Step 2- Rake or sweep the lawn to remove heavy clippings or other debris. Rough the surface of the soil giving special attention to bare spots. Step 3- Apply Golf Course Starter fertilizer at 6-8 lbs. per 1000 ft. or Renovator at 3-5 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. Step 4- Spread the seed with a rotary or a hand cranked “whirlwind” spreader. Special attention should be given to spots where the ground is bare. Extra seed should be applied by hand to these spots. Step 5- On bare spots apply a light mulch of sphagnum peat or PrimeraFC seed dressing. Topsoil & black peats contain weed seeds and should not be used. Step 6 -Water the seedbed lightly so the soil surface is moist. Continue watering lightly so the soil does not become hard or baked. Winter broadleaf weeds: henbit, chick- weed, clover, dandeli- ons, and an occasional thistle have sprouted in the lawn wherever there is a bare spot. Some have little flowers: pur- ple, yellow or white. No matter how cold, how much snow and ice, or how good your lawn looked last fall, it now looks like the salad bar at Price Chopper. These small winter broadleaf weeds can be controlled with the right weed control program. Broadleaf weeds are not controlled by PREVENT!. Traditional granular Weed & Feed will not work well until cold soil temperatures warm up in April. Likewise, small leaves of the immature weeds make them a dif- ficult target for granular applications. Best way to kill these little winter broadleaves is with SPEEDZONE, a cool weather liquid weed killer. Add Uncle’s Stikit, spreader stick- er, to help the spray stick to the small waxy leaves and use a stron- ger mixing formula in cool weather. Also, be patient. At cold soil tem- peratures, these plants die more slowly and you may need a second ap- plication after seven to ten days. Always follow directions on the label. Now is the time to stop the ugly summer weeds that plan to ambush your lawn as soon as summer soil temperatures heat up. Crabgrass, foxtail, gooseg- rass, barnyard grass and all the other ugly annual summer weed grasses lie dormant in the soil waiting to sprout and ruin your well tended Kansas City lawn. This nasty weed grass in- vasion takes place every year when lawn soil tem- peratures reach above 50°. These alien seeds will sprout sooner in bare spots that are open to the sun, usually in open areas on the west and south. The warm cracks around your driveway, patio and sidewalk will be crabgrass heaven. Depending on the year, this ugly grassy weed hatch usually takes place during mid-April. In lawns with well estab- lished turf, in the shade or on the north side of the house soil temperatures stay cooler. In these areas you may not see ugly weed grasses species until May. In any event it is not nice to procrastinate with Mother Nature. Once these ugly summer grasses sprout, they are hard to kill. Ben Franklin said it best: “Pre- vent Crabgrass Now” or you will really feel silly. The best way to control these ugly summer weed grasses is with two applica- tions of PREVENT! plus fer- tilizer, once now and again in eight weeks. The PRE- VENT! formula gives 98% control of crabgrass, fox- tail, goosegrass, barnyard grass and all other summer annual weed grasses. Your “Idiot Proof” summer lawn care program begins now with the PREVENT! formu- la. PREVENT! UGLY SUMMER WEEDS UGLY SUMMER WEEDS Landscape plants of all kinds: flowering shrubs, English garden hostas, bleeding hearts, lily of the valley, and dozens more start out their life in the nursery as bare root plant stock. These unattractive plants, roots and bulbs are then potted and grown until they become the attractive full grown plants that are sold in landscape nurseries and garden centers. Like the ugly duckling at birth, they are transformed into a white swan. Planting this nursery root- stock now can save fifty to eighty per-cent over ma- ture plants purchased later in May. Likewise, plant ma- terial purchased locally is larger and of higher grade than dried out catalogue starters purchased by mail or internet. If you find a picture you like in a mail or- der garden catalogue, take it to the Grass Pad. They probably have it and can tell you if it will do well in the Kansas City area. English garden hosta lil- ies are as close to “idiot proof” as a plant can get. These tufted leafy plants are grown for both their distinctive foliage and sea- sonal flowers. Their foliage will vary from deep green to bright yellow, as well as dozens of variegated com- binations in between. Their leaves may be large, small, radial or oval. Lily of the valley, bleeding hearts, and Astilbe all do well in mixed shade and start from root stock. Trop- ical caladium bulbs and elephant ears also prefer a sheltered spot and will grow quickly in warm moist soil. A rainbow of flowering plants: day lilies, gladiolas, and dahlias may be plant- ed now and will bloom this year. An “idiot proof” bare root planting kit includes Max Mix Grass Pad’s profes- sional landscape mix or sphagnum peat. These should be worked into the soil to six or eight inches. Follow this with Uncle’s Root Accelerator once at planting and again at thirty day intervals. At midsummer, potted nurs- ery plants will cost as much as twenty dollars. But right now bare root plants are easy to establish and rep- resent a real value. BARE ROOT GARDENING ON A BUDGET SPRING MAGIC RED BUDS • CRABAPPLES • MAGNOLIAS SPRING TREES ARRIVING DAILY!
