LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

It started with a simple idea three and a half decades ago:

that neighbors and friends would rally to support each other in times of need and to extend that support with kindness and respect for the inherent dignity of every human being.

Back then, there was no long-range strategic plan; rather, just a“one-day-at-a-time” push to get food into the Food Bank and out again as quickly as possible to help feed individuals and families, many forced to struggle after the demise of the local steel industry. Initially, those individuals who started Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank couldn’t have known what the future might hold for their fledgling organization, but they did know one thing: their efforts were deeply rooted in commitment to others.

That commitment grew and it spread. Nurtured by compassion, the work of the Food Bank attracted many more dedicated staff, volunteers, partners and supporters. It’s a good thing, too. Despite everyone’s best efforts, the challenge of food insecurity in our community continues to grow. And it is changing. Today, there is no stereotype for a person who finds him- or herself in need of food at some time or another. Hunger can afflict anyone, regardless of age, sex, race, creed or even employment status, as recently we have seen an alarming increase in the number of employed people who are in need of food assistance.

Despite these challenges, because of the willingness of the community to donate, volunteer and speak out on our behalf and the behalf of those we serve, we are reaping a better tomorrow for all. Our mission drives us to feed people in need and mobilize our community to eliminate hunger.

DONATE Donations prepare the groundwork for success. With more than 360,000 people served annually, our community and its most vulnerable citizens are in need.

In 2014 we helped:

• 76,000 children• 92,000 seniors• 59,300 veterans

VOLUNTEER Volunteers provide the support to make the Food Bank a success. With more than 13,500 volunteer opportunities available throughout the year, individuals, families and groups can help us continue to grow our hunger-fighting community.

In 2014, volunteer highlights included:

• 28,491 hours sorting, inspecting and repacking grocery items at our warehouse repack facility

• 13,242 hours distributing produce directly to neighbors in need• 3,844 hours supporting community events and raising funds,

food and awareness

SPEAK OUTSpeaking out brings vibrancy and expression to the often silent problem of hunger. Our supporters are resilient, vocal and — most importantly — growing. We will not back down until the needs of our community are met.

In 2014 we were heard through:

• 72 people per day participating in social media• 369 speakers bureau events • 3,100 paper plate messages about childhood hunger

being collected for delivery to elected officials
