Advantages of the Short PistolAdvantages of the Short Pistol
1. We have emphasized for years to step deep at 5 o’clock or 7 o’clock to mesh our triple play. The short pistol accommodates our desire for depth by aligning the QB 21/2 yards away from the center.
2. We reduce the box with our alignment of our slots – our slots previously lined up 1 x 1 off of the outside leg of the tackle when we were under center. Now they align 5 yards wide and level with the quarterback. We did this to make the belly motion the correct angle.
3. Quick passing game – Our quarterback simply catches the snap and is in position to throw the quick game.
4. It hits vertically quicker than the true shotgun or true pistol and just a little slower than the under center option game (we lost a yard on our fullbacks alignment).
5.5. It protects the mesh from being attacked. It protects the mesh from being attacked.
6. It allows us to widen our splits to 3 feet in the A gap and 3 1/2 feet in the B gap which spreads the defense out and creates great blocking angles and natural creases.
7. It forces the hand-off key to be very definitive in his angle to attack the dive back. Consequently it makes the read for the quarterback much easier.
8. It gives the quarterback more time to read the hand-off key and then transition his eyes to the pitch key because the pitch key is wider due to our alignment and line splits.
1.A two handed snap with end-to-end rotational spin. We averaged eighteen negative yardage plays a year over the last five years. We could not have any bad or mishandled snaps.
2.The running back lines up with his hand five yards from the tip of the ball. He must be in a three point stance to hit the hole fast. Looks odd, but necessary.
3. The slots must be lined up on the same horizontal plane as the quarterback. Your motion must be quick and at an angle where the defense cannot recognize the goal of the motion.
4. The quarterback’s footwork is more pivot style footwork rather than stepping on an imaginary clock.
5. The quarterback has to be louder in our no huddle option attack.

Typically, Defenses will put one man in charge of a single gap. That is called a gap-control defense. Learning this concept, will enable us to understand which defender is in charge of each gap.

1. Quarterback must know that he can never pitch off the ILB unless we are blocking the pitch key.
2. We would look at motioning away from the side we dive and base it up or base up the frontside and hope the ILB over runs the play.
3. Another attempt would be to “bang release” the hand-off key and hope that the ILB comes over top to fast. The tackle will then go to backside ILB.
4. Another option is to insert the backside slot and arch the tackle.
5. Our next option would be to block the playside ILB with the slot.
6. The last option would be to block the pitch key with the slot and pitch off the ILB.
7. We could use a tight end or H back to break their scheme.

1. We catch the defense cheating because of option responsibilities
2. We aren’t going to run the ball into a seven man box3. Our offensive concepts allow us to dissect the backend
more effectively4. We become a dangerous “take what the defense gives us” offense5. Difficult to disguise blitzes6. Hard to pressure the quarterback – the ball is thrown so quickly7. We find the right match-ups to attack8. Pressure the defense by using motion

1. Have a play action pass off each run that we use
2. Our run scheme and our pass protection need to look the same.
3. Our play action must slow down the pass rush (we gave up 3 sacks this year)
4. Must attack the weakness in the defense and find the one-on-one matchup
5. Must keep the defense guessing
