that historically causes the most damage to Kan-sas City lawns is the white grub. It is also the most diffi cult to control. This is because the grub attacks the grass from the base-ment. The white grub chews on grass roots un-derneath the thatch layer of the grass root system. This heavy thatch layer protects the grub from the insecticides that so easily control bugs that feed on the surface.Common grub control

products include Long Lasting Grub Control and Quick Killer for

Grubs. The most impor-tant thing to remember about grub control is that it must be watered heav-ily in with 1-2 inches of water in order to pene-trate the grasses natural thatch layer and reach the grub feeding in the basement. A two-step program is

best with one application of Long Lasting Grub Control in June or July and second application of Quick Killer for Grubs in late August or early September. Grubs cause expensive damage to Kansas City lawns ev-ery year. A summertime preventative program is money well spent.

Nutgrass is a com-mon problem in sum-mer lawns. Nutgrass has triangular stems with leaves that branch out in three different di-rections. Light green to yellow in color, nutgrass grows quickly in spring and summer, out grow-ing grass in just a couple of days after mowing.

Nutgrass plants re-generate from small nut-lets formed on their root system. Under the soil surface, these nutlets go unharmed by traditional contact weed controls, making nutgrass diffi cult to control. Avoid pulling the nutgrass plant by hand. Pulling will stress plants and stimulate even more nutlets to sprout.

Uncle’s Nut Buster is the most effective con-trol for nutgrass in the home lawn. Apply with Stikit, a surfactant, that helps hold the herbicide onto the waxy leaf of the nutgrass. Allow the herbicide to stay on the nutgrass leaf 48 hours before mowing or water-ing. Give the plant plenty of time to draw Uncle’s Nut Buster deep into the root system and nut-lets for best control.

Timing is everything, and early control is best. Nutgrass plants allowed to mature will stress when treated, stimulating more nutlets to sprout; However, be persistent and spray the new plants as they emerge, and you will be victorious.

As summer tempera-tures arrive with warm nights and higher hu-midity, patches, spots, eyes and slime show up quicker than a chicken on a June bug. Lawn disease time is just around the corner.

Hot, humid tempera-tures mean disease and fungus in your yard. Start early, lawn spots are a lot easier to pre-vent than control. By applying granular Fun-gus Fighter now, we can protect the lawn be-fore pathogens get into the plant and wreak hav-oc. Shaded areas are of particular concern. Restricted air move-ment and humid condi-tions can stimulate turf disease. Grass Pad’s Fungus Fighters allow a healthy lawn to outgrow many of the diseases that show up.

Bluegrass LawnsBluegrass diseases

show up in the form of a slime or dust that wipes off, or even a patch that seems to die overnight. Mow bluegrass shorter in the spring and be vigil of the areas under trees or on the north that seem to hold the heavy dew longer in the morning. Mow the lawn shorter while it is cool, and rain is plentiful. In June, raise the mowing

height and don’t let the lawn dry out too much before starting the sum-mer watering schedule. If fungus shows up ap-ply fast acting liquid fungicide and follow with granular Fungus Fighter one week later. If large areas die in the summer, add Stadium Special, sports peren-nial ryegrass, to your blend this fall and do what you can to help the soil.

Fescue LawnsFescue diseases can

be a little more predict-able than bluegrass. Expect fungus to show up as soon as the tem-perature and humidity added together reach 150, usually early in June. Applying granular Fungus Fighter every 21 days through mid-August should keep you ahead of the game. If fungus patches do ap-pear or every other blade of grass is brown, apply liquid Fungus Fighter, then granular one week later. Be sure and overseed every fall. Only use the newest varieties of fescue, like Heat Wave or Macho Mix, to ensure the most up to date disease resis-tant varieties.

One-Two PunchIf you are fi ghting fun-

gus patch now, give it a one-two punch. First, use fast acting liquid Fungus Fighter for immediate control fol-lowed by an applica-tion of granular Fungus Fighter for a more long lasting control. Get to the Grass Pad, see our grass doctors and get the right “anti-biotic” for your lawn.

Mother Nature designed her baby grass plants to tol-erate low light conditions. Grass seeds sprout in the shadow of established taller grasses where little is required to germinate. As grass plants mature, more sunlight is needed to main-tain health and vigor.

In full sun, grass blades reach to the sky and ab-sorb sunlight to thrive. In shade, the plant reacts in an attempt to fi nd quality light resulting in a longer, thinner and less vigorous grass plant. Weakened grass plants are less toler-ant of drought, heat, and disease. The lack of vigor will affect turf density al-lowing weeds to move into thin areas. While the area under large trees can be heavily shaded, with a little extra effort, it is rarely too shady to grow quality turf. These are fi ve tips to grow-ing grass in dense shade.

Overseeding shaded areas three times a year (spring, summer, and fall) rotates youthful, low light tolerant grass plants into maturing turf. Use Uncle’s Premium Shade Mix a formulated blend of peren-nial shade tolerant varieties

specifi c for Kansas City.

Condition the soil struc-ture under your shade trees to give your grass seed the best chance to survive. Core aerating and raking Primera Field Con-ditioner into the aeration holes will increase water-holding capacity and im-prove drainage

Altering traffi c path-ways of active dogs may require physical barriers. Shade stressed grass plants are less tolerant of heavy wear. A runway of mulch along the fence could be your best option for large active canines.

Quality of light is impor-tant. Intensity and duration of light reaching the grass plant are vital. Pruning lower branches to raise the canopy will increase sun exposure and allow more wind circulation. Areas with restricted air movement may require treatment with Fungus Fighters to main-tain quality turf.

Water deeply and in-frequently in heavy shade areas, especially during periods of drought. Trees are bullies, and large trees use hundreds of gallons of water a day. Reduce wet foliage and the chance of turf disease by using a tree root feeder to water trees in summer.
