Disc Golf at Basil Marella Park on English Road in Greece is a great way to get outdoors, be active and take in the fall scenery and colors. A beautiful 18 hole, wooded course has a creek that comes into play on several of the holes. No matter what your skill level, you will find the course “new” user friendly and great outdoor fun. Pictured are Chelsea Carl and Jason Wolck test-ing their disc golf skills.

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich

As the weather begins to cool down and the leaves begin to fall, we look back to all the great developments the Town of Greece has made this summer.

Construction on the new Pavilion structure at Town Hall campus will be completed in the coming weeks. This Pavilion was made possible by a grant secured from Senator Robach. Additionally, six courts dedi-cated entirely to Pickleball are being constructed as well. Both projects have progressed throughout summer, and the good news is we are near completion and we are excit-ed to begin using this area for concerts, community events, and as a central gathering place for residents to enjoy.

This summer also saw the successful launch of Supervi-sor Reilich’s Summer Concerts at the Hall. A three part se-ries that played host to a number of musical acts including Beatle Magic, the Greece Choral Society, and a tribute to the music of the Rat Pack. Attendance grew gradually with each event, and this program became one of the most pop-ular this summer. Next year’s shows will take place inside the brand new Pavilion structure, and the buzz is already growing.

Our community was also involved in Beach Cleanup Day which is an annual cleanup of beaches all across New York State. This year volunteers collected an impressive 500 plus pounds of trash from along our shorelines. Over fifty volun-teers registered to participate in this years’ cleanup effort in Greece making this one of the most successful turnouts we have seen. Events such as this really allow communi-ty members to work together to make this a better place to live, and show how much they care about the Town of Greece.

I look forward to what the coming months have to offer, and as always encourage residents to contact me with any problems or concerns they may have.

On Saturday, November 8, the Greece Historical Society and Museum will host its fourth annual Native American Day at the Greece Community and Senior Center, 3 Vince Tofany Blvd., from 10 a.m. to noon. The schedule of events includes a special storytelling performance by Perry Ground at 10:15 a.m.

Mr. Ground, who has been telling stories for more than twenty years, is a Turtle Clan member of the Onondaga Na-tion of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy. He uses storytelling as a means of educating people about the cul-ture, beliefs and history of the Haudenosaunee. Ground is a dynamic storyteller and “has been known to jump off the stage and run right into the audience and make the listener part of the story.” He feels it is a great honor and responsi-bility to perpetuate the stories he learned from the elders of various North American communities and preserve their oral tradition.

Returning to the event this year is the Assistant Curator of Anthropology at the Rochester Museum and Science Center, George Hamell, with a display of relics such as ar-rowheads and pottery found at the ancient sites of Seneca hunting and fishing camps, including along Greece’s ponds, the Genesee River, and what is now Latta Road near Our Mother of Sorrows Church.

In addition, Frieda Schultz, a member of the Wolf Clan of the Tuscarora Nation, will be there to reminisce about growing up on the reservation near Niagara Falls where her father was a chief and shaman.

All ages are invited to attend this free program. For more information call the Society at 225-7221.

On the “Healthy Highway”

It began for Wen-dy Cooper during the last five years of her 30 year teaching career, from which she recently retired. A physical educa-tion teacher in the Greece school dis-trict, Cooper used traffic metaphors to teach safety concepts to her students. “It really just took off from there. The students responded to the vocabulary and the concept of a traffic team, and the safe-ty aspect of watching out for each other,” Cooper said.

She found the students connected with the ideas and the themes of transportation, and it grew into thinking about the body as a automobile and how the fuels that are put into the body have a direct result on the perfor-mance of the body. “The kids are familiar with the traffic signs and stop lights and the ideas grew and spread into a school wide program with common v o c a b u l a r y and goals to eat healthy, become more active, and e n c o u r a g e team work,” Cooper said.

The pro-gram has a pledge that the students take, “I prom-ise to make one healthy choice every day to keep my engine strong.” Cooper found that taking the pledge cre-ates awareness of choices. “Isn’t that what we all need to do? Just make ourselves aware of our choices and that,

in turn, leads to better habits. I found that many of the students start with one choice and then they are tell-ing me it led to two, then three. The result is a healthy lifestyle,” Cooper said.

Cooper has designed a classroom kit called “Healthy Rules of the Road.” It contains a Curriculum Guide with safety and nutrition lessons, posters and mini signs with healthy slogans that give kids a hands-on approach to healthy activities. There are also food cards for visual learning containing green (every day healthy foods), yellow (slow down and think foods) and red (stop and think) traffic lights for foods and snacks. “An impor-tant part of the program is that students are taking the healthy lifestyle choices into their homes and families,” she said.

The Healthy Highway program concepts are integrated throughout the school day in the classrooms and cafeteria which act as “learning labs” to achieve goals. The pro-gram gives stu-dents practi-cal ways to be healthy and en-courages them to take respon-sibility for their own health. Teachers have come up with creative ways to implement the Healthy High-way program into lesson plans and activities including planting a gar-den, creating and preparing healthy food recipes, and relay races.

English Village Elementary School has been work-ing with Cooper for the past three years and has seen that the students truly embrace the concepts of the program. Students are observed talking to each other about the healthy choices and encouraging each other in their choices. The intake of salads has doubled over the past year.

Cooper was asked to bring her Healthy Highway pro-gram information to the 9th Alliance for a Healthier Generation Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C. this past September. The Alliance was started by President Bill Clinton as part of the Clinton Foundation. President Clinton was the opening night speaker at the summit where 250 schools from across the country were hon-ored for transforming their environments into healthier places by meeting standards in physical activity and healthy eating at school.

be a sponsor and participate in the sum-mit. It was truly a celebration of schools. I met so many people who are dedicated, passionate and determined to help our kids get healthier. I really got so much more out of attending than I gave,” Coo-per said.

Cooper sums up the message of Healthy Highway this way, “We want our students to know that they can do it. The program offers education and practical ways to show students what determi-nation can achieve, and how it changes lives. The goal is to make sure that our children grow up to be healthy adults.”

Lentini’s resume includes over thirteen years of experience serving as President and CEO of a non-profit membership association, the Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Roch-ester, where she led and managed all operations, includ-ing membership and member services, finance, human resources, strategic planning, program administration, and communications and public relations, as well as overseeing their long-standing health insurance program which pro-vided hundreds of Council members with affordable medi-cal/dental plans.

“We are excited to have Sarah join the Greece Chamber of Commerce as its next President and CEO,” said Delbert J. Once Loved Home Decor is a full service furniture and accessories consignment store. Owned and managed by Michele Noonan-Young and Michael Oliveri, the busi-ness was opened in November of 2013 and is located at 2633 West Ridge Road, Greece. “We opened our store on the westside of Rochester in order to give our custom-ers a place to professionally market their “once loved” home furnishings and accessories, and at the same time we felt there was a need on the westside for a place to purchase high quality furnishings at reasonable prices,” Michele says.

Consignment requirements for furnishings accepted at Once Loved Home Decor are uncompromising. “We are particular about the items we take on consignment. We carry pieces that have been truly loved and gently used. Everything in our store is affordably priced and in very good condition,” she says.

Once Loved Home Decor’s professional showroom is filled with lamps, pictures, mirrors, knick-knacks, dining room sets, living room furniture, kitchen sets, bedroom

furniture and more. They also carry high end furnish-ings, names like Ethan Allen, Stickley, Stanley and Bas-sett. An array of new items are available perfect for gift giving. Currently, popular with shoppers are couches, bedroom furniture and dressers, and decorative pieces. “I have customers coming in looking for everything from microwaves to Tiffany lamps,” Michele says.

Inventory is kept fresh in the showroom with the help of their consignment policy. The total consignment time for every item is 90 days. Items that remain in the store after 30 days are marked down by 10%, after 60 days they are 20% off, and for the final 30 days of consign-ment the total markdown is 30% off. We strive to make the shopping experience one that will entice our cus-tomers to want to continually return to see what new treasures have arrived,” Michele says.

Planet Botanica is a new company, launched in Sep-tember 2014. The goal of the company is to educate people about the use of es-sential oils for general health and well-being.

Owned by Linda Andreano of Greece, Planet Botanica is a company focused on educa-tion. “We work with community programs and classes to teach people about the health benefits of essential oils. We also do workshops for many health service providers in their office including chiropractic, acupuncture and reiki. We educate the staff and patients about prevention of ill-ness,” Andreano said.

Andreano notes that recently she has been receiving re-quests from doctor’s offices, business offices and day care centers to conduct workshops. “Managers want to keep their offices healthy, and we can show them ways to keep the viruses from spreading, and their employee’s immune systems boosted with use of essential oils,” she said.

Planet Botanica also provides, by request, private consul-tations with individuals in their homes.

They are associated with Améo Essential Oils which are 100% clinical grade essential oils. Andreano works with Améo because, “This is an exciting, cutting edge company in the field. We now have documentation and backup based on the studies they have conducted, scientific validation of the benefits of essential oils. Améo oils are also certified to be the highest grade and quality.”

Linda Andreano has been in business “all of my life,” she said. “I have worked with businesses in my consulting firm for over 20 years. The theme of my life is education. I am empowered by knowing that when I share knowledge with someone, it benefits their life.”

8 Easy Ways to boost your immune system naturally during cold and flu seasonBy Tami Mungenast (Certified Personal Trainer and Nutrition Consultant at Atlas Fitness)

Summer is over and many are already gearing up for cold and flu season. Don’t rely solely on the flu vaccine for protection. Although there is no single food or supplement that can keep the flu and viruses at bay, there are some ways to boost your im-mune system naturally and help give you a much better chance to fight viruses this winter.

The best line of defense comes from making a choice to live a healthier lifestyle. Very simple steps can help keep your immune system strong and healthy. Every part of your body, including your immune system, functions better when protected from environmental assaults and boosted by healthy-living strategies such as these:

Sleep: Lack of sleep can affect your immune system negatively. Studies show that people who don’t get quality sleep or enough sleep are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus, such as the common cold. Lack of sleep can also affect how fast you recover if you do get sick. During sleep, your immune system releases proteins called cytokines which help your body fight infection or inflammation. Sleep deprivation decreases produc-tion of these protective cytokines How much sleep do you need to bolster your immune system? The optimal amount of sleep for most adults is seven to eight hours of good sleep each night. Teenagers need nine to 10 hours of sleep. School-aged children may need 10 or more hours of sleep.

Exercise: Regular exercise is a pillar of healthy living. It im-proves cardiovascular health, lowers blood pressure, helps control body weight, and protects against a variety of diseases and helps maintain a healthy immune system. It may contribute even more directly by promoting good circulation, which allows the cells and substances of the immune system to move through the body freely and do their job efficiently.

Wash your hands: One of the most powerful weapons against the new viruses is summed up in a three-word phrase you first heard from your mother: wash your hands. Hand-to-face con-tact has a surprising impact on health. Germs can enter the body through breaks in the skin or through the membranes of the eyes, mouth and nose. Regular hand washing can reduce your virus transmission by over 20%.

Stress: If you’re stressed out, you are more likely to get sick. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine actually found that higher psychological stress levels resulted in a higher likeli-hood of catching the common cold and other viruses. The re-searchers accounted for many variables including the season; alcohol use; quality of diet, exercise, and sleep; and levels of antibodies before exposure to the virus. The conclusion is that higher stress was to blame for lowered immunity and higher in-fection rates.

Boost your intake of vitamin A and B: Experts have long known that vitamin A plays a role in infection and maintaining mucosal surfaces. Vitamin A deficiency is associated with impaired im-munity and increased risk of infectious disease. There is evi-

dence that Vitamin B enhance resistance to bacterial infections and helps improve immune function. Most good multi vitamins will have both the A and the B complex.

Vitamin C is proven effective: For years, dieticians and nutri-tionists have been well aware of the immune-boosting qualities extra vitamin C can provide. Vitamin C is perhaps best known for its ability to strengthen the immune system. But this potent nutrient also has many other important roles that control sig-nificant aspects of our health. Vitamin C helps manufacture col-lagen, which is used to heal wounds more quickly and support the walls of blood vessels, lessening your risk of stroke and heart disease. You can find vitamin C in citrus fruits and juices, broccoli, bell peppers, potatoes, strawberries, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, spinach.

Have some zinc: Zinc has also been found to help ward off sick-ness by boosting the immune system. In fact, experts note that one of the most common immune deficiencies are lowered levels of zinc. Pumpkin seeds and lean beef and oysters are rich sources of zinc. I personally take 50 mg of a zinc supplement at the earli-est symptoms of a virus and have excellent results in preventing a full blown viral illness.

And finally, eat well: A good, balanced diet rich in natural foods goes a long way to helping boost your immune system, if for no other reason than to provide many of the very vitamins and min-erals recommended here.

Nowadays our immune systems are being challenged more than ever. The modern lifestyle is for many is not very healthy. By making a few simple choices your diet and activity you can boost your health and immunity naturally. Check with your healthcare provider before taking supplementation or beginning an exercise program.

The Overtime GrillIt has been been Lisa Bowles’ dream to open her own

restaurant ever since she started working in restaurants at age 15. “A dream turned to a goal,” she said, “It took every cent, and then some, to open the doors.”

Lisa and Wayne Bowles are owners of The Overtime Grill with two locations in Greece, 4670 Dewey Avenue (865-2490) and 610 N. Greece Road (392-4141). Lisa’s dream of owning her own restaurant came true in Au-gust 2002 when the Bowles opened their first location on Dewey Avenue. The second location in North Greece opened in 2010.

“We are a family owned business, and I just love the restaurant business. I enjoy the environment and meet-ing new people. It makes me proud and gives me a feel-ing of warmth to know that people come to our restau-rant because they like our food,” she said. Lisa goes to each table and talks with the diners. “I want to make sure that everything is just right and that they are enjoying themselves,” she said. The slogan of The Overtime Grill is “We’re workin’ overtime to give you a great time!”

Both Overtime Grill locations are open 7 days a week and have a large menu including steaks, 10 oz. burg-ers, ribs, pasta, wings, sandwiches and daily specials.

Customer favorite dishes include Seafood Bianca - scal-lops, shrimp, crab, broccoli, olives and tomatoes with penne pasta, in a white wine sauce, and Stuffed Meat-balls - meatballs stuffed with ricotta cheese, covered with mozzarella cheese and red sauce. The Outdoor Grill serves fresh homemade bread everyday.

Lisa Bowles also has a catering business called “Workn’ Overtime.” “I developed a completely separate menu for catering. I built the menu based on all my catering jobs and specific food requests from customers,” Lisa said. Her eggplant parmesan is so loved it has a fan base, “Just last Sunday I made my 7th party order for eggplant parmesan, all seven orders were from different people who attended a party where my eggplant was served. I received a Facebook message from the woman who hosted the first party, she said, ‘the party conversation was dominated by talk about your eggplant parmesan, AGAIN!’ I feel so proud,” Lisa said.
