Heart attack predictors evaluatedCHICAGO, 30 April—

US medical researchersdetermined a person’scoronary artery calciumscore, together withtraditional risk factors, canbetter predict heartattacks. A coronary arterycalcium score is the resultof imaging that providespictures of calciumdeposits suggesting signsof atherosclerosis.

Traditional risk factorsare age, gender, tobaccouse, blood pressure,a n t i h y p e - r t e n s i v emedication use, cholesterol

levels and race/ethnicity.The Northwestern

University FeinbergSchool of Medicinescientists said theirfindings show, for the firsttime, that using a person’scoronary artery calciumscore in combination withtraditional risk factorsprovides a better predictionof heart attack than usingjust traditional predictors.

“Almost one-quarterof the people in the studywho had heart attackswere consideredintermediate risk based on

traditional risk factorsalone, but were consideredhigh risk once we includedtheir coronary arterycalcium score,” said Dr.Tamar Polonsky, leadauthor of the study.

The researchers saidthey predicted the risk offuture coronary heartdisease events in the 6,000volunteers in the studyusing two methods —traditional risk factorsalone and traditionalfactors plus coronaryartery calcium scores.

Supplements linked to less kidney functionLONDON, 30 April—

Those with diabeticnephropathy, kidneydisease caused bydiabetes, who took highdoses B vitamins had morekidney function decline,Canadian researcherssay.Dr Andrew A. Protein may help control insect pestsBALTIMORE, 30 April—

US researchers say theyhave identified a protein infruit flies that helps theflies detect noxiouschemicals and decide whatto eat and what to avoid.

Johns HopkinsUniversity scientists saidtheir discovery of theprotein TRPA1 in sensorycells on the “tongues” offruit flies raises thepossibility of a newmolecular target forcontrolling insect pests.

“We’re interested in

how TRPA1 and a wholefamily of so-called TRPchannels affect not just thesenses, like taste, but alsobehavior,” Professor CraigMontell, who led the study, said.

Montell said when histeam knocked out theTRPA1 sensor, thebehavior change — analteration in foodpreference — was stark.

“This is the first TRPchannel in insects thatresponds to a naturallyoccurring plant chemical

known as an anti-feedant,so now we have a target forfinding more effectivechemicals to protect plantsfrom destruction by insectpests,” Montell said.

“In the past, we wouldgive toxic chemotherapy

UMFCCI membersare to try…

(from page 1)Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister U

Thein Sein stressed the importance of peace andtranquility, economic objectives, skills, basic infra-structures and economic opportunities to build apeaceful and modern country. Therefore, the gov-ernment has built basic infrastructures for stabilityand prevalence of law and order in the country whilebuilding necessary economic infrastructures as partof efforts for creating the market oriented economicsystem on a right way, he said.

The private investment sector plays a majorrole in making efforts for all-round development ofthe country and making the country stand with othernations shoulder by shoulder. Therefore, to encour-age the private investment sector, the governmenthas taken measures for laying down economic poli-cies, rules and regulations that can boost the privateinvestment, he said. The booming of private busi-nesses represents the strong economy of the countryand development of the country as well. Therefore, the government has encouraged the private invest-ment sector as one of the infrastructures of the State,he added.

In accordance with the guidance of the Headof State, the Union of Myanmar Federation of Cham-bers of Commerce and Industry was established asa leading chamber to support the private businesssector, the state economy and all-round develop-ment of the country. Prime Minister U Thein Seinpraised the 19-year old federation for its achieve-ments as the federation, joining hands with thegovernment, could build economic infrastructureand environments, and could attract the nationalentrepreneurs to participate in building the infra-structures as well.

The number of the members of the federationhas reached 19,834 as 1339 more joint it this year, and the federation has cooperated with 59 brother-hood business associations.

The federation has conducted talks, work-shops and business matching for 23 times and send207 trainees abroad to participate in training courses, meetings and forums, and 779 members abroad toexhibit national pavilions at 20 exhibitions of thefederation. The Prime Minister also expressed hisdelight for the federation as it signed 71 Memoran-dums of Understanding with foreign business groups.

Prime Minister U Thein Sein also called forthe federation to play a major role in the 2010-2011fiscal year, the last year of the fourth 5-year shortterm plan of the 30-year long term plan, to achieve

the trade target of the fiscal year. In the fourth 5-yearshort term plan from the 2006-2007 fiscal year to the2010-2011 fiscal year, the government has targetedto meet the average growth rate of 12 percent peryear.

Increase in production has boosted the tradevolume. Production is related with trade, and thecooperative efforts of the government, farmers, in-dustrialists and traders have resulted in high tradevolume of the State, the Prime Minister said.

He continued to say that the global economiccrisis has hit the nations in the world, and thegovernment has realized that the country must over-come the crisis by itself. The steering of the govern-ment is necessary during the period of transition tomarket economy at such a time when the govern-ment has not yet built the balance of the economy.

Therefore, the government made arrangementsto minimize the loss and to boost efficiency afterassessing the global financial crisis from variousangles.

The Prime Minister also elaborated on thegovernment's measures to facilitate trade proce-dures, import and export business and import substi-tute good production and its role in reaching tradeagreements between governments, searching newmarkets, promoting maritime and border trade andencouraging partial trade activities.

While promoting regional and internationaleconomic cooperation, the nation will have to par-ticipate in the ASEAN free trade area in 2015. So inorder to face the challenges then, it is necessary toextend production of quality goods.

The government is not only building nationaleconomic infrastructures but also creating economicopportunities for national entrepreneurs. Encourage-ment is being given for industrial development byestablishing industrial zones in the strategic regionsand privatizing State-owned factories and workshops. In this age of globalization, it is important to improvethe economy in parallel with the international arenarelying on qualified human resources and modern, sound management rather than capitals, natural re-sources and unskilled workforce. The State on its partwill render necessary assistance and the entrepre-neurs are to create a skilled economic communityunder the leadership of the UMFCCI.

As the domestic market of the State is inprogress and stable condition, international eco-nomic forces are coming to make investments in thecountry. Economic entrepreneurs are to try to holdthe tremendous domestic market as well as focus onrural markets. Accepting the fact that the domesticmarket is fundamental and the foreign market is notto be neglected, it is necessary to ensure speedy

distribution of commodities to the consumers. Thisis why the government is systematically draftingrules and regulations on formation of brokerages.

Rice and beans and pulses companies arebeing established in states and divisions. There havenow been 31 rice companies, 24 beans and plusescompanies and 55 crops companies. Up to March2010, those companies rendered assistance to farm-ers. As a result, the production sector has improvedand the farmers as well as the local brokers havereaped benefits.

Today's natural disasters and climate changeare the economic challenges for the humanity, in-cluding economic entrepreneurs. In making plans toserve social and economic interests, every nationhas focused on food security as a priority policy.Nowadays, in the global food market, priority hasgiven to food security and clean, healthy food. So itis required to produce goods that are suited to themarket requirements. Therefore, the government, traders, brokers, associations, entrepreneurs and allresponsible persons from supply chain sector, are tomake efforts for ensuring food security with nation-alistic spirit.

Looking at the economic environment, if eachand every person seeks his own interest, the wholeenvironment will break down. So, individuals aswell as organizations need to have economic ethics.Only then, will the domestic market be stable andthe nation will be able to compete economicallywith the international community. In both nationaleconomy and international economy, trust is morevaluable than jewelries. Associations themselvesneed to follow economic ethics as lack of qualityproducts and promise can cause loss of trust ininternational trading. Economic ethics are impor-tant in international trade.

The government is building up a peaceful, modern and developed nation aspired by the na-tional people step by step. Free and fair electionswill be held soon. Therefore, merchants and indus-trialists under the leadership of the federation areurged to choose good people's representatives withconsideration and farsightedness.

In conclusion, all the members are to try tomake sure that their federation becomes a capableone in the national economic sector and remainas asan economic force on which the State relies.

Then, the Prime Minister and party and theUMFCCI President, CEC members and executivesposed for a documentary photo. The Prime Ministercordially greeted those present. Toyota sets up designquality division

TOKYO, 30 April—Toyota, its reputationbattered by global recalls, is setting up a newdivision devoted to feeding customer concernsinto the design process to improve quality, theautomaker said Friday.

Toyota Motor Corp, the world’s biggestautomaker, has been fighting to win back buyertrust after getting slapped with a $16.4 million fineby the US authorities for being slow in comingforward with defects.

The Japanese automaker, once reputed forquality, has recalled more than 8 million vehiclesaround the world since October.

Toyota Motor Corp said Kiyotaka Ise willhead the new Design Quality Innovation Division, set to start Saturday, and designed to more quicklyreflect “customer feedback in designs.” Iseformerly oversaw product and Lexus development.

Some of the production methods that have wonToyota worldwide praise for maintaining qualityhave to do with rank-and-file discipline andempowerment - ensuring that quality is maintainedin the factories.

But the recent recalls were not caused by suchproblems, but instead appear to center around designdefects that didn’t surface until users complained.
