To provide an area that allows for National Guard training while maintaining forest health, productivity, sustainability, species diversification, and structural diversity within the compartment. A fenced military training area, Range 30 Complex, is located in the northwest part of the compartment and is inaccessible for general forest management purposes.

Generally flat terrain with some rolling hills in the N1/2 of section 30. Soil types consist primarily of Grayling sands.

State land leased by the National Guard with some Military Board Lands. Part of Sections 29 and 30 are fenced off by the National Guard for Range 30. The rest of the compartment is also used by the National Guard for training.

Compartment contains Alleghaney plum, a species of special concern.

There are a couple locations that have been identified throughout the compartment. Though these locations have not been deemed significant, precautions will need to be taken during timber sale preparation and administration as well as during other planned intrusive activities.

Michigan National Guard Range 30 Complex. Protect the Alleghaney plum, and work with the Military on summer training and Range 30 firing schedules.

None

Maintain existing and preferred types for ruffed grouse, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, squirrel and non-game species.

An active, state-owned sand/gravel pit is located in Section 30 (Camp Grayling MPRC Pit) and another adjacent to it in Section 25 (Redhead Lane). The pit in Section 30 is currently leased to the DMVA. There appears to be potential for additional sand & gravel within the compartment in Section 30. Currently, there are no oil and gas leases in the compartment, though there are active leases in the surrounding area. The parcels were leased in 2015 (by Marathon) and are due to expire in 2020. There has been no oil & gas production in this area to date. No known metallic mineral potential exists in this part of the state. The state does not own the mineral rights beneath some of the compartment. Private mineral rights owners must be allowed reasonable access to the surface should they choose to explore and/or develop the minerals.

Additional Compartment Information:

The trails are used periodically by the National Guard. The trails are primarily located in section 28 and along the range fence in sections 29 and 30. Stephan Bridge Road runs north and south through the compartment and is gated when military training is occurring. ORV's are prohibited on any forest roads in this compartment.

None

No designated recreational facilities or trails exist within the compartment, but there are recreational opportunities such as hunting, mushrooming and wildlife watching when military training is not occurring. ORV's are prohibited on all forest roads in this compartment.

Fire protection falls under the jurisdiction of the Grayling Volunteer Fire Department, Camp Grayling Fire Department and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Kyle Lake, inside the MPRC (Range 30) in section 19, is the closest water source. With permission of the military, this water source is accessible. Wildfires are likely to occur within this compartment due to the heavy military use in the spring and summer months. There is also a water source at the MPRC building.

This compartment is inaccessible to the public during military training in the spring and summer months. Stephan Bridge Road and other two-track roads are gated during this time.

16 4125 - Black, N. Pin Oak Sawtimber Medium

72.6 92 1-50 Stand was harvested under contract 72-620-10-01 in the fall/winter of 2014/15. Overall BA is less than 50sqft. There is some oak mortality in residual. Understory is fairly consistent with some very dense pockets. Aspen, maple and oak make up the understory. there is a good presents of oak seedling in the 12' category. OPIC - FMD: 2010 update: Chose not to

treat adjacent stand in compt 257 per comments below. Military approval was not received for treating the adjacent stand and

there are two adj oak stands- staff member was not sure which one comments were referring to. After looking at situation, was determined we should wait until compt 257 is reinventoried and

up for treatment in 2014 to treat the oak stand referred to below. SJ Thiel 2008 Notes: Mature stand of Oak mixed with Aspen and Red Maple. Heavy National Guard use in the southend of stand. Stand is under long term military lease. Recommend selection cut, removing all Aspen, Red Maple and any other

species other than Oak. Leave All Oak. Goal is 50 BA. Leave residual heavier along the trails to discourage off road military

use. Also include the piece in adjacent compartment to the south. Allegheny Plum is a special concern in this stand.

17 4199 - Other Mixed Upland Deciduous

Sapling Well 90.8 18 Immature Stand was harvested in 2000. Has come back to a mixture of jack pine, oak, aspen and cherry in more open areas. Stems are anywhere from 5 to 25 feet tall with aspen being the tallest and

found in small clones. There are several open areas throughout this stand and a two track that runs thru the stand. There area some larger red pine scattered about as well. OPIC - FMD:

Contract #021-00-01, East Jack 29 Block, cut in 2000.

18 4131 - Aspen, Oak Sapling Well 5.7 39 111-140 Stand is a mixture of aspen, oak, jack pine, maple and shrubs. Doesn't have typical aspen stem density. Primarily pole/sap wit some oak lo trees. OPIC - FMD: OI Stand Year Origin was 1980

19 4131 - Aspen, Oak Sapling Well 22.4 6 Immature Stand was harvested in 2013 and is regenerating well. Stand is a mixture of aspen, maple and oak. OPIC - FMD: 2008 Notes: This stand was part of stand 23 previously and was not cut with

stand 23. Recommend final harvest with 1 acre retention patches within the stand. Should regenerate naturally to an

Aspen, Oak and Red Maple stand. 2013: Stand was harvested under contract 72-615-10-01 SW Range 30 Oak. Harvest was

complete in Jan 2013. Stand had 2 acres of retention in patches left within the stand.
