Summer is in full swing and would not be complete with out a trip to enjoy the outdoors with live music, good food, drinks and friends at the second annual Bands at Barnard Concert Series held at Barnard Exempts Fireman’s Field, 3084 Dewey Avenue, Greece.

Every Wednesday night thru August 19, 2015, you’ll find some amazing talent from our local music scene.

Gates open at 5PM and the event is over by 10PM. The cost is a $5 donation which the proceeds go to the

Barnard Fire Department. All shows are for 21 and over. Beer, wine and soda are

available and the Food Rodeo Trucks will also be at each event.

Supervisor Reilich officially cut the ribbon for the brand new “Wild Over Water Zone” Splash Park on July 2, 2015.

With a zoo theme, and several different areas for kids to ex-plore, this much anticipated project is sure to become a fixture in the town.

“Wild Over Water Zone” is the largest of its kind in the region, and is free for all Greece residents to enjoy. Resident wristbands for entry may be picked up at the Community & Senior Center.

The Second Annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration in the Town of Greece saw thousands of attendees flock to Town Hall for the day’s festivities. Kicking off the day with the 5K Freedom Run and the Scooby Stars and Stripes Fun Run, our largest crowd yet assembled to participate in this year’s event. Later in the afternoon, bouncy houses, face painting, and games were available for kids and families to enjoy. As the headlining performance by John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band closed out the stage, a massive fireworks display took place over the Town Court building. We are happy to continue to bring this event to Greece using no taxpayer dollars. Our top sponsors, which include Wegmans, New York State Fence, and Bob Johnson Chevrolet, helped make the event possible this year.

The “Wild Over Water” Zone officially opened in July. The largest splash park of its kind in the region, the WOW Zone is already a huge hit in the community. Entry is free for residents, and $5 for out of town visitors. For more information on how to obtain a wristband for this park, please contact the Community & Senior Center at 723-2425.

Coming up on August 4th will be National Night Out. For the first time, we will be hosting this at Town Hall campus. Food trucks will be on hand to serve up dinner while the Greece Police Department and other local organizations will be hosting safety and anti-bullying demonstrations.

On August 8th, I Dig This Town will also be held. The Public Works Department will be setting up trucks and equipment for kids to explore and play. Face painting and other activities will be available as well. They took their time with the details that make all the difference in how the finished installation looks and performs. We will be using Christie Carpets again for the other rooms in our home.

I highly recommend Christie Carpets Inc. They are very professional, prompt, reasonable and can be trusted with all your carpet needs. Their products are of high quality and their service is superb.

They’re just very lovely people, they’re very professional, they’re not pushy. She actually created the problem, but they came back and fixed it with no charge. They’re just great people. The price was very reasonable. They sell a good product, they’ve got everything available, and it’s certainly not overpriced.

Carpets purchased/installed for living room, 3 bedrooms and hallway. This was for my mother’s home. Christie Carpets did an excellent job, provided quality carpets for the price. Their service and attention to details was excellent. The installation crew were the best.

We needed to replace carpets in our mom’s home. Christie Carpets offered the best deal and service. They even moved the furniture around for us during the installation process. 2nd Annual Walk for WaterOn Friday, June 19, 2015, Greece Athena Middle School hosted

their 2nd Annual Walk for Water to support the Rochester-based non-profit organization Water for South Sudan. Salva Dut, a for-mer “Lost Boy” (or Walking Boy) of Sudan founded the NPO in 2005 to drill wells in his home country, bringing clean, life-saving water to his people. Since then, over 250 wells have been drilled by his organization.

Athena Cares, a student service group, hosted the event, and welcomed students from Greece Athena, Maple Hill Middle School (near Albany), and Watkins Glen High School, (which raised enough money this school year to fund an entire well). Salva was guest-of-honor at the event, walking with the students and speaking to them about the power of helping others. To-gether, the walk raised over $3,200 for the cause.

Greece Library Card Partnership with Local Businesses

September is National Library Card Sign-up Month and Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich invites local businesses to join with him in promoting all of the great resources available at the Greece Public Library. The Greece Library Card Partnership is an opportunity for Greece businesses to be listed as a partner on a brochure that will be distrib-uted to library visitors at both branches of the Greece Pub-lic Library during the month of September. When library cardholders visit a participating business, they will be eli-gible to receive a benefit (pre-determined by the business) when they present their library card. The benefit could be dollars (or a percentage) off a purchase or a discount on a specific item. It could be a free promotional item with the business’ logo. Greece Marching Band (GMB) in the CommunityDid you know that Greece has a Marching Band?

Why yes we do! The Greece Blue Knights Marching Band (GMB) has existed as a music program in Greece Central School District (GCSD) since 2006 and is currently under

the leadership of Mr. Robert Schreib and assistant director Bradley Coudriet.

The Greece Marching Band is a competitive performance ensemble that includes students in grades 6 – 12 from all Greece Central School District middle and high schools. GMB performs in local parades in the spring, competes in field band competitions in the fall, and represents GCSD at the NY State Field Band Competition at the Syracuse Carri-er Dome every October. GMB also runs a winter colorguard program under the leadership of instructor Aimee Sevor.

grades 3-5 called GMB Junior Knights. The Junior Knights program is focused on supporting GCSD music programs by giving kids an introduction to music and performance in the form of marching band.

GMB has a staff of music and colorguard professionals who have been in such organizations as the White Sa-bers Drum & Bugle Corps (2014 DCA Class A Champions), Downbeat Percussion, Empire Statesmen, and the Roches-ter Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps.

GMB and the GMB Junior Knights have been on the move and performing in several community events.

GMB performed in the Greece Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 25, 2015 and the Barnard parade on June 17, 2015. This was also the first parade and performance for the GMB Junior Knights.

On Wednesday, May 27, 2015, GMB was honored to par-ticipate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new wing of Golisano Children’s Hospital. Members of GMB and the Junior Knights led a mini-parade of Miracle Kids as part of the ceremony. Other local figures such as Tom Golisano, Danny Wegman, and Jennifer Johnson were there to help kickoff this event.

Meet the Greece Police K9 ~ Chip!by Tami Raco

Three year old Czech Shepherd named Chip is a highly trained Police Dog. The Greece Police Department purchased him with funding provided from drug seizures. He came to the Greece Police two years ago as a welcome addition to the department. Chip was bred from an elite line of Police and Military Dogs from Shallow Creek Kennels in Pennsylvania.

Chip was named after the fallen Webster Police Lieutenant and Volunteer West Webster Firefighter Michael Chiapperini who lost his life in the Christmas Eve ambush in 2012. Police dogs are traditionally named after a fallen officer or first responder.

Chip’s handler is Greece Police Officer Jeff Philips. Chip and Officer Phillips both underwent an extensive Police Dog training program. They spent three months training in patrol work which included building searches, suspect of crime tracking, tracking of missing and endangered persons, and aggression/protec-tion work for Handler and Officer protection. Chip and Jeff then underwent a one-month training program for narcotics. Chip is

trained to find heroin, meth, cocaine, ecstasy and marijuana. Chip and Jeff both successfully completed the 4-month program and passed all the testing. As a result of extensive training, Chip became certified as an Official K9 Police Dog.

Chip has proved to be a valuable asset to the department and he was recognized for his abilities and keen sense of smell. He was assessed by Jonni Joyce, a nationally recognized Master Trainer of Police and Search and Rescue Dogs, and was then rec-ommended to do something unique to most police dogs… Chip began scent work training to become one of the only certified police dogs in New York State for Human Remains Detection. He completed his training and passed his certification testing in Hu-man Remains Detection in June 2015. Chip is now recognized as the only Law Enforcement dog in New York State officially certi-fied for Human Remains, Patrol and Narcotics work.

On a typical day Chip patrols with Officer Phillips in a special K9 police car with a built in kennel made just for him. In addition to regular patrol work, Officer Phillips and Chip train twice a day to continue reinforcing Chip’s skills and abilities.

Chip has been successfully assisting the Greece Police in taking drugs off the street. During a special investigation assisting the U.S. Postal Police, Chip located 2 kilos of cocaine and 15 pounds of marijuana, preventing these drugs from hitting the streets.

Chip has also helped with mental health arrests, searching for missing people and even located a two year old girl that was missing in Greece a few years ago.

Officer Phillips says that Chip is a good hard working dog and when he is not on duty, he is relaxing at home with Officer Phil-lips, his wife and three children.

Greece Historical Society receives grant

The Greece Historical Society (GHS) recently received a $500 grant from the Greece Rotary. The funds will be used to provide for permanent retention of historical material, which will help the GHS and Town Historian’s office serve the public’s needs. GHS will now also be able to produce high quality scans of their photo collection, which will be used in their publications and presentations.

Lamplighter Restaurant Has New Ownerby Barbara Burke

It was a natural progression for Lisa Seifert to pur-chase Lamplighter Restaurant from founder Nick Cas-tronova who opened Lamplighter at 831 Fetzner Road, Greece in 1970. Lisa has worked there for the past 20 years, starting as a server and working her way up to General Manager.

“Nick told me he wanted to retire and the next step seemed natural, I would buy the restaurant and carry on the legacy. My future plans are for freshening up with a few renovations, and tweaking the menu to in-clude some fresh, new ideas, but I plan to keep the same concept that Nick created… with a concentra-tion on a casual atmosphere, and as always excellent customer service and high quality food. We are not just a “special occasion” restaurant, but an everyday place to go for cocktails and/or dinner, “ Lisa says.

Lamplighter Restaurant is known for their Conti-nental Cuisine including Steaks, Seafood and Italian Specialities. They feature German Specials during the months of March and September.

Long Pond Pub opened its doors over 40 years ago but has been owned and operated by Debbie and Dave Geer for the past 11 years. Dave managed the Pub for 8 years prior to purchasing it. The pub is open 7 days a week serv-ing lunch, dinner and drinks. The Geers have been actively working on remodeling the Pub as well as expanding the menu.

The Long Pond Pub is a perfect place to catch your favor-ite sporting events with 6 flat screen TVs including a 65” flat screen. The NFL and NHL is broadcasted and the “Sun-day Ticket”. In addition to the excellent location for sport-ing events they offer great drink specials during the events. Pizzeria Americana is a locally owned pizza shop located at 516 Long Pond Road in Greece. They have been making fresh, made-to-order pizzas, wings, hot subs, calzones, appetizers and their own version of “trash plates” for over 35 years.

Pizzeria Americana has been owned by Chris Seger for the past 1 1/2 years. Chris started out as a part time employee right after high school, and has worked there for 12 years. When the own-er was ready to retire, Chris was offered the business because he says, “I know the pizza shop inside and out and I know our

customers and what they want. There are many challenges and rewards to owning the business. As owner there is no time off, but the rewards far out weigh the challenges. It is great to personal-ly know the customers and to be

the one they come to with their comments about how good the food is that we prepare for them, and how much they love it.”

Pizzeria Americana’s food is prepared from original recipes that have stayed with the restaurant over the 35 years. “Most of our recipes have been here forever,” Chris says.

Pizzeria Americana uses Cup & Char Pepperoni, a thick cut pepperoni that when cooked on the pizza, the heat causes the pepperoni to shrink and cup enclosing the flavor, this process also keeps the pepperoni in place on the pizza. Cup & Char pep-peroni is a favorite of many pizza connoisseurs.

Pizzeria Americana offers traditional pizzas as well as a flavor-ful Gourmet Pizza Menu with offerings like Chicken Verde, Gar-bage Pie, Greek, Taco and Veggie Alfredo pizzas. Unique pizza toppings available include prosciutto, cauliflower, green olives, eggplant and fresh basil. They also shred their own mozzarella cheese for every pizza, and the dough is made fresh daily.

Their menu also includes regular or boneless chicken wings, calzones custom made with your choice of fillings and sauce, hot subs including the standard steak and meatball, and unique subs like chicken artichoke, chicken club and grilled ham. They also have an appetizer menu includ-ing fried mushrooms and cauli-flower, loaded cheesy fries (with bacon and meat hot sauce), and new items including hotzzarella sticks and breaded raviolis, both with choice of sauce.

Upon my return to Rochester I have been diving back into trying to find great food again. They even helped us out by being available to cater break-fast the day after the wedding when we discovered that our original breakfast venue was going to be too small - we contacted them in desperation two weeks prior to our wedding and they were very accommo-dating and made the whole process very simple! Bakery and Restaurant -- this place is a no frills good ole’ Italian eatery. Fresh Italian bread is instantly available when you sit down. The menu is full of classic dishes, but I need to comment about their steak sandwiches. BEST EVER. The steak is cut into tender chunks and the quality is top-notch. Service is friendly, attentive and quick. Food is delicious and portions are generous.

It is a little hidden gem in the plaza where Planet Fitness is on Spen-cerport Road.They have a take-out part of the restaurant where you can order pizza, wings, hot and cold subs, delicious fresh bread and some de-lightful sweets. Then they also have a sit down area where you can relax and have some homemade food. I know Rochester has their fair share of Italian restaurants, but that is why I am so picky with the ones I go to. If I am going to consume an abundant amount of pasta and sauce, I am only going to go to the place where I know it is the best! Giuseppe’s has, by far, some of the best sauce I have ever had! Sometimes red sauce can be very acidic, but not here, have no fear, you won’t need tums after you leave here. Also, their fried calamari is always seasoned perfectly and golden crispy. My mom usually orders about 10 to 12 lbs. of it for Christmas Eve!

From Our Family To Yours!Frank and Mary Presciutti opened their first pizzeria in 1976, just 6 months before they got married. Today, with two children and three wonderful grandchildren, they con-tinue to work together in the busi-ness. It’s not easy and Frank can’t understand why a 50 lb. bag of flour weighs so much more than it used to. Mary works very had keeping the kitchen clean and doing virtu-ally everything else at the same time. If you ask Frank what makes Russo’s different, this will be his answer. We are most always there during busy hours, we still make our own dough and sauce, we use the best and most costly ingredients, our crew is one of the best, and at this point, we are prob-ably the most experienced and most traditional in the business.
