  • GreeceNewsNY.com March 2015 5GCSD Capital Improvement Vote March 24

On January 13, 2015, the Greece Central School District Board of Education approved three propositions that will be presented to Greece Central School District residents in a public vote on Tuesday, March 24, 2015. Board approval followed recommendations by the Capital Projects Committee, comprised of community members and school district representatives.Proposition 1 - Totals $35 million and would bring repairs and renovations to every Greece school and some other district buildings. Projects vary by location but would include:

Upgraded ventilation and exhaust systems Heating, cooling and pool system upgrades Flooring, window, lighting and roof replacement Masonry repairs and equipment replacement Telephone upgrades Parking lot reconstruction work

This project would authorize the district to make the proposed capital improvements, borrow the associated money necessary to finance this project and utilize about $5.2 million from the districts existing Capital Reserve Fund. For residents with no STAR exemptions, Proposition 1 would carry an estimated annual tax bill increase of 5 cents/$1,000 of assessed value each year for 15 years.Proposition 2 - Requests $8,490,289 to construct an athletic stadium on the Arcadia campus to be shared equally between all Greece high schools and be made available for community use. If approved, the stadium would include:

A lighted artificial turf field Seating for 2,600 A ticket booth, press box and equipment storage A concession stand, restrooms and team rooms Handicap accessibility

For residents with no STAR exemptions, Proposition 2 would authorize the district to construct the proposed stadium and borrow the associated money necessary to finance this project. Proposition 2 would carry an estimated annual tax bill increase of 12 cents/$1,000 of assessed value each year for 15 years. It is important to note that the approval of Proposition 2 is contingent on the approval of Proposition 1.Proposition 3 - Asks voters to approve the purchase of approximately four acres of land located at 1862 Latta Road, adjacent to the transportation facility, at a cost not to exceed $207,450. The cash purchase would have no impact on residential taxpayers. If approved, the district would weigh future plans to build a bus wash and storage facility at the site. Any construction on the property would have to be presented to voters separately and approved at a later date.

  • 10 GreeceNewsNY.com March 2015From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich

I hope everyone is staying safe and warm as we battle through another western New York winter season. I would like to remind residents to allow for extra travel time during their commute, and to be mindful of weather warnings. For the most up to date information on closures and road closures in Monroe County please visit monroecounty.gov.

While there may be snow on the ground, this does not stop Town Hall from planning ahead for the warmer weather. Bands are already booked for Supervisor Reilichs Summer Concerts at the Hall and will include performances by Beatlemagic, a tribute to the music of Elvis, and Josie Waverly. All three shows will be held in the new pavilion structure, and are held at no cost to attendees.

The Town of Greece Good Old Fashioned Fourth of July celebration is also receiving a lot of attention. Online registration for the 5K Freedom Run will be available shortly through the Yellow Jacket Racing Website. Additional food trucks will also be introduced to the celebration this year to provide residents with more options, and shorter lines. The fireworks display will again close out the night, and I cant wait to see how they exceed last years show.

The Greece Community & Senior Center is constantly announcing new events and programs. Registrations always goes quickly, so be sure to stay updated through our website. Remember, you can now follow us on Twitter (@GreeceTown) and Facebook for event updates and other Town related news in addition to checking our website. As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other town related issues. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

    Spotlight on Business

    LegalShieldby Barbara Burke

Pam Morgan, Independent Associate with LegalShield in Rochester, New York, has helped businesses, families and individuals with access to quality legal services for 10 years. My background is in the medical field. I have always wanted to help people, that is what I love to do. I am service oriented, and when I saw this opportunity to work with LegalShield, I knew it was the perfect job, Pam says.

For 40 years, LegalShield has been offering legal plans to over four million users in 49 states and 4 Canadian Provinces. LegalShield service plans are designed based on individual needs, and are available starting at $20.00 a month.

LegalShield provides affordable access to high-quality law firms with attorneys that consult with, advise, and represent their clients in all legal matters. Attorneys have an average of 19 years experience practicing law. They provide service for all types of legal issues from writing a letter or making a phone call on your behalf, to representation in court. Services include document preparation, wills, power of attorney, real estate matters, accidents, divorce, estates, IRS Audits, and more, covering the entire range of legal Pam Morgan

services needed by families, individuals, and businesses.Pam says a rapidly growing part of LegalShield is in Identity

Theft Protection. Every minute 19 people have their identity compromised. It causes total disruption of a persons way of life, and requires an average of 325 hours of stressful work to restore and reclaim an identity, Pam says.

On identity theft cases, LegalShield works with Kroll, a global company specializing in data security protection. If you are the victim of identity theft, Kroll provides professional help. Kroll uses a comprehensive identity restoration approach, where an investigator takes over your case, and does all of the research and paperwork needed to restore your identity to what it was before the fraud. Identity Theft Protection provides much needed peace of mind.

LifeGuard also offers Identity Theft Protection employee benefit programs to businesses. When an employees identity is stolen, the impact it is magnified within the business. All employees and the business owner are impacted in a negative way. Applications for Preservation Leagues Signature Grant Programs due by April 13

Applications are available to eligible municipalities and not-for-profit organizations to compete for Preserve New York and Technical Assistance Grants (TAG), the signature grant programs of the Preservation League of New York State and the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA).

A total of $153,603 is available in 2015. The League will disburse this amount over two grant rounds, Preserve New York and TAG in the spring, and an additional TAG funding round in the fall.

The application deadline for Spring TAG and 2015 Preserve New York is Monday, April 13. Guidelines for grants are posted on the Leagues website at www.preservenys.org. Prospective applicants must discuss proposed projects with Preservation League staff before receiving an application. Contact Erin Tobin, Director of Preservation, at 518-462-5658 x 12 for information or to request an application.Preserve New York provides support to identify, document, and preserve New Yorks cultural and historic buildings, structures, and landscapes. Grants can be made for historic structure reports, cultural landscape reports and cultural resource surveys. Eligible projects may include but not be limited to: a historic structure report for a cultural institution or public building; a cultural landscape report for an Olmsted-designed park; or a cultural resource survey of a downtown or residential neighborhood.

    In 2015, the Preservation League especially encourages projects that advance the preservation of neighborhoods and downtowns that qualify for the NYS Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit; continue the use of historic public buildings for cultural and artistic purposes; identify and protect buildings and cultural landscapes at risk due to technological, transportation and energy developments;

and preserve architecture and landscapes designed after World War II.The Preservation League of New York State launched the Technical Assistance Grant (TAG) program in 2012 to support discrete projects that preserve New York States cultural and historic resources. Not-for-profit arts/cultural groups and municipalities managing arts/cultural facilities are encouraged to apply. The applicant group may apply for short-term, standalone projects that advance the preservation of historic sites, museums, opera houses and theaters, arts facilities and other culturally important institutions that are located in historic buildings and structures that are open to the public. These professional studies include: building conditions surveys, engineering/structural analyses, feasibility/reuse studies and specialized building conservation studies. Preparation of architectural plans and specifications are not eligible.

Grant amounts will not exceed $3,000 and the total cost of the applicants project may not exceed $3,500. Each applicant must provide $500 toward the total project cost.

The Preserve New York Grant and Technical Assistance Grant programs are made possible through funding from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

For a list of previous grant recipients, visit the Leagues website at www.preservenys.org. Locally, the Village of Holley received a $5,000 Preserve New York grant to support the cost of a Historic District nomination of some 40 properties located on and near Holleys Public Square.

GreeceNewsNY.com - Retail Business of the Month

    Interior Expressionsby Kristina Gabalski

Barbara Miller is not exaggerating when she says her business Interior Expressions by Design has everything to make your house a home.

The inviting shop located at 1100 Long Pond Road (Suite 106) north of Ridge Road, is filled with an amazing selection of furniture, home decor, seasonal items, lighting including candles fashion accessories and gifts.

Barb has been at her current location for three years, but that short time belies her decades of experience in the retail industry. I managed The Apple Tree Gift Shop in Brockport, Barb says, noting she has worked in retail for 35 years. Barb did a little bit of everything for The Apple Tree buying, displays, selling and when it closed, she enjoyed being a grandma full time. But the retail world still beckoned.

Her years of experience had put her in touch with vendors and she also continued to be in touch with former customers. With the support of her husband, Barb ventured into her own business with Interior Expressions nine years ago.

Once a retailer, always a retailer, she says. The business was first housed in the craft/antique co-op in Hilton. Barb started with one little booth and the business grew. Moving to her current location was the next logical step, she says.

Barb loves her Greece location in a small plaza just off busy Route 104. The plaza has lots of architectural charm and attractive landscaping the perfect setting for the offerings of her shop.

The first impression when entering the store is one of cozy, country furnishings and decorative accessories. Closer inspection reveals there is something for almost every taste from primitive to traditional to contemporary. The variety of merchandise is amazing and captivating from sofas to earrings and large wooden hutches to funky change purses.

You have to have a mix to appeal to a lot of different tastes, Barb says. She recalls one customer who came in and at first glance, thought the stores offerings were not to her taste. After browsing, she changed her mind and went home with hundreds of dollars in merchandise.

Barb says new customers visit every day. The business has grown, she says. Ive been blessed that way. A lot of businesses are struggling, especially in retail.

She is particularly proud of her faux floral offerings which change to match the seasons and which are different from those found in chain craft stores. Also available are a wide range of seasonal merchandise and garden-related items.

The furniture Barb offers is all made in the USA some by Amish craftsmen and upholstered pieces by Hallagan

Fine Furniture, which has been manufacturing in nearby Newark, NY for more than 110 years. Hallagan offers hundreds of fabric and frame choices including contemporary.

Barb explains her success is most likely due to making customer service a priority. She welcomes every customer to the store and is always ready to offer friendly advice when its needed. Its the rapport you build with the customer, making them feel special, Barb says. Every customer I have is special. Im grateful for every purchase.

She also makes an effort to give back to the community, particularly during Small Business Saturday when a portion of her sales go to the Mission Share Outreach Center in Greece.

Her store is also getting some national attention via a trade publication. Barb and Interior Expressions by Design are featured in the November 2014 issue of Gifts and Decorative Accessories as one of the publications 25 Gifted Retailers 2014. Im really honored by the recognition, Barb says. She also is quick to point out, If not for my husband Jim, this dream would not be a reality.

Interior Expressions by Design is open Tuesday Saturday from 10 a.m. 5:30 p.m., Thursday evenings until 8. Closing the store on Sunday and Monday gives Barb time with her family (she has grandchildren and great-grandchildren) and also time to re-charge.

Im fresh on Tuesday morning for another week, she says. Fortunately for Barb, whether shes at her house with family or at her warm and welcoming store, shes always close to home.

Staying SafeMeet Eva Salinas - Victims Assistance Coordinator for the Greece Police Department

by Tami RacoOver 20 years ago the Greece Police Department began

their first Victims Assistance Program. Eva Salinas was hired to trail blaze this new department for Greece as the Victim and Witness Coordinator. Eva came to the department in a civilian capacity with an education in Psychology and Criminal Justice. The department was established to help support victims and witnesses who are going through difficult times. The Victim Assistance program responds to calls from crime victims. This department was established to meet the needs of victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other violent and non-violent crimes to:

Provide emotional support, advocacy, crisis intervention, and services referrals Help victims understand their rights and options Inform victims about the community resources and referral assistance available Support through the Criminal and Family Court Process Case Status information assistance Property Recovery Assistance

Eva was hired to work directly to support victims of various types of crimes, but over the past two decades

most of her caseload is on domestic violence. Eva has an open door policy to any victim. She offers guidance and direction to help represent the victim. Her services range from accompanying victims to court hearings, providing information on laws and rights, acting as a liaison between the law enforcement, DA and victim, referrals to programs that offer financial assistance such as compensation programs that help with lost wages, medical expenses, counseling, funeral expenses, essential personal property, job rehabilitation, moving expenses and crime scene clean up. She can also provide referrals to governmental social service programs and offers access to a large resource of local non profit agencies that help further support victims of Domestic Violence and other crimes.

Domestic Violence happens to 1 out of 4 women and is the leading cause to injury to women, and the third leading cause of homelessness to women. The Victim Assistance Program at the Greece Police Department is dedicated to helping victims maintain their dignity and quality of life through their healing process and transition to a safer life.

In addition to the services Eva offers, Greece Police Chief Patrick Phelan is also on the front line of fighting domestic violence and other crimes. Phelan and Salinas both actively participate in the Rochester/Monroe County Domestic Violence Consortium. This consortium is a coordinated community response to domestic violence which seeks to keep victims safe and hold offenders accountable. It also helps to drive legislative initiatives to give system wide supportive tools to achieve that goal. In the past five years some very positive changes have occurred in domestic violence laws that help give police more tools to stop repeat offenders and protect the victims. The support of the Chiefs active role against domestic violence, combined with the Victims Assistance Program and Evas help, provides the Greece community with many resources to help victims.

According to the Sergeant Jared Rene, The Town of Greece Police Department Victim Assistance Program (GPDVAP) provides supportive services to victims of a crime. Many victims of a crime face a painful physical, psychological and financial recovery period. If you, or someone you know is a victim of a crime, we want to offer you our assistance. Rene also states Eva is a valued member of the Greece Police Department and an experienced Victims Assistance Coordinator. She provides a vital resource to members of the Greece community who have become victims of crime and works in cooperation with our policemen and women to provide the highest quality of police service for the victim. We are very thankful for her and for her dedicated years of service to the Greece community and the Greece Police Department.

For more information on the Victims Assistance Program in Greece contact Eva Salinas at 585-720-0822 or email her at [email protected]

The History of Uncle Sam Exhibit at the Greece Historical Society Museum

Uncle Sam (initials U.S.) is a common, national personification of the American Government. Depicted as an elderly man with white hair and a goatee, wearing a top hat with stars and stripes, a blue tail coat and red and white striped trousers, the image of Uncle Sam came into use during the War of 1812, but is mentioned as early as 1775 in the original Yankee Doodle lyrics.

The figure of Uncle Sam has been used by people crossing the whole spectrum of politicsto rally the country when under attack, to invoke patriotism, to represent Big Brother or to decry overseas aggression.

The newest exhibit at the Greece Historical Museum tells how the national characterization of Uncle Sam originated, and examines the many and varied illustrated posters of him through the years.

Included in the display are works by numerous artists who have captured the image of Uncle Sam as the embodiment of all things American.

The History of Uncle Sam exhibit is on display through March 22, 2015 at the Greece Historical Society Museum, 595 Long Pond Road, Greece. The museum is open Sundays 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. or by appointment.

    Visit www.greecehistoricalsociety.net for more information.

James Montgomery Flagg, a New York born fine artist and painter, is best remembered for his political posters. He offered his services to the U.S. government during World War II and produced many patriotic posters. This poster was used to recruit volunteers for the American Red Cross.

GreeceNewsNY.com - Service Business of the Month

Benuccis Italian Ristorante Wine Bar Pizzeriaby Barbara Burke

Its been just one year since owner Peter Stamatis opened his restaurant, Benuccis at 102 Greece Ridge Center Drive at The Mall At Greece Ridge. Peters history in the restaurant business goes back for many years in his, and his familys lives.

Forty years ago my parents Anthony and Zoe Stamatis bought an Italian Restaurant on Monroe Avenue in the city of Rochester N.Y. We are Greek, but my dad always wanted to own an Italian restaurant. They later owned and operated Zoes in Perinton and when I was 21 years old, I opened a Zoes in Marketplace Mall, Peter says.

Peter later moved his restaurant to Pittsford Plaza with a totally different concept and look. I wanted a more upscale city style feel. I was first in Rochester to have an open kitchen, and one of the first to have a wood burning pizza oven, he says.

When the Wilmorite Corporation, owners of Pittsford Plaza and The Mall at Greece Ridge were expanding in Greece and looking for an Italian Restaurant, they asked Peter to open a second Benuccis in their new restaurant wing. It really was a great opportunity for me, Peter says.

Benuccis passion for Italian food, bursting with flavors from all regions of Italy, is evident in the atmosphere, aromas and flavors experienced while dining.

Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The extensive menu includes house made Soups, Salads, Pasta, Paninis, Pizza and a selection of Italian Lunch Combos.

The dinner menu features a large and varied selection of Italian favorites with a Tuscan flair including Antipasti, Pizza, Italian Specialities, Beef, Chicken and Seafood Entrees and Pasta. The house signature dish is Pasta Benucci, spinach, sun dried tomatoes, garlic, black olives, and artichokes, over linguine with a light marinara sauce and feta cheese.

Benuccis also has an extensive Gluten Free menu for both lunch and dinner. We use Trader Joes gluten free penne in our gluten free pasta dishes. It has been well received by our customers, Peter says.

All of Benuccis sauces and salad dressings are made fresh in house and are gluten free.

Peter makes the restaurant desserts himself. House signature dessert is Tiramisu, a traditional layered Italian dessert made with ladyfingers, expresso, mascarpone cheese and cocoa. Ive been told that ours is the best in Rochester, Peter says.

Benuccis Wine Bar is quickly becoming an area favorite with over 30 different wines from Italy available by the glass. Benuccis hosts Happy Hour from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday thru Friday, and a late night Happy Hour on Friday and Saturday from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Specials on select appetizers, pizzas, wine, beer and cocktails are available during Happy Hour.

Dinner can be enjoyed at the wine bar or in the relaxing dining room where family style dining is available and becoming a very popular style of serving meals.

Benuccis recently opened The Tuscan Room

which seats 80 people and can be reserved for family parties, wedding and baby showers, holiday parties, funerals, intimate receptions, and business meetings. The room has a full bar and audio and visual equipment for business meetings and seminars. We brought in a local artist who painted a mural with scenes of Tuscany on the wall. It really is a warm and inviting room for any special occasion, Peter says.

    Benuccis is open Monday thru Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 11:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

For more information call 585-227-3031 or visit www.benuccis.com to view the complete menu and details.

Pictured are Benuccis staff members and owner, left to right, Steven Ward, Head Chef, Peter Stamatis, Owner, and Elizabeth Altieri, Manager. Not available for photo, Christine Wright, Manager.

Benuccis recently opened the Tuscan Room which seats 80 people and has a full bar. Available for parties, family gatherings, business meetings and seminars, the room has a mural of Tuscany painted by a local artist, which creates a warm and friendly feel for any occasion.
