Sort: Parts of Speech Have students sort the words by the categories nouns, verbs, and others. When students have finished the sort, challenge them to use one of the nouns and verbs together in a sentence. ELL English Language Learners Give extra support and practice for pronouncing the sort words. Help students remember the difference between the similar words: corps and corpse.
