As the 2014 season winds down, there seems to be a lot ofdismal buzz in the press about the state of golf and its future. But is it really all doom and gloom?

Golf courses had been closing at an average rate of 100 per year(157 in 2011) and others are being sold for ridiculously low amountsof money. Since around 2000, shortly after Tiger came on the scene, more golfers began leaving the sport than those who were taking itup. The number of frequent golfers (golfers that play more than 12times a year) has dropped by one third in recent years. Why, you ask?

Some people chalk it up to the decline in the economy versus the cost to play thegame. Others point to the amount of time it takes to play, that they are too busy, that theyhave less leisure time due to their jobs. family commitments and more work needed to getdone around the house. While others just feel it is too difficult a game to play. They getfrustrated and quit. This was something I felt was far reaching until I recently played withsomeone who just returned to the game after a five year hiatus having quit playingbecause he was too frustrated.

First of all, this “sky is falling” attitude toward the game of golf is precipitated by thegolf equipment industry. Sales are down and they’re in a panic. Secondly, the industry isgoing through a correction, one they’d prefer not to admit. Tiger Woods created a golffrenzy which resulted in an over satuation of golf courses being built. According the theNational Golf Foundation, 4,500 courses opened between 1986 and 2005. Since, 2006,643 courses have closed. That equates to less than 5 percent of the 14,564 golf courses inthe U.S.

Mark King, President of Adidas Group North America, which owns TaylorMade,Adams, Reebok, among others, wants to grow the game by enlarging the cup size to 15inches. He thinks it will be more fun for those entering the game. Please! It’s programslike the USGA’s Drive, Pitch and Putt competiton, that was debuted at The Masters thisyear, that will get young people excited about the game. The golf industry has to acceptthat not every person will take up the game of golf just as not everyone plays soccer. Thesky is not falling, it’s just a little cloudy.

Stop slow play and may your lies be good ones!

2014 ISSUE 36 GREAT GOLF - NEW JERSEY/NEW YORK

When I think of the greatest

athletes of all time, names come

to my mind, not for the records

they hold, but for what they may have

brought to their sport at the time they

played. Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders, Jackie

Joyner-Kersee, Bruce Lee, Cheryl Miller,

Bobby Orr, Martina Navratilova, Carl

Lewis, Dan Gable, Jackie Robinson, to

name a few, have all had accomplishments

that may never be be surpassed again.

Over the years, Tiger Woods has

developed problems both voluntarily (his

personal life) and involuntarily. Back in

1999 and 2000, he was regarded by his

peers as a “freak of nature” for the

number of tournaments he was

winning. Michael Campbell was

quoted as saying, “I mean Tiger is so

phenomenal it's frightening. The only

way we can defeat Tiger is for him to

make mistakes.” When you’ve earned

that kind of respect (and fear) from

your peers, you’re doing something in

your sport that has never been seen

before. Heck, in June 2008, he won a US

Open at Torry Pines playing an 18 hole

playoff with two stress fractures of the left

tibia! Even his challenger, Rocco Mediate,

was in awe of how he could play with

such an injury. Eight days later, he has

reconstructive surgery on the anterior

cruciate ligament in his left knee, and to

repair cartilage damage.

This is where involuntary could

sideline Tiger from his quest to beat Jack

Nicklaus’ Majors record - his injuries.

As a freshman at Stanford, Tiger had

surgery to remove two benign tumors and

scar tissue in his left knee. In December

WHY TIGER WOODS ISGREATEST GOLFER WHPLAYED THE GAME!

2002, Tiger had surgery to remove fluid

inside and around the anterior cruciate

ligament of his left knee. July 2007, he

then ruptures the anterior cruciate

ligament in his left knee after taking a

misstep while running on a golf course.

He wins five of the last six tournaments

he plays, including the PGA

Championship. In April 2008, two days

after his runner-up finish at the Masters,

Tiger has athroscopic surgery on his left

knee to repair cartilage damage.

Six months after beating Rocco

Mediate in a playoff at the U.S. Open,

Tiger ruptures the Achilles' tendon in his

right leg.

In May 2010, Tiger withdraws on the

seventh hole of the final round at The

Players Championship with what he fears

is a bulging disk. He later says it was

inflammation of a joint in his neck. He

doesn't miss a start, returning a month

later at the Memorial. In April 2011,

Tiger reveals that he has a minor sprain of

the medial collateral ligaments in his left

knee and minor strain of his left Achilles

that he suffered at The Masters earlier that

month.

In March 2012, Tiger withdraws from

the final round of the WGC-Cadillac

Championship at Doral reinjuring his left

Achilles. The next June, Tiger injures his

left elbow at the 2013 Players

Championship. Then in August, at Liberty

National, Tiger falls to the ground in pain

due to back problems but still finishes in

2nd place.

Then finally, in April of this year,

Tiger underwent surgery to correct a

pinched nerve in his back, a procedure

that would cause him to miss both the

Masters and the U.S. Open only ot re-

aggravate his back at the WGC-

Bridgestone Invitational.

So, there you have it. Most athletes

would have hung up their cleats,

involuntarily, long ago. Not Tiger!

So, the question remains. Needing just

5 more Major victories, will Tiger surpass

Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 Major wins?

Soon to be 39 years old, probably not. But

then again, he’s Tiger Woods, a freak of

nature!

Nelson, followed by Jack Nicklaus with

105.

Although summer isn’t over and theFall season is still weeks away, theChristmas season will be here

before we know it. I’m not trying to rushthings as I dislike the cold as much as thenext guy, but it’s never too early to bethinking about some of the items yourfavorite golfer might enjoy getting underthe tree! Here are a couple of items I havewritten about in the past that are worthfeaturing again:

LINKS AND LUXURYESN WR67 AND WR72

I am a huge proponent of speeding upplay on the golf course. It irks me when Iget behind golfers who not only do notkeep up with the group in front of them, but they conduct themselves as if they arethe only ones out on the course. They willhit a ball, get back into their cart and thendrive ten yards for the next person in thecart to hit their ball. I realize that nothingless than a little kick in their a** couldcure their problem, however, there aredevices that are now approved for play,by the USGA, that will speed up play sothere are fewer knuckleheads on the golfcourse.

Much of the time spent on the courseis determining yardages from where yourball lies. Yardage markers withinformation on distances to the front, middle and back of the grees are usuallyplaced on sprinkler heads throughout thefairways. However, since many golfersare often not in the fairway, a goodamount of time is taken locating ayardage marker, counting off the paces totheir ball, and then striking their ballwhich ultimately adds time to their roundand yours.

For years, distance finders becamethe go to device for shooting the flag for

exact distances. I, for one, always reliedon my distance finder which I foundsaved me time from locating yardagemarkers and pacing off the distance inorder to speed up play. Then came theGPS watch.

I road tested the Garmin when it firstcame out and it quickly became my“fifteenth club.” The only time I lookedat a yardage marker was to check theaccuracy of my Garmin. My onlycomplaint with the Garmin was its shortbattery life and occasional loss ofconnection with the satellites.

About a year later, I stumbled upon anew, unknown branded GPS watch by acompany named ESN (Express SatelliteNavigation) which made the WR67. TheWR67 claimed to connect to moresatellites (67) and provide longer batterylife that it’s competition (which, at thattime, was the Garmin). Not only did itconnect to thesatellites quicklyand stay connectedthroughout theround, there wasstill 75% batterylife remaing at theend of the roundcompared to almostnone with theGarmin. The WR67also had features that the Garmin did nothave such as the ability to set your teetime on the watch which will activate theGPS at that precise time. It also providesyou with the total time your round tookonce you’ve turned off the device at thecompletion of your round.

The course mapping on the WR67 isprovided by iGolf, a company that mapsgolf courses for a number of handhelddistance measuring devices. I was playing

Liberty National, in Jersey City, andfound that the distances the WR67provided me on hole 18 were inaccurateprimarily due to a redesign of the hole. Isent emails both to iGolf (who got back tome right away and provided me with anupdate within a couple of days) and toGarmin, who never got back to me, forthree years now and counting.

Earlier this year, ESN decided to pickit up a few notches by releasing theWR72 (72 satellites), a luxury GPS watchdesigned to be worn as an everyday pieceof jewelry. The WR72 comes in bothpolished and brushed titanium with ananti-reflective crystal, stainless steelbuttons, leather bandfrom HadleyRoma, and asmooth, curved face. The WR72comes withthe samegreattechnology asthe WR67.The only indication that it is used for golfis by the tee flag image on the casing.Other than that, it makes a rich, classypresentation that I guarantee your favoritegolfer will be thrilled to wear.

The reason you might never haveheard of ESN is due to a licensingagreement between Bushnell and ESNwho provides the technology to Bushnellfor their watches. So, if you own aalready Bushnell watch, you also won anESN.

The WR67 is available on theirwebsite, www.golfesn.com for only$149.99 as is the WR72 which is priced at$249.99 for the polished titanium modeland $269.99 for the brushed titanium. Allthree watches come with a 2 yearwarranty. They have great customerservice and truly value their customers.

AFFORDABLE GOLFTEE TIME GOLF PASS

In my Publisher’s Blog, I mentionthat one of the reasons why golfpartipation has declined in recent years isdue to the downturn in the economyversus the cost to play. More golf coursesare allowing companies like GolfNow tosell their tee times at a reduced rate inorder to keep the register ringing. However, vehicles like GolfNow charge afee to use their service which counters thepurpose for buying discount tee times.

Tee Time Golf Pass, NortheastEdition, is one of golf's largest and mostrespected discount passbooks since 1992.It contains huge discounts at your favoritelocal courses plus hundreds of others inthe region and at destination areas. Thebook has 153 participating courses in NJ,NY, CT and Eastern PA. Redeeming justone or two of the 83 free or discountedgreens fees will pay for the cost of thebook.

GREAT GOLF - NEW JERSEY/NEW YORK 2014 ISSUE 320

Golf courses in Ulster County certainly deserved a break with the weather this year after amostly unprecedented winter of snow and cold. So I’m happy to report that the weatherhas been sensational this summer, particularly during weekends when traffic at our dozen

public courses was the busiest. There were plenty of warm days and little rain. Some of our courses had severe flooding and tree damage from Hurricane Irene three years

ago, but they all bounced back amazingly well. The resiliency of the owners and their workers wasevident at courses such as New Paltz Golf Course, which during the worst of it had water coveringmuch of the course.

But the golf course superintendents at New Paltz and all the other courses did a terrific jobbringing their courses back to life.

One of the truly amazing success stories is what has happened in Saugerties with the coursebuilt by Dr. Anthony Bacchi. Lazy Swan Golf and Country Club Village expanded from nine holesto 18 holes in spring of 2012 and enjoyed a tremendous year, according to golf pro Steve Simone.

Bacchi took a chance when he opened a golf course and restaurant in 2005 amid ratherunsettling economic times. While courses around the country were closing, Bacchi had a visionthat if he built a quality product people would come. His risk has paid off handsomely.

In a short time, Lazy Swan has established itself as a major player in the golf business.Golfers from the New York metropolitan area, New Jersey, Connecticut and Albany have foundthe course to be well-groomed and challenging and the staff to be very efficient and courteous. Rondout Golf Club, a scenic 18-hole semi-private course in Accord, is known for its excellentconditioning. Apple Greens Golf Course in Highland is always busy, as the 27-hole layout, whichis located just five minutes from the New Paltz exit on the New York State Thruway, continues toattract golfers from New York City and central and northern New Jersey who don't mind drivingmore than an hour because there is no waiting and a quick pace of play.

Acclaimed golf course architect Robert Trent Jones designed the Fallsview Golf Course atthe Honor’s Haven Resort and Spa in Ellenville, which has been the site of numerous professionaland amateur tournaments.

The courses are so diverse that visitors and locals alike never become bored playing golfhere. If a golfer likes mountain resort courses, he or she will be thrilled golfing at the Fallsview atthe Honor's Haven, the Hudson Valley Resort and Spa in Kerhonkson and the Mohonk MountainHouse course in New Paltz. There's great risk-reward potential when one tees it up at RondoutGolf Club, and Apple Greens Golf Course is cut right out of an apple orchard.

We’re blessed to have so many great golf courses in our midst. For those who haven’tplayed them, they’re still open until the snow flies.

Basking RidgeCountry Club,located in

Somerset County, isrecognized for itseighteen holes of plushfairways and smoothgreens, but somethingyou may not be aware ofis their all-new revitalizedrestaurant. Last November, theclubhouse restaurantcame under newmanagement by acatering company calledDelicious Heights.Opened by two brothers,Ralph and Dominic Acquaviva with partner Alex Rubunstein, they began with a deli inBerkeley Heights. Several years of success allowed them to open their first restaurant inBerkeley Heights and another soon after in Bedminster just three years ago. Their unique menuand delectable food has kept them climbing the food chain, and after a decade since inceptiontheir third restaurant entitled, Delicious Heights Outpost, has arrived at Basking Ridge CountryClub.

Delicious Heights wanted to create the most enjoyable eating experience possible and hitthe ground running! The previous restaurant was stripped down and renovated includingchanges such as new floors, tables, eleven new televisions, and completely redoing the insideand outside bar areas. As the outside patio overlooks the eighteenth hole, the players now walkinto a flourishing scenery of beach umbrellas and a great bar area where they can relax as theirrounds come to a close.

The main restaurant has a sophisticated rustic wine cellar feel to it with a sereneambiance. It isn’t hard to feel right at home with the overly friendly staff and uniqueenvironment. The members have really taken to the new menu and are raving about how muchthey love the food with items such as, the Tuscan Eggplant Sandwich, or the TiramisuCheesecake.

Open seven days a week, from 11am-1am, it can seat nearly 300 people. General Manager,Walter Espinosa, says business ranges about 50/50 between members and guests. EveryThursday through Saturday you can enjoy live bands posted on the patio playing an array ofmusic genres. BRCC and DH Outpost are even taking strides to hold new events for people ofall ages. This October 2nd, they will be hosting their own version of Octoberfest. It will be aone-day event open to the public with German style music and food.

In addition to the restaurant changes, Delicious Heights has repainted, furnished, andcarpeted the entire upstairs banquet area and ballroom. The banquet area is comprised of two

rooms for smaller private parties and weddings withgroups of thirty to ninety, and includes a magnificentview of the eighteenth hole. The ballroom area is forlarger weddings and meetings handling groups ofnearly 230 people and has a great view of hole numberone off to the left. With all of these fantastic changes tothe clubhouse, DH also has an enormous tent that isavailable ten months out of the year. The tent overlooks

the practice facility and even has an amazing restroom facility just outside. The wonderfulenhancements to BRCC, by Delicious Heights, has truly taken the club to another level ofcustomer satisfaction by creating an environment with allof the essentials for a great time.
