Dr Samoon said this while reviewing san- itation measures being taken by SMC in the summer capital. He asked SMC to strictly follow the building permission rules and issue permissions strictly under the act. Dr Samoon called for proper disposal of solid waste in the Srinagar City and asked officials of SMC to find an alternative space for further disposal of waste in addition to Achan dumping site. He asked the Commissioner SMC Bashir Ahmad Khan to take concerted efforts to make Srinagar city clean and ensure hygien- ic atmosphere. Stressing on the need to segregate waste before its disposal, the Divisional Commis- sioner asked officials to distribute separate dustbins to the households for bio-degrad- able and non-biodegradable waste so that it makes segregation easy. The Divisional Commissioner directed the SMC to start sweeping and collecting garbage early in the morning to avoid incon- venience to people. On the occasion, Com- missioner SMC informed the Divisional Commissioner that there are 300 vacancies of sweepers in the corporation and same will be filled soon. Dr. Samoon also directed Commissioner SMC to conduct fortnightly meetings with the ward officers for effective functioning of the administration. He further directed SMC to launch special drive against encroach- ment of footpaths in the city. Expressing concern over the use of poly- thene in Kashmir, the Divisional Commis- sioner called for taking concrete measures to deal with the issue. He also asked SMC to make all the street lights functional and use energy saver led lights for street lights. Dr Samoon also interacted with ward officers during the meeting. PLANTATION DRIVE LAUNCHED IN CITY Education department ropes in NGO for rebuilding flood-hit schools SYED RIZWAN GEELANI Srinagar, Mar 1: The Educa- tion department has roped in an NGOs to rebuild the infra- structure in schools hit by the devastating floods in 2014 in the summer capital. Director School Educa- tion Kashmir (DSEK) Dr. Shah Faesal inaugurated single sto- ried two school buildings at Rajbagh and Jawahar Nagar built by Mumbai based NGO- Empathy Foundation— which works with local administra- tive bodies in rural and urban areas to build and improve existing infrastructure of school. One six roomed school building has been constructed for Government Boys Middle School (GBMS) Rajbagh in which the department has merged Government Middle School Kursoo as well. Another six roomed build- ing is for Government Boys Higher Secondary School (GBHSS) Jawahar Nagar here. According to Nausheen- coordinator of the Empathy Foundation for Kashmir, the two single storied school build- ings were constructed at the cost of Rs 1.10 crores. “We demolished the old structures which were declared unsafe after floods and built two build- ings for these two schools,” Nausheen said. “Our organization came to know about the devastation caused by the floods in valley and decided to extend their sup- port to education sector here and built these two buildings here,” Nausheen said, adding that the contract was given to a local contractor. The two buildings were thrown open for the school authorities at a time when the education department has only received Rs 5 crores against the estimated cost of Rs 90crore for restoration and renovation of flood-hit schools. The report received from the Srinagar Municipal Cor- poration, prima-facie reveals that a multi-storeyed building had been raised by the violator in contravention of Srinagar Master Plan and the provi- sions of The J&K Municipal Corporation Act, 2000, besides, no concrete measures seem to have been taken by the Authori- ties of SMC in order to stop the violator from constructing the building who has taken refuge of an order passed by The J&K Special Tribunal, showing the negligent and non-serious approach adopted by the offi- cers/officials of SMC Srinagar in the matter amounting to acts of omission and commission by the concerned public servants,” the statement said. “The State Vigilance Commis- sion while ensuring that strict action is taken against the offi- cers/officials of SMC Srinagar in the matter which has lead to gross violation of the Srinagar Master Plan and Municipal laws, has directed the Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation to submit action taken against all those involved by next date of hearing,” it added. The spokesman of the conglomer- ate said “police informed the Hurri- yat leaders that they can’t allow the screening of a documentary tilted “Children in Conflict Torn Kashmir” on March 2 at a local hotel here. Due to the objection raised by the administration for holding the screening, the Hurriyat has decid- ed to postpone the screening of the documentary. The maer was urgently taken up with the S.E Drainage who was directed to replace these lids with the fresh manhole cover lids where ever required in the city,” SMC spokesper- son said in a statement. NFSA implementation reviewed Srinagar, Mar 1: District Devel- opment Commissioner Srinagar Dr. Farooq Ahmad Lone, today chaired a meeting to review the implementation of National Food Security Act (NFSA). The meeting was aended by Additional District Development Commissioner, SDM and other concerned officers here. The meeting was informed that the NFSA will be imple- mented in the district from March 2016. During the meet- ing the DDC said the food act is a social welfare and reform oriented measure aimed at pro- viding highly subsidized food grains to the poor and marginal sections of the society. The DDC said people will get assured supply of ration right at their doorsteps in a hassle-free manner and a three-tier griev- ance redressal mechanism has been put in place. The meeting sought cooperation of people to correct the ration data base so that e-tickets can be distributed in a transparent and in a time bound manner. Srinagar, Mar 1: Traders of Sha- heed Gunj market on Tuesday observed shutdown against the district administration for "failing" to provide them flood relief. They alleged that adminis- tration has been forcing them to complete lengthy formalities. “Our flood relief cases are pending with the officials who are resorting to dilly dally tactics,” the aggrieved shopkeepers said. Srinagar, Mar 1: Shika- ra Workers Union Ghat number one on Tuesday staged protest at Dalgate against delay in compen- sation for losses suffered by them during devastat- ing floods in September 2014. Raising anti-government slogans, the aggrieved Shikara owners blocked road resulting in disruption in vehicular movement. “Government has failed to fulfill its promise of pro- viding compensation to us. Ironically, despite passing of over a year since floods, Government has left us to fend for ourselves,” they said. “During our meeting with Governor NN Vohra, he had passed directions to Commissioner Secretary Tourism to provide finan- cial assistance to the tune of Rs 50,000 to the affected shikara owners. However, we are yet to receive the relief,” they said. Srinagar, Mar 1: Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon accompanied by Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar Tuesday inaugurated plantation drive by planting a Deodar tree at Hariparbat, Srinagar. He also planted a tree at Shanker Achariya in Zabarwan hills. Besides, Director School Education Kashmir, Dr Shah Faesal, SDM Srinagar, Syed Muhammad Hanief Balkhi, Conservator Forests, DFO Urban, Range officers, NGO members and Volunteers were also present on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, the Divisional Commissioner stressed for concerted efforts to give Kashmir green cover by planting more and more trees so that pristine glory of Kashmir is restored besides environmental and ecological balance is protected and preserved. On the occasion, the Divisional Commissioner was informed that plantation drive has been started across Kashmir and about 20 lakh plants of different species will be planted in all the districts.
