Nat ional Bullying Prevent ion Awareness
The South Charleston Public Library Youth Services team wore our blue shirts and actively facilitated focused programs during October for National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month.
With thanks to all who helped with programs, we watched movies about overcoming bullying, had Middle School Meetup programs and discussions about how bullying negatively impacts both the bullied and the bully, and displayed special collections of books and information about bullying prevention throughout the month.
Our goal is to provide relevant information and support potential solutions that will help eliminate bullying in our community. New library resources (both in the library and online) are available year-round, and a focus on bullying prevention is ongoing in our work with the young people who visit our library. Please contact Youth Services if you have ideas or would like to partner with us for programs.

YOUTH SERVICES
1000BBK Program
Youth Services now offers another program specifically for our youngest readers - 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. A national program designed to benchmark 1000 books read to or by a child before kindergarten, the goal of the program is to provide a simple, innovative, and fun approach to establishing strong early literacy skills.
SCPL?s 1000BBK program works as follows:
Sign up for a library card with SCPL
Register your preschooler (birth to preschool) for the program
Record books read to, with, and by your reader using program booklogs
Visit the library each time 100 books have been read
Attend library programs and events as able to promote a love of reading
Show your reader?s completed logbook for certificate of completion and recognition
To register, stop by the library and see a member of the Youth Services team Monday - Friday between 10 am and 6 pm. We hope to see you and your litt le readers soon!
Ear ly Readers Going St rong
At least one of our first enrollees in the 1000BBK program have already reached 500 books (Yay, Will!!!), and we already have almost 90 readers progressing through this fun reading program. Visit YOUR library today to register your young readers!
Our Youth Services Family Fun
Fest "Test Drive Your
Costumes" event was big fun!
We had 121 (!!!) people join us
to hear Halloween stories and
songs, and make pumpkin
crafts. Thanks to all the families
who choose to come to our
event, and for being so
understanding about the size of
the crowd and logist ics. Having
so many people attend our
events means we need to start
considering an expansion of our
library spaces -- what a
wonderful "problem" to have!
