Shivpora was one of the worst affected areas during devastating floods in September 2014. Authori- ties had plugged breaches, however due to rains, a vast stretch of embankment has caved in. The locals mince no words to accuse the Irri- gation and Flood Control (I&FC) department of failing to strengthen the damaged embankment. “The authorities are focusing on dredging and have failed to permanently repair the embankments,” said a group of locals point- ing towards cracks devel- oped on embankments near Shivpora’s Purnibal area. Another crack has develop- ment on embankment near a temple behind Shangrilla Hotel located at Sonawar. “The Irrigation and Flood Control department did not undertake the repairs of embankments properly. Due to low water level in Jhelum, winter is considered to be best time to repair embankments. But concerned authorities failed to undertake the work,” said Saqib Wani, a resident of Purnibal, Shivpora.l Muhammad Rafiq, another resident said, “we are living in fear psychosis.” “We are yet to restart our lives following the devastat- ing floods. If the authorities fail to repair the embank- ments, we will be forced to migrate to safer places,” he said. The locals said the embankments had crumbled for the second time. “Last year, the authorities just placed some sand bags over the damaged embankments and did not take measures to repair it,” they said. The locals said in case water level increases in Jhelum, the water will enter locality from these cracks. “Authorities will be respon- sible in case of any eventuali- ty due to crumbling embank- ments,” they said. Chief Engineer, Irri- gation and Flood Control, Javid Jaffar said “there is no need to panic.” “I will send a team to look into the matter,” Jaffar added. Authorities mute over wrong parking in city centre ALI IMRAN Srinagar, Feb 12: Wrong parking of vehicles in various areas of city-cen- tre is hampering smooth vehicular and pedestrian movement. In absence of regu- lation by the Traffic department, vehicles are parked on footpaths and roadsides at Residency Road near Hotel Ahdoos. The footpath outside the office of Director School Education Kashmir has also been turned into a parking zone. “While traffic cops are acting as mute spec- tators, the erring drivers don’t desist to park their vehicles on even foot- paths. We are left with no option but to walk on road. This poses risk of accidents,” said Ghulam Nabi, a pedestrian point- ing towards vehicles parked on footpath at Residency Road. Hearing Public Inter- est Litigation on traffic mess in Srinagar, the High Court on November 27 last year had directed Traffic department to dis- allow parking of vehicles on roadsides. . The Traffic depart- ment had asked shop- keepers and commuters to desist from parking vehicles in city-centre areas including Lal Chowk, Residency Road, Polo View, Court Road, Hari Singh High Street, Jehangir Chowk, Maisu- ma, Budshah Chowk, Maulana Azad Road and Batamaloo. However, in absence of regulation, vehicles are parked in no parking zones. SSP Traffic (City) Maqsood-ul-Zaman said “we will intensify drive against wrong parking in these areas and take action the erring driv- ers.” Buchwara residents decry unscheduled power cuts Srinagar, Feb 12: Residents of Buchwara area of Dalgate have decried unscheduled power cuts from past several days. A delegation from the area led by Aftab Ahmad said despite being a tourist hub and fully metered area, the PDD resorts to unscheduled power cuts. “We appeal the Chief Engineer PDD to look into the matter,” they said. HOUSE GUTTED AT TENGPORA Embezzlement of funds in Harwan Block Rural Development deptt orders probe, suspends official Srinagar, Feb 12: Authorities have ordered probe into the allegations that funds alloed for implementa- tion of various schemes in Harwan block here on city outskirts were “misused and embezzled.” The authorities have also suspended village level worker, believed to be the part of the alleged scam. Local news agency CNS said," a team of officials will inquire the corruption charges and conduct verification of all details related to the schemes and various public works done at Fakir Gujri". “The Sarpanch of Fakir Gujri has utilized all sanctioned funds and projects for his own benefit. The public money was not spent for the progress and development of the area,” the news agency said quoting an official privy to the inquiry. We are also ascertaining if there was any abetment from any side to the Sarpanch in misusing the public money. Funds were released for con- struction of bunds which were not utilized properly. We have reasons to believe that all this is done in complic- ity with block-level authorities,” the official added. Syed Farhana Asgar, Block Development Officer Harwan, said that she has taken cognizance of the complaints. “Yes, all these complaints have also come to my office. The higher authorities have already set up an inquiry commiee to look into it. One of the village level workers has already been suspended. Inquiry is going on,” she added. Director Rural Development Department, Tasaduq Jeelani, said that he will seek explanation from the concerned BDO and thorough- ly probe the maer Srinagar, Feb 12: A house was gutted in a fire incident at Tengpora Bypass here last night. Reports said the fire started in the house of Ghulam Nabi Rather son of late Ghulam Hassan Rather of Tengpora Byepass near Hanifay Masjid and engulfed it. The locals and personnel of Fire and Emer- gency department reached the spot and brought the fire under control. Embezzlement of funds in Harwan Block

Rural Development deptt orders probe, suspends officialSrinagar, Feb 12: Authorities have ordered probe into the allegations that funds allotted for implementa-tion of various schemes in Harwan block here on city outskirts were “misused and embezzled.” The authorities have also suspended village level worker, believed to be the part of the alleged scam. Local news agency CNS said," a team of officials will inquire the corruption charges and conduct verification of all details related to the schemes and various public works done at Fakir Gujri".

“The Sarpanch of Fakir Gujri has utilized all sanctioned funds and projects for his own benefit. The public money was not spent for the progress and development of the area,” the news agency said quoting an official privy to the inquiry. We are also ascertaining if there was any abetment from any side to the Sarpanch in misusing the public money. Funds were released for con-struction of bunds which were not utilized properly. We have reasons to believe that all this is done in complic-ity with block-level authorities,” the official added.

Syed Farhana Asgar, Block Development Officer Harwan, said that she has taken cognizance of the complaints. “Yes, all these complaints have also come to my office. The higher authorities have already set up an inquiry committee to look into it. One of the village level workers has already been suspended. Inquiry is going on,” she added.
