Greece Public Library Offers iPads for Public Use

On Friday, March 6, 2015, Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich presided over the unveiling of a new iPad station at the Greece Public Library.

The station consists of 4 iPads housed in Bouncepad flexible stands in the adult reading area of the library.

Each iPad is loaded with a variety of news apps including the Associated Press, Wall Street Journal and New York Times. Informational apps for checking stock market values, weather forecasts, sports scores and more are also avail-able.

“One of our priorities at the library this year is to increase ac-cess to the online world for our residents. The iPad kiosk station accomplishes this, and compli-ments the 38 public access desk-top computers already available at the Main Branch. Additionally, I am pleased to say that Greece is the first town in Monroe County to offer this service to residents,” Reilich said.

Library Board of Trustees member Eugene Welch (left) and Greece Deputy Supervisor Mi-chelle Marini (right) check out the new iPad station.Greece Public Library Director Cassie Guth-

Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting of Blue Ridge Grill

Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich attended the Grand Opening of the Blue Ridge Grill, 3400 West Ridge Road., Greece.

The inside of the establishment has undergone many updates and renovations to accommodate visitors. The Blue Ridge Grill was formerly the home of the Greece Ridge Family Restaurant. Also on hand to help welcome in the new owners was Monroe County Clerk Cheryl Dinolfo, Greece Town Board member Diana Christodaro, Deputy

Supervisor Michelle Marini, and Greece Chamber President Sarah Lentini.

“As a lifelong resident of Greece, I have dined at this location many times. The new owners and staff at Blue Ridge Grill are extremely accommodating and friendly and I wish them all the best of luck in this new venture,” Reilich said.

14 GreeceNewsNY.com April 2015From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich

We are finally on the way to putting this historically tough winter season behind us. Unfortunately, the effects of this record snowfall will stretch into the spring as fields may become flooded delaying the start of many sports seasons. However, the Town of Greece has a lot to look forward to in the coming months.

The pavilion will be fully operational and ready for use in time for the first concert in the Concerts at the Hall series. The kick off concert will be held on June 14th, and will include a tribute to the music of Elvis and comes at no cost to the public. Other concerts in this series include Josie Waverly and Beatlemagic.

The splash park being built at Town Hall will also become available for use by the middle of June. Families will no longer have to travel to Ogden or Webster to have access to these activities for their kids. Located conveniently right next to the pavilion, folks will be able to enjoy the splash park will enjoying summer concerts and other events.

Over at the main branch of the library, Director Cassie Guthrie and I helped unveil the brand new iPad bar. The first of its kind in Monroe County, this area will allow residents to browse ebooks, online periodicals, and connect to the internet. One of our priorities at the library this year is to increase access to the online world for our residents. The iPad kiosk station accomplishes this, and compliments the 38 public access desktop computers already available at the Main Branch.

I hope that residents will take advantage that all that the Town of Greece has to offer in the coming months. As always, should you have any town related issues please feel free to contact my office at 225-2000.

The Best Retirement is an Active One!by Tami Mungenast, Personal Trainer

Most physicians will agree that the prescription for a healthier retirement is exercise! Exercise and regular physical activity protects seniors from declining health and can add years of enjoyment to your life.

Moderate exercise can help mature adults live longer by controlling blood pressure, maintaining healthy body weight, healthy lipid levels, improve cardiovascular function, and reduce heart attack and stroke risks. It also helps improve balance, strength and fights osteoporosis. This all reduces risks for injury. Regular physical activity can also improve digestion, controls blood sugar and boosts the immune system as well as reduces the risks for certain kinds of cancer.

A well rounded exercise program for seniors should include cardiovascular exercise as well as muscle conditioning and flexibility exercises. Many fitness centers and town recreation departments offer classes specifically designed for aging adults. In many cases health insurance can help pay for some, if not all, of the class fees. Silver Sneakers is a very popular program in the Rochester area and also includes social opportunities in addition to a well-structured senior fitness program.

Here are some helpful tips if you are beginning your own exercise program. Always consult with your physician before you begin any type of exercise.

Cardiovascular: The best type of cardio exercise for seniors is low impact. Walking, swimming and cycling are great. Begin with 15-20 minutes and slowly build up to 30 minutes per day.

Muscle conditioning:Strengthening exercises such as lifting lightweights help maintain your muscle mass and foster good bone health. Research indicates that adults lose up to a half a pound a year of vital muscle tissue beginning in their late 40’s and early 50’s. Weight training can prevent this and increase lean muscle. Using light dumb bells, resistance bands or resistance machines at a fitness gym can help. Begin with one set of 15 repetitions hitting all the major muscle groups 2-3 times per week. Then slowly increase to 2 sets of 15 of each exercise.

Flexibility: End each workout with stretching exercises to help maintain your mobility and range of motion. Hold each stretch for 10-15 seconds and do not bounce while holding. Stretching can be done every day and will help decrease risk for injury.

Exercise and regular activity will help you enjoy your retirement years by feeling better and giving you more energy to stay active. The best type of exercise is to find what you most enjoy. Favorites among many seniors are yoga, Pilates, square dancing, walking, or senior exercise classes. Take some time to experiment with various types of programs and see what you like the best!

Healthy Highway is an ongoing program in the Greece Elementary schools that helps teach kids about healthy nu-trition and active lifestyles. The program was designed by Physical Education Specialist Wendy Cooper, to empower children to make healthy choices in their diet and lifestyle.

On January 30, 2015, an assembly took place at the Eng-lish Village School to kick off the fun and positive partner-

ship of the Healthy Highway Program between the students and the Greece Police officers. The goal of this combined effort is to increase connectivity of the community out-reach of the Greece Police Department and the district’s elementary school students, by uniting both the students and officers with commitments to healthy living. Officers will come in, often during lunchtime and at special assem-blies, to discuss why it is so important that they keep their

Students, Gage P., 6, Aiden H., 6, and Mady T., 5, pose with Greece Police Officers, Sergeant Jared René (left) and Officer Todd Gumaer (kneeling right), in front of the promise board.

“engines strong” with healthy choices. Regular informal visits will take place during lunchtime, where the Police of-ficers will eat and chat with the kids, as well as fun assem-blies and in-school challenges.

During the week of March 9, 2015, the kids went head to head with Officer Todd Gumaer, Officer Eric Hughes and Sgt. Jared René on a 500 Healthy Choice Challenge. The challenge will conclude with a celebration that will take place as the officers serve foods named after them. In April, a special visit from the police dog “Chip” will take place so that the students can see how important it is for Chip to stay healthy too.

The program has been received with a lot of enthusiasm and many smiles from the children. Wendy Cooper says that she is asked frequently when the Greece Police Of-ficers will be coming back.

Sergeant Jared René of the Community Services Division of the Greece Police Department felt strongly about work-ing with Wendy Cooper on the Healthy Highway program because he felt working with the younger children in the community made sense. He liked the interactive format of the program and the ability to reach young children with regular dialogue.

René says, “One of our goals in Greece Police Depart-ment Community Services, is to begin a positive relation-

ship with children in the Greece community at an early age. Healthy Highway gives us this opportunity and bridg-es the gap between the police world and elementary aged school children. As policemen and women, we know the importance of healthy eating, exercise and nutrition. These areas of our lifestyles affect our health and our ability to perform our jobs at a high level. We want to impress these concepts on the kids through our examples, interactions and influence, so that we may foster positive relationships with the children and most significantly teach them about the importance of daily healthy choices.”

This program is being launched at English Village Ele-mentary School as a pilot program, and both the school and the Greece Police are looking forward to the program growing.

David Peasley, owner of Green Hut LLC, a specialty healthy foods and products store, located at 2139 North Union Street, Spencerport, didn’t plan to own a health and wellness store when he opened four years ago, he was planning a home improvement store. “I started out selling green home improvement items, light bulbs, natural clean-ing products and organic personal care items. I listened to customers and their needs and suggestions, and it has grown into our store today,” David said.

Four years later the store has greatly expanded and offers organic, natural, healthy foods, grocery items, bulk foods, supplements, personal care and environmentally friendly household items.

Locally sourced food products from over 15 different area businesses that includes Lee Farms Organic Ground Beef and select cuts. Lee Farms beef is 100% grass fed, cer-tified organic, dry aged beef that is raised the old fashioned way, all natural, in grass pastures, and never barn confined. There are no chemicals, hormones, antibiotics, or GMO, genetically modified feeds used in raising their beef. They also carry Lee Farms organic free range eggs.

There are over 200 local food items throughout the store and are all marked with a “Local” sticker. Items come from Piggery Pork, Gluten Free baked goods from Donna Marie’s Bakery including breads, cookies, muffins and rolls, Livings-ton County Gluten Free Pizza, Doan’s honey and spread, Joe Bean Coffee and Pittsford Farms Dairy milk products and ice cream. “Pittsford Farms milk is one of our best sell-ing products, we have people come in for it everyday,” Da-vid says.

They stock over 15 brands of nutritional supplements, and will special order if they don’t have it in stock. Future plans include adding two new lines of supplements. “We grow as we see what is needed, we add products to the store because of customer requests. St. John the Evangelist Parish in Greece Celebrates 150 YearsThis year marks the 150th anniversary of the founding

of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Parish in Greece. The Rev. John Maurice, a missionary priest from France, and 20 German, Dutch, and Irish families formed the orig-inal parish in a former tavern in 1865. The congregation built the stone church that still stands on Ridge Road in 1875, and moved to the modern James Johnson-designed church in 1964.

Several special programs are planned for the coming year including a Mass of Celebration and Gala Luncheon on Sunday, May 17, 2015. Rochester’s Most Reverend Bishop Salvatore Matano will celebrate the 150th Anniver-sary Mass at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Church, 2400 West Ridge Road. A buffet luncheon will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the Plantation Party House, 1875 North Union Street, Spencer-port. All current and former members of the parish, as well as members of the Greece and Rochester community are invited to this special celebration.

The luncheon will include the unveiling of the contents of the former St. John the Evangelist School cornerstone, which was saved when the school was demolished last fall. Reservations for the gala luncheon are required and due by April 30. Cost is $25 per person. Checks can be made pay-able to: St. John the Evangelist Church, with “Anniversary Gala” in the check memo, and mailed to: St. John the Evan-gelist, 2400 West Ridge Road, Rochester, NY 14626. Please include the names of those attending and a contact phone number. Reservations can also be placed in the collection basket at Mass or dropped off at the parish office.

In addition to the Mass of celebration and gala in May, during the month of April, St. John’s is planning two free

events that are open to the public.Parishioners and friends are welcome to bring their Eas-

ter baskets to church on Saturday, April 4 at noon for the Blessing of Easter Foods. In this traditional European cus-tom, food that is blessed on Holy Saturday will be part of the Easter Sunday meal.

The parish is also planning an Afternoon of Sacred Hymns on Sunday, April 19 at 2 p.m. in the church. This musical event will feature the heavenly voices of St. John’s choir. Other choirs from the area have also been invited to per-form hymns of their choice. Refreshments will follow.

Current Church: Sharing the past, envisioning the future … Over the years the population of Greece and St. John’s parish grew. The original 20 families of 1865 grew to 400 in 1949 and 1500 in 1959. In May 1963, ground breaking ceremonies were held for a new church building, designed by Rochester architect James Johnson. The first mass in the new church was held fifty years ago in Novem-ber 1964. Photo by Bill Sauers.

Tavern: First place of worship … In 1865, Rev. John Maurice, who was also responsible for building Our Mother of Sorrows church in Greece and founding Holy Cross parish in Charlotte, purchased the old Rowe Tavern on Ridge Road to be used as the first church for St. John the Evangelist. Twenty families, consisting mostly of Ger-man, Dutch, and Irish immigrant farmers and laborers, formed the original parish family. The building was later moved across the road and became the Falls Hotel.

Stone Church: Parish grows … Ten years after its founding, the parish had grown to 55 families. A new church, designed by Andrew Jackson War-ner and constructed of Medina sandstone, was dedicated by Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid, first bishop of Roch-ester, on September 15, 1875. This church, which still stands on West Ridge Road across from Greece Ridge Mall,

served the parish community for nearly 90 years.

St. Lawrence Elementary School studentscelebrated Read Across America Day

This year’s theme was “Fairy Tales”. Students K-6 dressed up as their favorite fairytale characters and participated in many reading activities throughout the day.

Some of those activities included “Mystery Reader” where students were grouped heterogeneously to listen to stories; and Partner Reading where older students paired up with younger students to read books. Principal Frank Arvizzigno read a book to each of the classes.

Students also participated for the fourth year in Read the Most From Coast to Coast sponsored by Renaissance Learning. This involves reading books and taking computerized quizzes using Accelerated Reader. Students took quizzes throughout the

day demolishing the school record (set last year at 857) by passing 1403 quizzes!

Channel 13 News Anchor Jennifer Johnson was on hand to read to the whole school later in the day. Our superintendent Anthony Cook and Associate Superintendent Jona Wright also joined us for this fun event.

R&K Zarpentine Bakery and Farm Market

GreeceNewsNY.com - Retail Business of the Month

by Barbara BurkeFor three years now brother and

sister Rob Zarpentine and Kim Francis have operated their farm market, R&K Zarpentine Bakery and Farm Market at Mayer’s Lake Ontario Winery, 1593 Hamlin Parma Town-line Road in Hilton.

The siblings have been in the farm market business for over 15 years and both have different strengths that they bring to their business. “My strengths are customer service and management, and Rob’s strengths are in the apples side of the business and the bakery,” Kim Francis says.

Both Rob and Kim are bakers, and together share the de-licious task of preparing fresh baked goods for their bakery every morning. “The bakery is a large part of our business, our baking skills are passed down to us from our mother,” Kim says.

The bakery carries a wide variety of fresh baked delica-cies including Cider Fry Cakes, Apple Fritters, Pies, Breads, Cookies, Brownies, Muffins, Turnovers, Cinnamon Rolls and more. There are over 17 varieties of pies available, and sev-eral varieties of No Sugar Pies. They also have Gluten-Free breads and muffins and will do special order gluten free cupcakes and cakes for any occasion. “Our cider fry cakes are our best seller and a customer favorite,” Kim says.

They have a very special and unique bakery item called “Mom’s Ollie Bollies.” Kim explains, “Ollie Bollies is an old German recipe that my Mom developed and that I perfect-ed for our bakery. It included walnuts, apples, raisins, is fried and glazed, and I can’t tell you what else because it is an unshared family recipe.”

Rob and Kim use as much locally sourced ingredients in their baked goods as possible. “We use everything we can from local farmers and businesses, we believe in support-ing other businesses in our communities,” Kim says.

R&K Zarpentine Farm Market also carries a wide selec-tion of locally sourced goods in their farm market store including seasonal fruits and vegetables from area farms, Maple Syrup, Honey, Yancey’s Fancy Cheese, Fruit and Veg-

gie Oils, Flour City Pasta, Guglielmo’s Pasta Sauce, “River-Rat” cheese, mustards, dips, jams and jellies. They also carry a line of Alpaca clothing from Northwoods Alpacas in Bergen, New York.

Another very successful part of R&K Zarpentine Bakery and Farm Market’s business is their Saturday Morning Pan-cake Breakfast.

Breakfast is served every Saturday between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. and includes “All you can Eat” Buckwheat Pancakes, served with real Maple Syrup, two freshly home-made sausage patties, homemade apple sauce and your choice of a beverage, coffee, tea, juice or milk. “Our pan-cake breakfast is popular and attendance is very good,” Kim says.

Truly a family business, Rob and Kim employ another lo-cal family mother and daughter team Deb Rieke and Sara Shaw as managers, and Deb’s daughter-in-law, Melissa Shaw, and Kevin Ferry at the farm market.

R&K Zarpentine Bakery and Farm Market is open Win-ter/Spring/Summer, Wednesday thru Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and during the Fall they are open everyday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
