Great Fast Period of fast, prayer, meditation t hat prepares s for the Holy Week and the Resurrecti on of Christ. It is named Lent because it imitates the forty-day fast that Christ had. It is also said Great in order to distinguish it from Christmas Fast. Holy Fast was established in the 4 th century. Initially, its duration was six weeks, while later one more week was added. Thus, nowadays Great Lent begins on Clean Monday and finishes on Holy Saturday. During Lent, on every Wednesday and Friday, is taken place in the church Proigiasmeni Sequence.

• Lent was depicted as a skinny and strict woman, without mouth, because she should not eat, with 7 legs, as many as the weeks until Easter. They made her from cardboard with feathers and they used to hung her from the ceiling. Each week that passed they cut one leg, until they reached Easter.

Palm Sunday

• Last Sunday of Great Lent, is Palm Sunday.  It is the day dedicated to the triumphant arrival of Christ in Jerusalem from Bithania. Then the crowd welcomed Christ with acclamations and with palm leaves, which gave their name to that day.

Holy Monday

• Holy Monday is dedicated to Iosif Pagkalos, son of Jacob, whose brothers sold him because they were jealous of him and the fruitless fig tree that Jesus Christ cursed.

Holy Tuesday• On Holy Tuesday we listen to two parables: the parable

of virgin babies and the parable of talanta. Both parables show that we have to develop the holy gifts for public’s sake. On Good Tuesday we also listen to Kassianis Hymn.

Holy Wednesday

• On Holy Wednesday, two days before the Crucifixion, the hore asked for Jesus Christ forgiveness for her sins and washed his feet with oil. On the other hand, Judas betrayed his Master for 30 argyria. On Good Wednesday, we have the Extreme Unction.

Customs on Holy Wednesday

• On Holy Wednesday, apart from the Extreme Unction in church, people renew the dοugh of bread. They also bless flour, salt and eggs. The production of dough is of a great importance.

Holy Thursday• Holy Thursday is the last day before Jesus

Christ’s Crucifixion. During the Last Supper, Jesus Christ washed his students’ feet.

Customs of Holy Thursday• On Holy Thursday, we dye

the eggs red. The egg, symbol of life in many civilizations, constitute a powerful Easter symbol. The red colour symbolizes Jesus Christ’s blood. The egg symbolizes Jesus Christ’s grave, from which he returned to eternal life with his Resurrection.
