DIPK 315 Sd/-Secretary, J&K Services Selection Board, Srinagar 003 PDP, NC, Cong hail 'huge' turnout Separatists felicitate people for poll 'boycott' Srinagar, May 7: Various sepa- ratist leaders and organizations have felicitated the people of North Kashmir for boycotting the polls held today. Thanking the people, the Hurriyat Conference (G) chair- man, Syed Ali Geelani said: “The Indian forces forced people of Tangdar, Uri, Gurez and Ban- dipora to vote but the people showed courage and stayed away from the election drama. The people of Sopore, Pattan, Langate, Sonawari, Palhalan, Sumbal, Hajan, Bandipora, Kupwara, Batagung and other major towns stayed away from the military operation. Major Ragu of 14-RR today once again came in civvies in Bandipora areas and threatened the locals to cast votes, but they resisted him by taking out a huge pro- cession and raising anti-India, anti-election and pro-freedom slogans,” said Geelani in a state- ment today. The United Jihad Council (UJC) chairman Syed Salah-ud- Din Wednesday said by boycot- ting the ‘so-called’ elections the people of Jammu Kashmir have put across a clear message that polls were in no way an alterna- tive to plebiscite. “Despite military opera- tions and SOG atrocities, majority of people stayed away from polls, clearly prov- ing that Kashmiris are a living nation, having courage and capacity to defeat any aggres- sor. The Indian leadership and their paid agents in Jammu Kashmir will read their defeat in the writings of wall,” the UJC spokesman Syed Sadaqat Hussain, in a statement today quoted Salah-ud-Din as having said,. Jammu Kashmir Libera- tion Front (JKLF) chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik, while thanking the people, said despite difficult conditions the boycott in Baramulla, Sopore, Pattan, Bandipora, Rafiabad and many other areas showed the love of masses for the free- dom movement. “North Kashmir, compris- ing mostly far flung hilly areas where every inch is covered and governed by Indian army, has overall boycotted the election drama,” said Yasin Malik in a stement. “This boycott shows elec- tions are no alternative to the right of self determination,” Malik added. Expressing satisfaction over the ‘rejection’ of polls by people, the Hurriyat Conference (M) spokesman, in a statement today, said, “Despite heavy mili- tary presence, restrictions and government-sponsored fear, the people stayed away from poll- ing especially in Pattan, Hajan, Sopore, Palhalan, Pattan, Baram- ulla, and Bandipora.” “Elections under Indian constitutional system are no substitute to pledges by the UN to the people of Jammu Kash- mir. Kashmiris will continue to espouse the cause of freedom till they get their right to self-deter- mination,” said the spokesman. Hurriyat Conference Jammu Kashmir (HCJK) senior leader Shabir Ahmad Shah, while expressing his pleasure over election boycott, said, “The day is not far when New Delhi’s oppres- sion in Kashmir will vanish.” Shah, in a statement today said: “People of valley for com- pletely boycotted the elections and defeated the designs of National Conference, Congress, PDP and other mainstream par- ties. The boycott of parliamen- tary elections is a rehearsal for upcoming assembly elections.” Congratulating the people, Jammu Kashmir Salvation Movement (JKSM) chairman Zaffar Akbar Bhat said, “Despite oppressive tactics like unde- clared curfew, heavy deployment of troops, curbs, restrictions and arrests, the people stayed away from the sham polls.” “Excluding war affected and heavy militarized areas of LoC, majority of the population residing in all other areas today showed their love for the ongoing freedom struggle and boycotted the polls,” said Zaffar in a state- ment today. Srinagar, May 7: Several main- stream leaders have thanked the people of North Kashmir for their huge participation in the polling process. Senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader and former deputy chief minister, Muzzafar Hussain Baig has thanked the people for voting in spite of heavy odds. In a statement, Baig, said: “We expect the people to repose faith in the electoral process to see end of their miseries.” He said the Parliamentary polls have laid a strong founda- tion for a larger change to be hap- pening in the state later this year. National Conference candi- date from Baramulla Parliamenta- ry seat, Sharif-ud-din Shariq, while thanking the people for exercising their right to vote, said: "The enthusiasm of the common-man in choosing his representatives is the indomitable spirit of democracy for which National Conference has rendered innumerable sacrifices and it is this very spirit that we salute,” Shariq said. NC spokesperson Junaid Azim Mattu also thanked people of Baramulla Parliamentary constit- uency for voting in large numbers. “NC is confident of a triumphant re-election from the Baramulla seat due to the ardent support of the people seen today; a final re- endorsement that would complete an expected repeat clean-sweep for NC in the Valley,” he said. Meanwhile, Pradesh Con- gress Committee (PCC) vice president and MLC Ghulam Nabi Monga Wednesday also thanked people of North Kashmir for voting in good numbers despite separatist poll boycott call. In a statement he said, “I con- gratulate the people of Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora districts for coming out in good numbers and exercising their franchise.” Monga, the incharge and chairman of Coordination Com- mittee for Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency, said, “Democracy is the best answer for solving problems. It is only through the democratic process the state can be taken out of its problems.” CMYK
