Well nearly! This year Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, will be on 10th February, so the season of Lent is almost with us. on the persecuted church. In this regard our 21st Century has had a particularly troubled start if one looks at the serious persecution of Christians which is currently taking place in North Africa, the Middle East, Pakistan and North Korea. Every day in Lent a Reader will take a different theme from the passion journey of Christ for their reflections. I encourage you all to have a look at this website. You may well see some familiar faces! The course is at www.sufferingwithchrist.org.uk. Naturally I hope that many of you will dip into this resource provided by our local Readers as a guide for your Lent meditations. I should also add that the SSJE course is to be provided again in 2016 with a series focusing on God as the Chief Gardener of our souls, and the ways we may grow into the fullness he desires for us. The website for these reflections is www.ssje.org I very much hope you enjoy your "vir-tual" Lent. Eric Wright, Reader.

So please drop in to see me on a Thurs-day afternoon from 2-4 in the Albert Un-derwood Room, Irthlingborough. Carole McIntyre, Parish Nurse.

Thank You

We would like to thank everyone for their support and kind words since Colin died. As you all know his death was very sudden and a great shock to us all but knowing that we have so many friends supporting us has been very comfort-ing. Lesley, Simon, James and Christo-pher.

A Happy New Year and thank you to those who provided holly and foliage, and to all the flower arrangers who helped to make the church look so beau-tiful for Christmas. We had many com-pliments this year.

If anyone would like to put a few spring flowers in church for Easter, please feel free to do so. Easter Sunday is 27th March. The church will be open from 3.30pm on Good Friday and Satur-day all day.

Best Wishes Ann 01832 734024.

Woodford Church o f England Primary School

Our school has been a busy place of learning recently, with mini-beasts visit-ing the Year 1/2 classroom and children in Years 3 and 4 transporting themselves to the Amazon rainforest in their lesson times. We’ve been proud of the chil-dren’s learning, their attitudes towards schoolwork and their enjoyment of sports events. The Year 4/5 children especially enjoyed their Take 6 P.E. event. Next we plan to take all children from Years R – 6 to the Oundle Literature Festival, in March. Children will meet, and hopefully be inspired by, the authors Holly Webb, Smriti Prasdam, Abi Elphinstone and Megan Rix.

Community members are invited to get to know our busy school – please do use our website to get in touch or to read the weekly Headteacher news blog. The dia-ry dates page of our website often details events going on in school, which com-munity members are very welcome to join in with. We are particularly looking forward to working with the parent fo-rum and community members to grow our garden space this spring, so please do let us know if you can help.

Governor needed! Could you spare time to help us with the strategic devel-opment of our school? Please contact Ms Ransome on 01832 733221 or at [email protected] if you would like to know more.

The Addingtons Pre-school We've had a lovely half term back in

Pre-school looking at some famous art-ists, inventors and scientists of the Re-naissance period. The children have pro-duced some of their own great artwork which they've shared at home.

We will celebrate Chinese New Year on 8th February, with our own Chinese restaurant, a Chinese banquet and make a dragon for our dragon dance. We're sure the children will enjoy looking at the way other cultures celebrate their own New Year.

Great Addington Church of

Eng land Pr imary School On the coldest evening of this win-

ter our football team worked their socks off playing in the County Fi-nals of the Small Schools Football Tournament. Qualifying through to the semi-finals they then faced Great Doddington. After full time and extra time it was nil : nil....penalties await-ed and, on the final shoot, we lost out by just one goal!!! The pride and ad-miration I had for our boys was over-powering; they gave it everything and should be so proud of them-selves. My thanks also go to the commitment shown by their parents who joined me in support of the team from the sideline. It was another wonderful occasion and I look for-ward now to the County Finals of the Tag Rugby, which we have also qual-ified for, being held at The Saints

ground in Northampton later this term.

The children in Deene Class arrived to school one Monday to find their classroom covered in snow and they had their very own ice rink!! Our foundation stage is gaining fame and is being recognized for its outstand-ing practice across the County. We have already had visits from other schools trying to find out what our secret is!

Congratulations to Mrs Skelton who, in recognition of her skills in teaching and assessing writing, has been invited to become a County Moderator. I know that she will bring back even more wonderful ideas to our school from her visits working with other schools across Northamp-tonshire.

Advance notice to Lamport Class; Mrs Cope has booked for you to trav-el to London in June to see the West End show Charlie and the Chocolate Factory... ..it's going to be amazing!

Now has anyone spotted the miss-ing frog in Lilford Class?? There are posters all around the school asking for our help. Has Mrs Lacatusu really got it?? This is a real mystery and one that is sparking a lot of imagina-tive writing for our Year 1 and 2 children.

Parents – please come into school on Wednesday 10th February, from 3 pm, when we stage our 'Come and See our Work' event...we know you will be impressed.

So many exciting things are taking place in our classrooms. I know the children are talking about their work at home. Our school is buzzing with creativity and hard work and we thank everyone in the community for

Lit t le Add ington Pari sh Counc i l At the meeting held 12th January 2016

the following items of general interest were discussed:-

Defibrillator in Village – The British Heart Foundation have agreed to donate a defibrillator to the Council and BT have confirmed that they shall be remov-ing the telephone shortly as the Council will adopt the phone box. Training for the defibrillator is to be arranged in the near future.

Dog Mess in Village – It was noted that there had been a rise in Dog Mess throughout the Village. The Clerk has contacted the Dog Warden as there is a £1,000 penalty for the owner allowing its dog to foul. ENC had confirmed it is OK to put Dog Waste in the bins throughout the village.

Financial - The Clerk presented the Draft Budget for the year 2016-17 which was considered. Following discussion it was proposed and duly resolved that the Budget be approved and accepted by the Council. The Council agreed a pre-cept request of £9,600 for 2016-17. It was noted that the rise was to reflect the further rise in the Council’s statutory obligations as well as the cost of training for the village defibrillator.

10

Crime in the Community - PC Geoff Toseland and PCSO David Bryan attend-ed the meeting and gave a presentation to the meeting regarding local crime and listened to the Council’s concerns which included speeding. It was suggested that the Village should set up a Community Speed Watch and anyone wishing to vol-unteer would be given full training by the Safer Community Team. Please contact the Clerk if you are interested.

Please note that Little Addington will be lighting a beacon to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday on Thursday, 21st April 2016.

You are duly invited, as always, to the next Meeting on Tuesday, 8th March 2016 in the Church Meeting Room at 7.30pm.

The full Draft Minutes are on the No-tice Board and Website as usual.

a discussion took place with a member of the East Midlands Ambulance trust re-garding the soon to be installed defibril-lator. Councillors received the confirma-tion form that the fair will be visiting the village again this year from 10th July as part of the feast week celebrations.

A litter pick is planned around the vil-lage on 9th April. If you would like to take part please contact the Clerk – Paul Bird on 01832 734329 or Parish Council-lor David Stevens on 07545114642.

There were no planning matters to dis-cuss this month.

The crime report from the Police listed five crimes which had occurred in De-cember; three violent offences, one theft of a vehicle and one of theft / handling.

Data from the Speed Indicator Device was also discussed. The most recent data has revealed that traffic coming into the village on Thrapston Road is not only of greater volume than other routes into the village, but also travels faster, with 65% breaking the speed limit. This data has been passed to the Community Police Team who has indicated that tackling speeding in local villages is their priority for the next couple of months.

Neighbourhood Watch Report Jan/Feb16

The following report has been received from an Area Support Team.

One of our NHW members has just had a phone call from a security company stating that they are selling a security device for telephones, which will guaran-tee an instant police response!!! The de-vice will cost £90. They stated that the police are aware of this – which is obvi-ously not the case, as nothing you put on your telephone will guarantee an instant police response. The call was from a withheld number. The police have been notified and an incident report has been drawn up. Please do not fall prey to this and inform any elderly friends or relatives who do not use social media.

Janet Mayes NWC Great Addington 01536330671

Please make a note of the telephone number 101 which is for making non urgent calls to report incidents to the police.

Commissioner’ s Le t te r Making Northamptonshire the safest

place in England requires us to recognise and understand the differing needs and challenges of our urban and rural com-munities.

As Northamptonshire is well above the national average of 17% of people living in rural locations, with almost a third of our population living in and around rural towns I have, along with the Chief Con-stable of Northamptonshire Police, intro-duced a Rural Action Strategy, outlining my aspirations to tackle rural crime.

Our Rural Action Vision centres on the key points of communication, preven-tion, performance, training &equipment, community engagement, victims and witnesses. We will maximise our capaci-ty and ability to communicate effective-

ly, in a timely and accurate way with rural communities. We will improve and use police and partnership tactics to pre-vent and detect crime in rural areas. We have developed a modern definition of ‘rural crime’ in order to measure perfor-mance, which identifies those crimes of concerns to rural communities. We are developing a clear command structure, governance regime, and stake holder map, to ensure that formal bodies such as NPCC, NFU and ‘Watch’ bodies are involved along with local arrangements such as Rural Forums and community groups. We will review and improve training and equipment provided to rural officers, staff and volunteers. We will plan engagement with rural communities to create a County-wide rural calendar of events and key seasonal crime types. We will be victim focused in our response and investigation efforts, and this will include Voice as well as an improved general response.

If you would like to find out more about our Rural Action Strategy, please visit the website at http://www.northamptonshireruralaction.co.uk/

Great Addington Parish Counci l Precept for 2016/17 The Council’s budget for 2016/17

was finalised at the December 2015 meeting and the precept was set at £8,614 which is the same level as last year. Please contact the Clerk if you would like more information, includ-ing a full breakdown of the Council’s budget for 2016/17.

Community Speed Watch 2016 As reported previously, the Council

is once again asking for volunteers to be trained to help with Community Speed Watch (CSW). The next train-ing session will be held at Caroline

14

Chisolm School, Wooldale Road, Northampton NN4 6TP on Saturday 13th February 2016 from 9:30 am to 12 noon so please contact the Clerk if you would like to volunteer for CSW.

Volunteers are trained to use hand held speed cameras to monitor the speed of traffic through their village and the information obtained is passed on to the Police. Letters are then sent to the owners of the speed-ing vehicles, stating that repeat of-fenders could face prosecution. By being involved in CSW, Great Ad-dington has the benefit of follow up visits and continued support from Northamptonshire Police to ensure that as much as possible is being done to tackle the problem of speed-ing.

Northamptonshire Police sent traf-fic survey reports from before and after Great Addington had use of the speed device and associated equip-ment last year and these showed a significant reduction in speeding. The percentage of vehicles exceeding the 30 mph speed limit reduced from 84% to 42% while those travelling over 35 mph dropped from 57% to 12%. The Council would like to thank everyone for their continued support of CSW, especially the vol-unteers.

Nuisance caused by bonfires The Council has received a further

request to remind residents in Great Addington to be considerate to their neighbours when disposing of garden or household waste by lighting bon-fires. Burning waste that is likely to create excessive smoke or noxious fumes such as rubber, plastics and painted materials is harmful to the

Page 10

15

environment and to human health. People with existing health problems such as asthma or a heart condition are particularly affected by smoke.

There are no specific byelaws pro-hibiting garden bonfires (or specify-ing times they may be lit) but if you plan to light a bonfire, please make sure that the wind direction is blow-ing away from neighbouring proper-ties because this is less likely to cause a nuisance. Please also note that there is legislation (the Environmental Protection Act 1990) which deals with the nuisance and harmful effects bonfires might cause.

If you would like more information on disposing of waste responsibly or if you wish to complain about a nui-sance caused by bonfires, please write to Environmental Services, East Northamptonshire Council, Cedar Drive, Thrapston, Kettering, North-amptonshire NN14 4LZ, call 01832 742263 or send an e-mail to [email protected]

Northamptonshire County Coun-

cil public consultations Northamptonshire County Council

is inviting local residents to ‘have their say’ this month on its minerals and waste allocations and designa-tions; prioritising services to improve health and wellbeing, and parking standards to be used when accessing developments. The Parish Council has decided that it will not submit formal representations to these con-sultations because it believes that residents are better placed to put for-ward their own views on the issues which affect them.

16

If you would like more information and/or wish to comment on any of these issues, please write to North-amptonshire County Council, County Hall, Northampton NN1 1DN, visit the website

[email protected] before the respective deadlines.

Date of the next meeting The next meeting of the Council

will be held in the Memorial Hall, Great Addington on Wednesday 17th February 2016 at 7:45 pm. and the agenda will be available (on the web-site and the notice board) 3 clear days before this date. Please note that members of the public have the right to attend any meeting of the Council.

By inviting 8 friends and asking them to donate an additional £5.00 means you will raise at least £40.00, but we will give you additional fundraising ideas. Just £50 could con-tribute towards the support from our Peer Support Service for one hour, in a district general hospital or Major Trauma Centre. Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord in-jured people in the UK alone. Money raised will

2

help the Spinal Injuries Association support indi-viduals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives. For more information or request a fundraising pack call Elizabeth Wright on 0845 071 4350 or email [email protected] or visit www.siafishandchips.co.uk
